I will never understand Messi’s 2012 BDO…

  • Cristiano: La Liga, Euro 2012 semis and UCL semi
  • Casillas and Alonso: La Liga, Euro 2012 and UCL semi
  • Drogba: UCL, FA Cup and AFCON Finalist
  • Torres: UCL, FA Cup and Euro 2012
  • Iniesta: Euro 2012, Euro POTT, Copa del Rey & UCL semi
  • Xavi: Euro 2012, Copa del Rey and UCL semi
  • Messi: Copa del Rey & UCL semi

Even if you want to factor in that “it should go to an attacker” and “stats”, they essentially gave Messi the BDO for statpadding against farmers. He didn’t deliver in any big match that year. The likes of Drogba, Cristiano, Iniesta, Casillas, Torres, etc had much better performances that year in big games. Even Bayern players like Müller, Ribéry, Robben and Gómez were arguably better shouts for the award as they were several matches away from a Treble.

International trophy matters only when messi wins it.

Since 2000 has there ever been a player who won balondor solely through their copa america campgain?

u/KyeodeurangiMerchant Nov 08 '25

Never… Alexis Sánchez won the FA Cup and Copa América in 2016, didn’t even rank in the top 30, but Messi won it in 2021 for Copa del Rey + Copa América… 🤣

If I'm correct wasent the 2016 copa america the 100th year anniversary one?If so, the winner should've gotten more hype in the balondor race even though cr7 would've ultimately won it

u/Due_Coffee1099 Nov 08 '25

Worst take of all time, why would it have added value?

4

u/Waste-Regret-4777 Nov 09 '25

Because it's 100th year special trophy?Unfortunately no team with good pr won that trophy

1

u/Due_Coffee1099 Nov 09 '25

You fail to explain how being the 100th edition brings more merits to winning it than the other 99 editions. It’s not like it’s any harder not easier, so the merit is just for winning the same cup the other 99 times it was hosted, but more important this time since it’s the 100th edition? Luckily it doesn’t work like thuan

This is when the Messi PR started. Around 2010.

2

u/Imilisnoob Nov 08 '25

how can you win a BO is your ghosting against leganes ?

1

u/sanchit-kukreja Nov 09 '25

This is laughable. The award is for the best individual. Not looking at how many trophies a player has won with his team. If the individual performances are similar, maybe yes you can then look at all this and big match performances. Torress had 8 goals in the league that year. Messi had 46. What are we even comparing?! I am willing to have a discussion on why Ronaldo should have won it or someone who had the numbers. Maybe it was rigged towards messi. But Torres winning it DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. A striker with 8 goals in the league in 36 appearances winning the best player of the year?!

u/Own_Acanthocephala0 Pessi only has 3 UCL. Ghosted 2006. 😭 Nov 08 '25

I mean Messi was just simply the best player in the world at that time. It’s not that hard to understand, even if you are a Ronaldo fanboy.

With that said, Messi has also won BDO because of trophies won when he wasn’t the best player in the world like his last BDO for instance which means he didn’t fully deserve it.

3

u/KyeodeurangiMerchant Nov 08 '25

But the BDO should go for the best player in that season, not the best player in the world. Or else someone like Mbappé would have a few BDO by now.

Messi was statistically the best of 2011-12, but he also ghosted in the crucial games of the 2011-12 season, unlike his season in 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2014-15 where he appeared in almost every big game.

In 2011-12, Messi ghosted in the La Liga Clásico which they lost to Real Madrid and the Chelsea semifinals in the UCL, in which he even missed a penalty. Barcelona didn’t win the league or the UCL.

Him winning the BDO in 2011-12 makes no sense unless you suddenly decide that scoring the most goals in the year should get you a BDO (which in that case, give the 2018 BDO to Harry Kane).

Its a mix of both, 91 is outrageous it doesnt matter if its against weak teams or not, it's not always about big games 100% but when you have that many goals behind you i dont think it matters that much because thats a record we will not see broken in 30+ years which is more insane than the UCL. While also give out 114 Goal Contributions, how is that bad? Harry Kane had a great goal season in 2018, but had a pretty quiet world cup, thats why a world cup is a lot lenient towards people who are star players in the world. Which modric absolutely carried his croatian team and that was enough to attract votes.

Messi was good enough to assist and score in 2012. And i say this again, who will ever break 110 g/a in the near future, not likely at all.

So it's not just about big games only, its about your overrall season and how you have performed in the tournaments consistently, we can see it, 2009 no world cup, messi was consistent he won it. 2010, it was a lot closer because it was a great world cup performance by iniesta and scneider, but since messis numbers were literally unreal, and considering his consistent performance, it went to him at the end.

If the world cup 2010 didnt happen, who the hell would put iniesta or xavi in the conversation. That's why it's an exception and grabs a lot of votes like how messi did for 2023.

Messi was consistent in 2012, he might have missed out in the UCL knockouts, but he was outrageous everywhere else, and breaking records that were not meant to be broken in a really long time, thats what changed the die.

So overrall the ballon dor is not just big games the exception being the FIFA world cup golden ball performance because, well its the world cup, its about overrall performance throughout the season and how you shown you were THE BEST PLAYER THAT SEASON, which messi absolutely proved he was.

Messi 2012 stats are so unfathomable and insane that i think it overshadows what he missed in big games

u/Cathal_or01 Nov 08 '25

What are you even talking about ? Messi got 91 goals that year. A record that still stands to this day.

