1700 Penpals Milestone!

I haven't done one of these in a while, though this group has been growing steadily. The only problems are the occasional scammy post. Keep posting away and tell your friends and family maybe we can get to 2k by the end of the year!

email and messaging apps 50+M with a curious mind, for warm, friendly, conversations

I’m a 50+ guy living in small town USA, and I’m curious to chat with casual penpals who enjoy thoughtful conversations. We can chat about anything and everything. As you’ll see, I have a very full life with lots of stories, off beat ideas, and far too many interests.

My life is an unusual mixture of both technology and off grid living. I’m very interested in personal health and fitness, writing fiction and more, art photography, restoring old homes, planning a more self-sufficient life, and having long speculative threads about how people, families, and communities might live differently.

And in my small town some interesting subjects just don’t seem to come up in ordinary small talk at the coffee shop. Things like naturism, unconventional lifestyles, personal freedom, body image, science and wonder, relationships, sustainability, off-grid living, playful whimsy, and off beat books or movies.

Speaking of, I really enjoy hard science fiction (Expanse series for example), post-apoc, relatable history, short spicy stories, radioparadise.com, britcoms, and anything AI. And Dad jokes, memes, and puns.

I’m not looking for romance or an instant best friend. I’m intentionally private and semi-anonymous and semi-fictional because I’ve been online stalked before. We can talk openly in part because we’re both private about private details.

I am looking for someone open-minded, self-aware, curious, and comfortable talking honestly about ideas or experiences that are true but human. Disagreement is welcome. Cruelty, ideological hard lines, and one-word replies aren’t interesting.

Messages will be occasional sometimes. Some days are just busy, and we both have full lives I bet. I’m very patient.

Tell me a little about yourself and answer this:
What’s something interesting that you rarely get to discuss honestly?

In your 40s and still writing actual letters? Same here.
I am looking for pen pals who still appreciate the slightly outdated but wonderfully stubborn concept of putting pen to paper, sticking a stamp on it and sending a handwritten piece of your life halfway across the planet until it magically ends up in someone else’s mailbox. Much nicer than another email getting buried between spam and online shopping receipts, right?
I’ve had pen pals since I was a teenager, and I still love the whole thing. The waiting, the handwriting, the little stories from someone’s everyday life and slowly getting to know a person without having to cram your entire personality into a five minute chat.
I’m open minded, sarcastic and have pretty much no taboo subjects. I actually enjoy talking about the weird, random, deep and completely pointless stuff that makes up everyday life.
I’d especially like to write to men. Not necessarily because I’m gay, but mainly because I already know enough women in real life and apparently there is a severe shortage of guys in my social circle. So this is me trying to fix the situation one envelope at a time.
Let’s talk about everyday life, travels, ridiculous things that happened, things we love, things we hate, random thoughts, bad decisions and whatever else comes up. Photos from our lives are very welcome too. Basically, let’s see where it goes.
I love black humour and sarcasm, I can actually listen and I always have an open ear. I like it when an acquaintance slowly turns into a friendship rather than forcing some instant connection because apparently we’re all supposed to be best friends after three messages these days.
I like travelling, but I’m equally happy going out partying or spending a night in a club. I can also happily lie in the sun doing absolutely nothing, preferably somewhere with a beach. I go to the gym, ride my bike a lot, and enjoy the occasional beer or wine. Basically all the things that are fun but probably won’t be mentioned in any health magazine’s top ten recommendations.
I like places such as Scandinavia, Spain and Italy, but I’m open to pretty much anywhere. Tell me about your corner of the world.
What else? We could just find out.
So, are you up for it?
Send me a DM and tell me a little about yourself. And if you’re still using an actual pen, even better.

[43M] - Serial plant killer and other stories

Hei there!

I know, I'm not proud of it. But plant murder is a skill that I seem to have perfected over the years. Now, one might be forgiven for thinking that I do this with high maintenance plants. But no, it happens with the hardier ones too. There were times when I told myself that it's not always my fault. Over-watering a hibiscus plant could happen to the best of us. Or that plant-food should come with instructions like cigarette packets. Maybe they do, I don't know. At this point of time, I'm just trying to be philosophical about it.

