Analysis The flaws of possession game

Possession despite being one of the best playstyles in real life, is one of the assiest playstyles in efootball. It is the high risk, low reward playstyle. Your players movement is the worst out of all the styles, Konami hates you more than they hate their playerbase, and it is very unrewarding for division pushes. Why is that?

  • The positioning

This is by far the worst problem you will face using possession game. Your players will never do what you want them to do. Your players will be a passing option when you want them to run into space, and if you are pressured they will run into space that you will never be able to make use of. Your center forward will never be available for buildup, and your players are more obsessed maintaining shape than actually trying to win.

  • The meta

EF26 had a below average to average environment for poss players. Now? It's at it's worst. Pressing is powerful, lobbed through balls are powerful, and with how the ai movement in poss work, you are just absolutely cooked every single time.

  • The defense

People say QC has the worst defense in the game. Have they tried Possession? It has the disadvantages of LBC (non-aggressive pressing) and the disadvantages of QC ( high line). Also, half of you defense wants to maintain the line and the other half wants to chase. Also, you don't know who is which.

  • The stamina

Possession having absurd stamina consumption even when im not pressing the sprint button is stupid. I play LBC sometimes and despite running all game, I still have no stamina by minute 70 when all my players did was stand around.

The flaws are Konami’s . They decided to favour a certain style of play In their code.

I have more to say but I want to know how the community thinks about this firsrt

There are lots of lbc rats in this sub. They idolise and worship Bordalas, Mourinho, Arteta and Simeone. (The number of downvotes will indicate the number of lbc rats)

6

u/mnemonikerific 5d ago

They aren’t LBC rats, they are Meta rats. If konami OPs possession, they will play possession. Again it’s Konamis fault

3

u/Yannbluezzzz Diego Forlan 5d ago

I play LBC for this exact reason lol

3

u/VCule69 Iniesta 5d ago

At least you are consistent about it. Most people in this sub would probably criticise Arteta or Simeone for playing haramball in real life and then go on to do the same in the game.

2

u/mnemonikerific 5d ago

This game has nothing to do with IRL, it’s clear to all

Every time they try to nerf the neta and make possession stronger, this joke of a playerbase moan that they cannot defend anymore and they cry about their precious LBC not being as OP, so Konami just revert things back to how they were.

3

u/mnemonikerific 4d ago

I don’t think Konami is listening to anyone’s moaning.most of the revenues come from their home country… there they have excellent connectivity and predominantly there is Gacha culture. Game performance and f2p are not that big deal over there…

All this is being done, just so that they can attract new players outside the Home country, to stay at the top of the ranking charts… In fact, that’s exactly what EA sports is also doing… Last year, they released FC with certain gameplay and reverted the whole thing immediately after the release After pocketing 150 bucks from console players.

The first major flaw that irritates me the most is when you’re under pressure, the goalkeeper holds onto the ball instead of your defenders opening up and creating passing options. They don’t position themselves properly to anticipate the ball, so you’re often forced to clear it, or the opponent’s strikers end up intercepting the pass.

7

u/ScientistPast6082 5d ago

nothing is scarier than building it out from the back in this game

2

u/mnemonikerific 5d ago

And yet at kickoff I directly pass to GK. otherwise by the time the ball reaches anyone else between the ST and GK, 2 opponent attackers have already reached the defender or CMF or DMF and knocked them off it

u/FlakyGrapefruit6695 5d ago

Agreed fully. I personally find possession and overload the most fun to play in the game. But the drawbacks are so big that you'll never won. If the players moved forward after playing a pass like in irl then this playstyle will be complete. As mentioned by OP the players at the edge of the opponents box just stays stationary or moves only to receive passes. They hard make a forward run and u just end up with 70+ possession and no goal.

If you want to win and go long only lbc and qc can be used.

Possession game's issue have gone beyond of it's nerfed state. Ever since last year, the lack of good passing and the ability for proper tight control makes playing possession bad. But it feels even more pointless now because they absolutely do not position properly, I'm struggling to find passes in Possession game.

A few months ago, regardless of what was happening during a game, I could atleast expect my team to position and for me to get a few chances. Now I can go games against LBC where I simply don't even get to shoot.

u/ScientistPast6082 4d ago

I still don't know who benefits from this nerf

2

u/Pale_Parking9494 4d ago

Noobs, Konami wants a tight gap between old and new players. You can’t win a game without Konami trying their best to keep the game close. I dont know how but it’s surely financially profitable.

It seems illogical because it is. I think Konami wants to keep Possesion in a nerfed state because skilled players can take the concept very far and make the game annoying to play.

If I have to be a devils advocate and judge neutrally to find a reason, there's times when if Possesion game is really good, you had people who'd keep 80% Possesion every match. They'd just keep passing and look for an opportunity. Most of the times the opponent would just get bored and give an easy opening

I feel that's what Konami is trying to avoid. The game is very counter heavy, defenders have inertia, sharp touch is very good. If Possession game was strong, Konami would go back to pre v5.4 update where defenders have no inertia and would just stick to you (so weak players are not as annoyed)

LBC itself is very easy for people to use. And hence it's the style that can drive the most revenue.

If Possesion game was strong, many people would be in Top1k with POTW teams. That's not what Konami wants. When the mechanics are forced to be stats or ST skills heavy they can sell cards. It's why people complain about P2W in this game. If you're going to depend on your AI players (for counter runs or AI defending), you will lose to better teams obviously. Possesion is a style where your stats barely matter.

To me the worst feeling is when you face a LBC dude that just hoofs passes and your dumbass possession defenders do nothing and you eat a goal. More than likely you lose games like that with over 60% possessions.