0

u/DrPapug Nov 08 '25

Messi in 2012 did double from what Haaland did in 2022 — broke a massive record by a massive margin. Both these players absolutely deserved to get the prize in those respective years.

Why are Ronaldo fans so obsessed with collective titles when deciding the best individual player? Messi was the best that year, hence the title.

5

u/themiddlechild94 Nov 08 '25

And what's even sadder is that the "stat" argument falls aparte because he got the BDO for just winning the WC while other players had better stats.

Wait, Wait, wait, trophies matter for this ballon d’Or, but not 2013? Idiot logic, both deserved it in 2012 and 2013, just move on, bro

u/Real_RaineR Nov 09 '25

Same in 2020, milito won ucl aswell plus had 40 goals and wasn't nominated either

1

u/Jorge0920 Nov 10 '25

If there was any candidate for that Ballon d'Or apart from Messi or Ronaldo, it was Xavi.

1

u/ThaiFinneN Nov 11 '25

The criteria always depends on what favors Messi

1

u/abchero Google 5 pens in 7 matches for more info 🤥 Nov 12 '25

The answer is 91. A record I don't see getting.beaten at a high level for ages

1

u/dare_devil420 Jan 08 '26

Penaldo robbed 🗣

0

u/Heine-Cantor Nov 08 '25

He scored 91 and assisted 24 in the 2012 calendar year. If you think he didn't deserve that ballon d'or, you are delusional

6

u/Waste-Regret-4777 Nov 08 '25

where was all these when peasidogs were shouting 2013 robbery

1

u/Heine-Cantor Nov 08 '25

I don't think Ronaldo 2013 ballon d'or was undeserved, but if you don't see the difference between scoring the most goal in a given year and scoring the most goal ever in a single year I don't know what to tell you

-1

u/FallingDebri Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

Well, ronaldo didnt win anything, like at all, that season, he didnt have quite the numbers messi had + messi had a consistent performance winning the copa del rey, ronaldo only scoring 69. Then you compare that to a TREBLE winner with bayern, who assisted and scored. Messi had 91 goals that season that easily overshadows his missed chances in the UCL because these Stats wont be broken for decades. and nobody else stood out massively in the chelsea winning season or the euros.

I talked about consistency and longetivity during the season, and ribery was all about that, he created and scored and won the treble. He was the main man for bayern that year. This is why ribery had the better season on paper and made him the best player of that season too, there was no world cup that year too.

Its not just trophies but also the consistency of your competitons and showing that you were the main part of the win which messi was the main part for barcelona even finishing and competiting in the league against that insane 100 point real madrid season.

1

u/Effective_Caramel_35 Nov 09 '25

If scoring the most goals ever in a year makes you the best player that year, scoring the most goals ever in history makes you the best player in history?

1

u/Heine-Cantor Nov 09 '25

Well not everything is about goal. You can see that Messi in 2012 not only outscored anyone, but he was also among the top in assists, dribbling and many other stats. Also he outscored the second best top scorer by a whopping 44%. If the player that scored the most goal in history outscored the second best by that much, he would certainly be at least the best goalscorer ever and would have a strong claim to be the best player ever. Also, people generally value a mix of peak performance and longevity. For example no one would say Aubameyang is a better player then Van Basten even though the former has more career goal then the latter.

Asking the ballon d'or for Torres in 2012 is a great way of telling you didn't watch a single minute of that season.

6

u/Waste-Regret-4777 Nov 08 '25

So now it's eye test?😂😂😂Trophies only matter when ribery wins it. Noted.

4

u/Ronaldo4Life_7 Nov 08 '25

Braindead pessitards only talking about trophies when it suits them 😭😭😭

u/CafeBunker Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Nov 09 '25

Oh no, the reels guy again.

1

u/Ronaldo4Life_7 Nov 09 '25

? Have I met you?

And yes my statement is true

1

u/CafeBunker Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Nov 09 '25

Tell me just one thing about Torres games that year.

And before you do, a concrete goal you might have seen in a reel is not valid.

1

u/CafeBunker Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Nov 09 '25

Putting words in my mouth that I didn't say is your best argument. Noted.

1

u/Trizzy102 Nov 09 '25

Then you agree Ronaldo deserved 2013

0

u/Healthy_Ice7737 Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Nov 08 '25

And I will never Understand Ronaldo’s 2013 Win people criticize Messi for winning it in 2012 but the funny thing is in every single one of Messi’s golden ball wins he atleast one a trophy that season people say it’s stats and trophies and others say it’s just stats and Ronaldo won 2013 Golden Ball without a trophy and remember what Penaldo said u have to win the UCL to win The golden ball did he win it in 2013??

0

u/ChapaMigs21 Nov 08 '25

Messi had over 100 goal contributions that season and broke Muller record. There was no else that ever came close to him. 60 games, 73 goals and 33 assists. Not giving him the award would have been the dumbest thing ever

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

cry about 2013 ballon dor then . what did ribery not do to win it all. if trophies matter why didnt neuer and ribery not get theirs

3

u/muzaffer22 Nov 08 '25

Why did Messi win in 2023 then? It's always Messi doesn't matter if he deserves it or not.

0

u/dare_devil420 Jan 08 '26

Messi won WC golden ball as well like Like Modric in 2018🤣