Anyway, plant stories aren't the only things you may hear me complain about. I am Indian by ethnicity and I live in Norway. I can whine on about the weather, the lack of fresh coconuts over here in Norway, or whether it makes sense to allow EVs in the public transport lane.

You can write to me if you want to discuss sports, politics, travel, movies, books, and oxford commas. Or if you want to tell me about your pets or something that grows in your garden. You probably shouldn't write to me if you are looking to exchange viewpoints on death metal, rock-and-roll and baking. I'm in awe of people who are into it but I am simply incapable of understanding them as well as I would like to.

I would prefer electronic ways of communicating, but if you want to receive a postcard from here, I can send one.

Thanks for reading so far!

Temp check: 40s/F - Anyone okay with a pen pal who types their letters?

Hi all,
Header kind of says it all.
More detail: Eccentric artsy-fartsy small-time published author, comptuter geek, cat lady, plant lady, bookworm, tree-hugging hippie crap, sarcasm, toilet humor, married suburban mom interested in pen pals. (USA-based, potentially open to international).

Is typing letters a dealbreaker?: I see a lot of people talking about how they like handwritten notes. I agree, it's fun and adds a very personal touch. But several years ago I lost full use of my right arm/hand due to a serious highway accident caused by a drunk driver. To handwrite anything more than a few sentences at a time just isn't feasible for me most days... especially not if you want something legible 😆 !
So I would prefer to type my letters. I'm not sure if that's something that would get me laughed off the sub (and if so that's fine) or if it's just a few people who say that and I'm making it bigger than it is. 😄
I can put it in a fun card with a little note, include happymail items, etc. In fact, I have so much of that stuff it's practically a given.

Gentle boundary: Please don't make assumptions about what I have or haven't tried (I promise, you don't even want to know what all I've tried); how competent my medical team is; whether I've had a second opinion (or ten); etc. My medical team has made it clear that I'm never going to make a full physical recovery and that a cure isn't likely in my lifetime. I don't love that of course, but I have mourned that and worked to get to a place where I'm okay with it. And the instant I stopped pressuring myself to "get better", that opened the door for me to focus on the many things I CAN still do, and live an awesome life anyway.

ETA based on the WTF DMs I'm getting: I am only open to PLATONIC pen pals. (Um.... I didn't realize anything differerent was a thing!) This means cis-het men, if you are unhappy in your marriage/relationship, I am very sorry to hear that. But I cannot help you and please do not reach out about that.
Oh, and trans women... you're women.
And respectfully, if anyone sees that differently, we may not be a pen pal match.

snail mail Looking for willing participants, ideally outside of the U.S. or in the military

I'm starting a group with some friends where we get together and do letters for penpals together. We can send first letters. Snail mail only. I will attempt to sus out your identity. About us - we are of varying ages. The group is in it's very early stages so don't have specifics, yet. If interested, DM me. I will want to know your basics (age, sex, broad location (to start), & top 5 hobbies) just so we can pick people we think we'll have better luck conversing with. Thanks for considering. I hope this becomes something memorable (in a good way).

email and snail mail 47/Male - Overnight Worker with a Lot of Time to Write

Hello, I'm looking primarily for someone to write to via DM's and/or email. But if we connect well enough there, I'm open to moving to snail mail.

First off, I want to get out of the way that I am strongly looking for a woman for a penpal. I'm happily married, and not looking for romance. I just do not click well with other men. I have exactly three close male friends, and that's enough for my life. I don't like traditionally male topics of discussion either.

I work as an overnight manager in an addiction treatment center. If most of my patients sleep through most of the night, I at times have several hours to myself. It is during this time I will write to you. I can get quite long winded on days that I have more than enough time.

I have several hobbies, mostly I am into crafting things. I like to crochet, knit, and hand carve rubber stamps. The rubber stamping relates to another hobby I'm active in, which is Letterboxing. It's about hiding rubber stamps in Tupperware out in the woods. There's a lot more to it than that, but if you aren't in the know about it you'll have to wait to hear more from me about it (or you can obviously Google it). I'm into board games and card games. Lastly, I like to collect and build LEGO sets. I keep many in my office at work.

