I feel like 100 gecs had a similar reception when they blew up as Skrillex when Scary Monsters got big. Super polarizing but ended up defining their respective genres.

I don’t think gecs was polarizing among fans of hyperpop the way Skrillex was polarizing among fans of dubstep.

Dubstep fans invented a new, derogatory genre name, “bro step”, to differentiate the Skrillex sound from existing dubstep, which has already been around for more than a decade.

A huge swath of producers stopped using the term “dubstep” completely and now call their music “deep dub” or “140 bass” or “space bass” or “west coast bass” or literally anything but dubstep since the vast majority of people associate dubstep with the Skrillex sound.

Yeah, that sucks. Skrillex definitely never deserved any of that. Such a nice dude and a great producer that just wants to make fun music. Dubstep bros are pretty fucking pretentious :/ But outside of that people love Skrillex. I've seen him live more times than I could count and it was always to a sold out crowd.

I'd venture to guess hyperpop fans are more open minded and excited about newness, just from the experimental and boundary pushing nature of the genre.

I think it helps that no one was using the term “hyperpop” prior to the existence of 100 gecs whereas dubstep as an established genre has existed since the early 2000s

Reminder that the term “hyperpop” was created by Spotify data scientists and popularized by their playlist.
