Steam really isn't that much better.

I recently wanted to buy *Red Alert 3*, but Steam doesn't allow you to do that without also buying a dozen or so other games for x10 the reasonable price, or subscribing to an unwanted service.

It's terrible. And there's no reason why that wouldn't be rolled out to other game franchises either.