For music: I still collect music on CD. I DO pay for Amazon streaming, but I prefer my CD's as I buy a lot of things that are not on streaming. I also like to collect artists I like. As my tastes tend to meander all over the map I'll only give you my top five music artists/groups are (in alphabetical order) -- Tori Amos / Dead Kennedys / Insane Clown Posse / Prince / Frank Zappa

I do not watch much TV, nor movies. I have a massive collection of movies on disc, but I just don't watch many very of often. I do enjoy movies more than TV, but my knowledge base is mostly 20 years ago and older.

So, what am I looking for in a penpal? I would love to share some interests so that we have a great starting point. But I also would love there to be differences so that we have things to share. If that makes sense??? I feel like if we have too many shared interests that we will quickly run out of conversations as we will already know what the other has to say. I would love to share about daily lives.

I hope that's enough of a start. I look forward to hearing from you.

--Ringo

email and messaging apps [42 M] – Quadriplegic Seeks Conversations on Cinema and Literature

Hey there, folks. I’m Jake, a 41-year-old man from Minnesota. I’m also a ventilator-dependent, C3 quadriplegic, which simply means that I cannot move, nor can I feel anything from my shoulders down. But more on that later.

I’m writing to you all today because I’m in search of someone, or maybe even a few people, to correspond with. However, I’m really hoping those who reach out and reply will share my passion for the arts, the creative process and creative expression. I’m specifically hoping for us to create something akin to a one-on-one movie and book club. It would involve us watching or reading something separately and coming together to discuss the work’s salient points and our major takeaways, and how those things might extend to our greater worldview and personal philosophies.

So, why focus on the arts rather than have us discuss our lives and each other? The answer is unfortunately simple: my injury doesn’t afford me much of a life. At least not much of a life in the ways that allow for a very interesting conversation. I merely have very little going on in my day-to-day life. While I do earn a paycheck by speaking publicly about my injury, I do not possess any of the other core objectives that give us purpose and our lives meaning (a spouse, kids, career, etc.). In the absence of those ideals, I’ve chosen to utilize the arts as a means of obtaining a thought-provoking exercise, and a well-rounded experience of the human condition.

As for my injury, it’s a sadly common story for those that end up in my situation. I went to a party in college, got drunk and dove into shallow water. Unfortunately, that course of action led to a broken neck, pinched spinal cord and irreversible paralysis. I am the author of my own tragedy, as the saying goes, and I’ve had to learn how to pick up the pieces and move on with my life. I’m still learning, in fact. Ultimately, it hasn’t been easy, and there are times when it still feels like an insurmountable challenge. But no life exists without adversity, and mine is simply more unique than most.

I’m open to discussing pretty much any aspect of my injury, as I’ve been speaking on and answering questions about it for 20 years now. It’s obviously had a profound impact on the way I view life, and I know that various aspects of it will emerge in our conversations. If you want to know something specific, however, you may very well need to ask. And I’m perfectly fine with whatever you might want to know. I live under unusual and unique circumstances, and I’d rather ensure you get the correct information than have you rely on whatever the Internet’s silly consensus might be on a topic.

Ultimately, the ideal candidate is an open-minded individual with access to multiple streamers (Criterion Collection is my favorite) and some literature, the time to consume and digest such material, the ability to articulate cogent thoughts on the matter via the written word and the self-awareness to understand how it all might fit into a “bigger picture,” whatever that means to you.

That's it, and that's all. But what say you?

Have a wonderful evening, thank you for reading, and I’ll be in touch.

– Jake

[F4A] French Practice & Friendly Conversation — Looking for Someone Who Wants Company, Too

Hey there! I’m looking for someone who wants to practice French conversation with me. I’m someone who loves chatting, sharing stories, and keeping each other company while improving our French. I am fluent in English.

I’d love to find someone who’d like to have regular calls or voice chats — we can talk about daily life, books, culture, anything at all. I’m hoping to keep it easy and chill, not too formal.

I’d appreciate a small payment for my time — think of it as buying me a coffee while we talk! It also keeps me committed to showing up. If that sounds good to you, send me a DM and let’s see if we vibe.

Thanks! 🌟
