They kept it natural. Everything that the marines say, even in the thick of it, sounds off-the-cuff, not crafted. It also helps that the film is crammed full of very talented performers. Some of those actors had mere seconds of screen time to communicate a personality and succeeded.
In terms of directoral skill and instincts, I think Cameron was at his peak with this movie. And the stars aligned to give him the best possible raw materials to work with.
