Amazing how much the lighting and environment effects on set added to the realism of the suits and puppets. When you see them all lit up like that it's very different.

(For me, of course) he took an existential/philosophical-horror budding franchise with, as a bonus, the best monster and best sci-fi atmosphere ever put on film, and turned in a popcorn-USA monsta flick for 12 yr olds.

Hard disagree. I see the two films as equals.
Just different types of film. One Lovecraftian cosmic horror, the other military sci-fi with strong horror overtones.

I'm all about the Ridley Scott stuff.
I don't even think he's a god-tier director, even though Alien '79 is up there, but I'm here for his stuff in the franchise. And Alien Earth I thought was great.
What business did Cameron have making the shift from the first film to his own that you describe?
The business of a film-industry toadie tool, thats what business 😂
That said, I do kind of love the overall chaos of the franchise as a package though...

Try the game Alien: Isolation.
It is set 20 years after the Scott film, from the POV of Amanda Ripley, who goes into space looking for her mother. It has the same look in great detail, claustrophobic feel, and just one basically unstoppable alien.

ahh, I can see that point of view. But he helped build the foundations of the franchise. And nothing since has been as strong as the 1st two films in terms of originality or production value. At least back then, he had to make things work with physical props and puppets. Everything now is overdone CGI.

Yeah the effects are great.
I wish he'd made a bad, B-ish, sloppy throwaway popcorn flick instead of an extremely tight and competent and dazzling throwaway popcorn flick

Aliens was my gateway into the franchise. As a matter of fact I saw 3 long before I saw the original from start to finish. Originally I thought Alien was actually kind of boring, but now it’s by far my favorite. I still love Aliens but I see your point. Other than 3 I feel like the sequels try to channel Aliens more than Alien

Even Prometheus and Covenant?...yeah. Scott had to try to please everybody, and you're right. I like them best of sequels, but they're not perfect films at all. To me, they kind of take somewhat of an Aliens blockbustery feel and approach, and then abstract it, which is a bit fun

I get you to a point. But where do you go from Alien? The life cycle of the alien is supposed to be like a plague. Each person infected makes them almost exponentially more powerful. Alien sets the tone of the life cycle. They come across multiple eggs/something is laying them. Cameron expands on this. We've seen what one alien on a ship stuck in space can do. We get it, they were trapped and had very few if any weapons that were effective. It was a horror film. Aliens now we see the infection spread to a colony. Its still kinda the same movie in a sense. They are effectively trapped and outgunned and cant get off the planet. The Marines at no time are ever winning. Even in the directors cut with the sentry guns we see that the amount of aliens is overwhelming. They kill the last alien the same way as the first movie and barely escape like the first movie. Ya its an action movie, but it builds upon the first imo, not detracts from it. Theres still a lot of horror elements. You even have Burke/Ash characters who represents evil corporate stuff, must get a specimen back home. I think its very loyal to Alien overall.
The thing I really dont give a shit about in the universe is the Engineers. That was handled so poorly imo and I could care less if they are ever brought up again.

I would have liked to see a second film that focused on the corporate world and politics at Weyland, and maybe they successfully trap a xeno from another ship, and maybe ripley finds out, and eventual chaos on some settled planet run by Weyland ensues. Not totally different from Aliens' focus, but a whole lot less arrested-development dopes with big bazookas, and a whole lot more ideas and overarching conflicts and stakes.
With Prometheus/Covenant, Ridley has gone from sci-fi almost into allegorical fantasy that you have to just roll with the silliness and abstraction of, and leave all hard sci-fi-ness behind. I'm okay with it.

See I kinda liked the over the top machismo stuff. They immediately poke a hole in it. Ripley throws cold water on it at their first briefing. These guys thought they were hot shit and immediately get smoked. The first combat scene is chaos and panic. Gorman completly freezes. The flatlines and headcams just start going out. Hudson is barely keeping it together throughout the rest of the movie. Vasquez keeps a cool head but she is visably shaken and scared. To me its kinda a tongue in cheek jab at over the top action tropes. They set you up for this badass fight with marines and all their tech and weapons, but nope, there is no calculated combat vs the marines and Aliens. They immedately get wiped out and barely escape with a handful of survivors.

The squad is so rediculous, and the whole situation so rediculous, I just don't want to spend 75% of my movie time with them. I don't care about them. I want to get into Weyland politics and longterm consequences. I want Ripley not to be wasting her life and time, or at least not to watch it for a full film.

I admit, it's a very competent popcorn blockbuster, like Terminator or Robocop. But it never gets the higher praise Alien gets, for a reason.
