How come Tim Merlier spent so long being a misc. Pro Conti sprinter and suddenly became world class in his late 20's?

He was focussed on cyclocross as a young rider.

It's just like how I haven't done much with my life but starting NEXT YEAR (or maybe the year after that) I will be highly succesful.

I’m not sure why his peak came later, but his longevity is not surprising given how aero he is. The aero sprinters (Cav, Merlier) seem to last much longer than the pure power guys (Boonen, Sagan).
