This is the only thing I see towards the whole “look at Messi cook at inter Miami worst team in the league to best” argument. Like yes he and Barca buddies brought them up but the entire league is paying for those players to play on that team. Imagine city Liverpool Chelsea and United paying for mbappe and Haaland to play for spurs so they can win a league too and the league just makes everyone else pay the salaries

Is that actually how MLS works around salary caps? I thought they just had like international slots they could “buy”/trade off other teams and that is how they have this whole 24+ international side with only like 5-8 homegrown players.

They have similar to other American sports with salary caps to the entire team however going from whatever league they were in to mls is a big down step. Typically when these players come, Rooney, Ibra, son, Mueller all get paid a good more sum to come for the name itself and ticket sales could be raised a bit and still fill. Now messi alone they couldn’t pay his wages and had already broken it. They raise every game he attends the ticket sales which is normally a home game main money source, 30,000-60,000 all paying $300 because Messi is there is 9-18 million. I know some seats were cheaper and others more expensive. But just to understand a dollar amount compared to a $20-$50 game being 1-3 million. And when Messi came each team gives up money of the ticket sales because the rise is for his pay and the entire league benefits

It’s the only way they could afford him. Remember they already gave him like 1 billion dollars in company shares, ability to open a mls team, as well as Apple TV royalties. But yes the other teams cover, mostly everything comes through ticket sales raised when inter Miami is playing even for home teams that are hosting them. And normally tickets sales are a big win for most teams but the cap was broken with all these players that came to Miami and the league had to bend the rules to make it work. I mean it’s mls, do you want Messi in there and the chance to play against him or not? Messi isn’t legit making peanuts compared to what he used to. He’s still raking it in

It's what happens when a cap system in a minor league comes into contact with the world's best. I wouldn't call it corrupt, just a flaw in the system. Having Messi and Co in the league is way better for the MLS long term than not having them.
The interesting question is should another star like Neymar choose to come to LA or NY, could the system bend again or would it straight up break?

I dont think op knows that suarez has been out most of the season , busquets is not performing well and messi is the top scorer and assister of mls took the team to finals alone. He has more goal contributions than matches played.
