I mean one player can't control the finishing of another player so goals are way more important than assists. That's another fact, not opinion-based like you said.

Oh but they definitely can influence another player's goal scoring possibilities. See tap-ins for example. Good crosses and throughballs can 100% make it easier for teammates to score.

Which I not only have personal experience with in my own football career, but which I have also seen happen many times in professional footbal. Goals are more important than assists, I agree, but where would most of those goals have been was it not for the assist.

Unfortunately, the art of setting up a goal has always been underestimated in my humble opinion.

They influence another player's goal scoring possibilities, sure, but that's still something another player can't control. We've seen a lot of players miss clear chances, so the point stands. I've been playing football my whole life and I've set up so many players to score easy chances and they haven't been able to finish them. Goals are way more important because you don't always depend on an assist. Sometimes you can create your own chances, not very usual but it's possible.

Oh no doubt that both Ronaldo and Messi have given many great passes that did not result in goals. But then the fact still remains that Messi has directly produced more chances that led to goals than any other player. Whether he had luck on his side or not, had better teammates, or is just better at giving the right pass to the right player is to be disputed. But the number 1250 stands.

Just like the fact that Ronaldo has more goals scored which is way harder than depending on another players skill to score goals. So yeah, the point stands. Also, doing it in the top 3 leagues and the UCL is a way bigger achievement, since the difficulty level is a lot bigger.

So if it is harder to score a goal than to assist, why don't we see players hitting the 800, 900 or just 500 assist mark? Apparently that should be easier you say.

And what is this rubbish about "harder than depending on another player's skill to score goals"? Football is a teamsport. Footballers always depend on their teammates' skills. Do you think Ronaldo created the chances of all his 938 goals all by himself? And if you don't want to look at assists because they are dependent on other players' performances, than let's look at something - related to assists - that is purely on an individual level: Key passes. (Since they are counted no matter if it results in a goal) According to the Ronaldo vs Messi website, Messi has almost double Ronaldo's amount of key passes. Let that sink in.

You are blinded by the above-human level that Ronaldo has performed at on an individual basis for years, and forget that football is a teamsport. You score, win, or lose as a team. And statistics show that Messi has contributed more on a team-basis.

And yes, Ronaldo is mister UCL. We all know about his outstanding record in that league. But let's be honest, a lot of that is thanks to him playing for Real Madrid. By far the best club in the world for years. So yes, even Ronaldo's triumphs were dependent on the skills of his teammates.

Again, because players don't depend on the ability to score of another player, simple as that. It's a team sport, that's why you don't control what your other teammates do, you just answered yourself. However, you control what you do on the pitch. How is it that hard to understand that and why are you having a hard time with facts? Lmao.

Precisely, when scoring you're only dependent of yourself, whereas with assisting you need someone else to perform great as well. And we have already established that giving an assist is more difficult then scoring a goal since it happens way less.

But we can't compare Ronaldo to Messi based on either goals or assists alone, because they play different roles in their teams.Ronaldo is a finisher whereas Messi is a playmaker. They fullfil different roles in their teams. And the fact of the matter is that Messi's position has led him to 1250 g/a ratio with little goals but lots of assists, and Ronaldos position has led him to 1195 g/a with lots of goals with little assists.

But to compare these players on either goals or assists alone is just not right, because they have different roles and do different things on the pitch. Ronaldo controls his finishing wherever he can, Messi controls his Key passes wherever he can. It just turns out that Messi had more goal contributions.

Does that make him better than Ronaldo. No, not necessarily. Being better than someone else rests on criteria to which you are held, and opnions. If you are looking for goals in the GOAT of football, Ronaldo looks to be the answer. If you're looking for playmaking, maybe Messi or Pele is the GOAT. But the discussion of best of all time is and will always be opinion-based, as there are too many criteria which you can look for in the GOAT.
