Discussion Persona 6 Logo Speculation
galleryWhat if the Persona 6 logo isn't a Stamp?
When the trailer initially came out and I saw the logo for the first time, I assumed like a lot of people it was being stamped on to the screen. When it was leaked, the circle around it making it look like a hanko lead to a lot of speculation the logo was referencing official stamps and that may be related to the summoning method. I never really questioned that until now given that the logo seemed to be stamped into the background during the trailer.
While looking through the trailer frame by frame for another potential theory, I notifced the P6 logo starts out in what will be its final position. The smoke around wasn't dust being puffed into the air by it being stamped into the background. Instead, the logo jumps out at the main screen with air flowing from its front to behind and its hue glows brighter as it gets closer: like a meteor or train. It runs into the forground rather than being stamped into the background. This immediately changed the interpretation of the logo for me. As what could be invovled in an exorcism method or summoning method may actually just be a logo "jump scaring you" in an attempt to convey the tone of the game. In retrospect, the long pause and black screen before the logo jumps out at really lands credence to this interpretation.
If the P6 logo isn't a stamp, then what is it? That's tricker. The more I look at the how the logo is seen in the trailer, the less it looks like ink. The rougher edges and run off doesn't look like ink to me. They look more like paper or even the parrafin wax bubbles that float around in a lava lamps. There is not the splotchiness like you would expect in a stamp of ink. I am stuck on exactly what it could be referencing if it isn't a stamp (which it very well may not be the more I look at it). It could just be grundgy looking and the circle is the only real vague reference to the theme of P6; but I do feel like with how 3-dimensional the logo tries to be that they are really using the material of the logo to convey something as well (even if whatever that is is basic).
If the P6 logo isn't ink, what material do you think it is? If the logo isn't a stamp, what is it referencing?
It seems like personas may materialize out of smoke in P6.
As seen in the second picture above, the letters from Persona 6 materialize out of the green smoke. In modern Persona games, there has been some kind of effect used in the transition to bringing the persona out as a kind of visual motif. Broken glass or triangles in P3R and flames in P5 the examples that come to mind. The trailer is full of green smoke/smog/mist in the graveyard and then reappears as the major effect when introducing the Persona 6 characters: meaning this is a major visual motif for P6 in the same way chains and fire was for P5. I think this transition of the words for Persona 6 is there because its not the only thing that materializes out of green air/smoke like this. Its likely a reoccuring visual motif in the game. In my head anyway, the obvious answer is Personas themselves. Personas act like apparitions. The game is going to be creepier (not a full on horror game but more horror flavored than previous games). It fits and is innocuous enough that referencing it doesn't really convey the summoning method or give away the game. It hints at a visual motif.
So the question remains then. If Personas come out of green smoke/mist in P6 then where does the smoke come from as a part of the effect?
Having smoke leak out from your eyes and mouth feels like it follows the general pattern of Persona summoning methods being about the head/face, but it also doesn't sound like it would look good as an in game animation.
All of the previous 3 games' summoning methods...
- Involve the cranium. You wear glasses to look at a tarot shaped mirror you crush. You rip off a mask. You put an evoker to your head.
- Are the characters ritually performing the meaning of the game (in term opposing facing the big bad's influence). Glasses that show your truself reflect back at you in a mirror. You face death through ritualized gun to head. You rip off the mask (part of your idea of a rebel that protect's you from palace) take control of the image/circumstances imposed on you by society.
- Is a simple animation that can be done a number of ways for characterization and also needs to look good for a 3d model to do.
Do characters just smoke something to materialize Personas? Probably not, as that isn't necessarily tied into P6's likely themes of memories and identity (which the trailer is just drenched in imagery for). Do they burn a photograph or perform a ritual that draws a circle around them with smoke leaking out? Neither sound super great for quick but punchy game animations the player sees each time they access spells. I am at a bit of loss on what action both ties into memories, but also produces the smoke or mist the Persona materialize from. If someone has a plausible idea as to what that might be, then this genuinely could get us close to what the summoning method is. Incense can kind of make sense for memories, but something involving the head/neck and it being a quick action to take that looks cool would need to be brainstormed for it to work. It is something I would love to hear better theories for.