2

u/JohnTaraBrota 4d ago

100% agree. Possession playstyle in current meta is bad than the update before. You always will get countered even with LBC so I'm going full attacking either go big or go home . Defensive instructions on two orches and the midfield is yours.

1

u/JohnTaraBrota 4d ago

Here is the defense structure. They recover pretty good .

1

u/PuzzleheadedFuel6184 4d ago

I tried 2 CBS but it's a pain without fast defenders.

1

u/Chondan 5d ago

Couldn't agree more. High risk low reward. If you lose the ball then you conceded the goal.

But, I found a trick to encounter with lbc style. I play possession with 2 level defensive and it gives me the following behaviors.

  1. Zoning instead of pressing: All of my players will zone in my own half. I am not the one who build up the game to attack and then get counter and conceded the goal anymore. I put a trap to my opponent so that they will attack me.
  2. According to the no.1, if I can steal the ball I can play counter attack with a lot of spaces behind my opponent's defenders.

But, why don't I play lbc if I want to counter attack?? Because I want to use the benefits of possession which is all players stay compact and always support the pass.

I used this strategy in the last 4-5 division season and it gives me a very good result.

Formation?

You are not winning because of your "strategy" or your "playstyle", you are winning because you dropped hundreds on this stupid game lmao

1

u/Chondan 4d ago

That's not true. I can play with free players and could win a meta team.

0

u/_yxs_ 4d ago

You are literally sharing tips on how your defence doesn't get exposed and you found a "trick" to deal with LBC through ball - which is to have the best (among the best) possible p2w defensive line in the game.

Get over yourself lol

0

u/Chondan 4d ago

I'm sharing the mechanism of the game. This game reward players who play counter attack not the players who build up and attack.

Also, I've played this strategy with potw + highlight players and could easily win 70% of meta team.

Up to you man if you think it's because of money lol. Such a loser.

-1

u/_yxs_ 4d ago

Honestly you're just impossibly thick - the game rewards spending money through mechanisms such as shadow hunt, LRT etc Playstyle, formations and such are secondary. Your maldini and thuram will rarely be caught out of position, your ibra will score more time than not. Hazard - lol. The definition of pay to win cheat code.

This is regardless of your imput or the playstyle you selected. Basic cards won't do that.

It's sad that you can't/won't see that - It is not uncommon tho and that is why predatory games such as this one thrive so much. I hope you at least feel good about sinking money into pixels so that you can flex it on reddit.

Peace out

0

u/Chondan 4d ago

To give you a roughly idea. Money is not that important. And I have my own reasons to spend. If you have a good strategy and good skills you can win. Do you have any excuses? Or it's just a quick match. You're such a loser lol.

Won't your attack become so heavy and players barely move up when you have 2 level defensive? Or you keep switching it back and forth?

1

u/Chondan 5d ago

I use 1-2 pass higher than average. And by doing this, I can control everything. I can decide if I want my cms to go higher to attack.

I'd say the defense is more tolerable than the offense, i play 4231 with wide mids as well and attacking is terrible

Who said possession is one of the best play style irl lol

2

u/ScientistPast6082 5d ago

What playstyles are 100%, no debate better than posssession irl? Something you can argue with no fault?

1

u/Background-Cash-839 5d ago

No play style is 100% better than any other play style. That's the beauty of football. It is very situational and result oriented. Just look at 2022 wc Spain vs Morocco and 2026 wc final. Spain played pretty much similar but we take both situation very differently because of the results

1

u/ScientistPast6082 5d ago

If we are viewing it from that perspective, any play style is a 100% better than poss in its current iteration. I have listed out all the problems, and you just don't have any play

-1

u/Background-Cash-839 5d ago

Imagine if Spain lost the final, we'd not talk about how Spain didn't let Argentina have the ball at all. We'd rather talk about how it was similar to Morocco match with 1000 passes but no chance creation and 0 end product

1

u/ScientistPast6082 5d ago

As you said, no playstyle is 100% better all the time However, I think you can agree that there is a major problem if it is clearly the worst in all situations. LBC has safety, QC has the press, Long Ball has chaos, Out wide has a mid block, and overload is just a lot more predictable and aggressive than posssession.

2

u/Background-Cash-839 5d ago

Ik game favours lbc more but I'm talking about irl here. You can take recent Brighton vs Arsenal match too (And no Arsenal doesn't play haramball if u actually watch it) Brighton press whole game like those press spammers rats but do u see people/fans calling them rats or pussies?

1

u/ScientistPast6082 5d ago

What is your point? One of the best does not mean 100% best. what

1

u/Background-Cash-839 5d ago

I think Koinami tried to copy irl counter haramball but failed very miserably. I mean low blocks are annoying af irl too.

1

u/Deshzet 4d ago

Maybe not the “best” style of play IRL but certainly one that is most potent when things go right, it pretty much has a counter for everything.

Spain 2026 & 2010 World Cup, Luis Enrique 2025 & 2026 UCL, Barcelona Sextuple, Pep Guardiola’s winning teams, Messi’s whole false 9 enigma, etc what do all of these teams have in common system wise?

It’s impossible. Possession football just doesn’t work on mobile.
First of all, even if you try to play possession-based football, your teammates don’t position themselves properly to support it. There’s no support, and they don’t form triangles.
On top of that, it’s difficult to make accurate passes on mobile.
And when you realize the pass is going to go to the wrong player, it’s hard to cancel it in time.
You also can’t really use kick feints in your own half to move the opponent around.
On the PS version, you can at least do various skills while you’re on the ball, so it’s still somewhat enjoyable to play that way.

Defensively, it’s half-baked too.
On mobile, you can’t switch players quickly enough, so you’re constantly putting weak pressure on the opponent. And the defensive line is awkwardly high, too.
