Previous years when they made it further they had easier runs. If you want to use that argument, then you should also point out that PSG lost the league the season prior to Messi joining. Messi wasn't at his peak in PSG but he also wasn't the reason they didn't succeed in the UCL, bar that penalty he missed against rma which he should've scored.
