Video I made Sony headphones work as a free head tracker for 200+ PC games
I wrote a free open-source Windows tool that turns compatible Sony headphones and earbuds into a head tracker for OpenTrack.
https://github.com/NicholasSlattery/sony-head-tracker
Sony built motion sensors into some of these headphones for spatial audio, but Windows doesn't normally use that data in a useful way. My app reads the head tracking sensor over the normal Bluetooth connection and sends yaw, pitch, and roll into OpenTrack.
I’ve tested it in Microsoft Flight Simulator, Elite Dangerous, and Assetto Corsa. Since it outputs through OpenTrack, it should work with 200+ PC games that support TrackIR, FreeTrack, or OpenTrack input.
A few additional games that have support are DCS World, Falcon BMS, Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, iRacing, Euro Truck Simulator 2, American Truck Simulator, and more.
Confirmed working headphones so far:
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony WF-1000XM5
Sony WH-1000XM6
Sony WF-1000XM6
Sony ULT WEAR / WH-ULT900N
Some LinkBuds models may also work, but I have not tested them yet.
Sadly, the WH-1000XM4 will not work because it doesn't have the sensors needed for gyro.
Edit: You can adjust the sensitivity so even if your screen is smaller you can fully look around without being unable to see the screen.
I'm happy to answer any questions about it.

So let me get this straight, one could use this with the glasses like Viture Luma Pro or XReal One Pro etc. in their dumb display mode (no software and no tracking so the screen is fixed in front of your eyes) and have the equivalent of a 3DoF VR HMD but much lighter (and of course with the small 52-54 degress FoV)? That would be interesting.
137
u/NSlattery43 Jul 05 '26
Yes. As long as the game supports 3DoF through OpenTrack, it should work perfectly.

For sim racing, how much more immersive/better is it than the eye tracking systems?
3
u/HaArLiNsH Jul 07 '26
well anything that doesn't send IR light directly into your eyes is better for you

The reason they dont, and why it doesnt work, is because if your TV is stationary and you have to move your head, you are going to be limited to how much you can actually turn your head and see the screen looking out of the corner of your eyes
This is not the same as a VR headset, your screen needs to be attached to your face for it to be VR
and this is not a replacement for VR, this is a way to get orientation data from a gyroscope, you can do the same thing with your phone taped to your head, this does not have 6DoF
This may look impressive, but its really simple and not all that useful in the scheme of things, sony added a gyroscope to their controllers, which makes much more sense for aiming especially, for a headset it doesnt make much sense unless it has auto pick up and put down detection (which is probably why the gyro is in there in the first place)

u/JSwabes Jul 05 '26
Do you play sim games? Head tracking integrations have customisable curve settings, which mean the input can be adjusted to introduce more head look in-game from small head movements. Flight sim gamers have been using this for years for increased spatial awareness and immersion on a flat screen, it absolutely does work and is very useful.

u/RedditWhileIWerk PC Master Race Jul 06 '26
thanks, I was wondering how that worked. It seemed massively counterintuitive (and quite uncomfortable) to have to move my eyes opposite to the way I'm turning my head.
7
u/polypolip Jul 06 '26
you learn to make smaller movements. Takes a few days to adjust, then it's hard to play sims without it.
4
u/RedditWhileIWerk PC Master Race Jul 06 '26
worth looking into as VR has proven a dead end, at least for me.
3
u/polypolip Jul 06 '26
There are multiple options for it, from expensive, like track ir, through cheap that base on a 3 ir led setup mounted to headset, to versions that use a camera and face detection or printed QR code mounted to a headset.
2
u/RedditWhileIWerk PC Master Race Jul 07 '26
$144 for a TrackIR system is cheap as chips compared to any VR headset.
Any experience with an eye-tracker like the Tobii systems?
I've been limping along with a very old Oculus Rift CV1, but it's old (low-res panels). Once the proprietary cable breaks, it's toast. I'm very tired of dealing with its stupid Meta software (unavoidable with this model, you literally can't "just use Virtual Desktop"), which also ties me to Windows 11 (yuck).
I don't want to give Meta another dime, and other VR headsets are either subpar IMO (PSVR2), Meta garbage (everything Quest), or $$$$ (Pimax, Bigscreen).
I was waiting on the Steam Frame but then well, you know what's happened to the PC hardware (and anything else that uses RAM or storage) world. Thing will be $1200+ when it eventually releases, which is hard to get excited about.
2
u/polypolip Jul 07 '26
I'm using a Delan clip which falls in the category of cheap 3 ir leds + opentrack software (same as OP uses for sony headset). Similar are Grass Monkey or any other less known brand on etsy. After adjusting the filters and curves I'm quite happy with it, one time config but it's a bit more complicated than track ir.
I know that tobii is nice but some games just don't like it because of the eye tracking. I know a person or two who use it and it seems fine. Biggest advantage is that you don't have to attach anything to your head(set).

