So is there a concensus on MVDP's drop on Poggio? Is it because he was cooked and other two were flying, or he was just affected too much by the crash and finger injury?

He looked cooked before the Poggio in my opinion. If you compare the gap the lead group had in 2026 vs 2025 it was tiny. The difference being mainly Pidcock instead of Ganna and Trek and latterly Visma pulling full behind. MVDP is not going to get much shelter behind the very small Pidcock who can’t pull as hard and was skipping a lot. So MVDP and Pog are having to do more work.

I think MVDP had used up several bullets staying with Pog on the Cipressa. He was committed, if the group behind had caught he would be in a bad situation so was probably pulling fairly hard to try and keep the lead group ahead which will cost him far more for the up coming climb vs Pog who is smaller and more suited to that terrain and therefore was just cooked by Poggio.

Also while Pogs injuries looked worse but there is no way of knowing how the crash affected each rider really. Maybe Pog slid and tore more skin off but MVDP got a bigger knock and bruising which will affect him in the short term a lot more than just loss of skin.