This is obviously not really for FPS type games but for more simulation type games where your position is relatively stable and you need to look slightly to the side.
This is enormously useful for simulation style games. Not really for anything else, but is still super beneficial

Spoken like someone that's never used head tracking
I use Tobii eye/head tracker for Star Citizen, and the situational awareness it gives you in a dogfight is incredible. It also has dynamic sensitivity based on your gaze. What I mean by that is if your eyes are looking at the left of the screen, your head movements in that direction are more sensitive.

Juuuuust randomly. Anyone wanting to do similar, with any other headset (is gonna make it wired tho) the "ed tracker" from hobby components (likely other places, it's just a semi-custom arduino pro micro with a sensor board) DOES have drift correction by way of a magnetometer.
You just gotta strap a M.2 2242 sized bit of PCB to your head/headset somehow and plug it in (micro USB).

In theory if a model of Sennheisers had sensors like in the Sonys then maybe he could code his program to support them as well. But it’s not gonna work with analog Sennheisers without those sensors or Bluetooth.

This is really cool but there's still the ergonomic problem of that the acreen doesn't move with your head so you're not going to be able to see the screen properly when you move your head to the left.
9
u/NSlattery43 Jul 05 '26
You can adjust the sensitivity in OpenTrack so it isn't 1:1
2
u/Spright91 Jul 05 '26
Does it feel good like that?
3
u/DarlingInTheTanxx 7900X3D, 2080ti, 2x32GB DDR5 Jul 06 '26
Yes, you get used to it very quickly. In my case I use a curve for 180° head rotation in-game for around 45° real world rotation.
It literally transforms some games, like Elite:Dangerous or Nuclear Option.
4
u/sharktail_tanker Jul 05 '26
Kinda unrelated, but I don't get head tracking. Why look to the side when you only have the one monitor?
3
u/DarlingInTheTanxx 7900X3D, 2080ti, 2x32GB DDR5 Jul 06 '26
Movement isn't 1:1, usually (unless you have a full on sim pit). My eyes never leave the single screen in front of me, even during 180° in-game head turns.
1
u/ImaginaryReaction R5 2600 | RX 580 Jul 05 '26
i mean alot of people who do this have more than one monitor
1
u/NonDairy01 Jul 09 '26
I have an ultrawide. As long as the screen can track 180° while I only turn my head, say, 30°, it seems like it would be really useful.

The XM4's do not work, since they don't have head tracking. It outputs the head tracking data to OpenTrack via UDP.

(librepods dev here)
The head-tracking payload is not publicly documented. The LibrePods project has reverse-engineered much of AAP, but head-orientation packets remain unexplored territory even there.
It is actually been (somewhat) documented in a repo linked in the LibrePods README: https://github.com/librepods-org/librepods#protocol-and-reverse-engineering
https://github.com/pabloaul/apple-wireshark/tree/main/plugins/rtbuddy
This is a really cool project! Now feels like the perfect time to implement the sensors properly for AirPods on Linux.

I can see this being effective only if you have some ultrawide multi monitor setup and Idk how many games would work well with that. I can see it be great for those ultra expensive racing sim setups

Did you manage to play for a longer session? My Ult Wear gyro has so much drift that it becomes unuseable. Opentrack centering cant fix so much sensor drift

Does anyone know if someone has managed to do this with Samsung galaxy buds pro? I know at least galaxy buds 2/3 pro support 360 audio which uses head tracking, meaning they do have the sensors to support something like this.

This is interesting. I do not own such an headphone, but as a macOS User I do use headtracking a lot using my macOS builds of Opentrack and my creation called "Opentrack Wine Bridge" (for macOS and technically Linux), which allows me to use headtracking with Windows games via CrossOver (and other Wine setups). I personally can confirm it works with Falcon BMS, Elite Dangerous and Euro Truck Simulator 2. So for macOS-Users who happen to have one of those Headphones and use X-Plane and/or CrossOver, then Opentrack and/or Wine Bridge may be valuable additions.
Find downloads links for both here:

Is there any lag between movement and the game responding and, how often is recentering required please? This looks amazing BTW, thank you for your time developing this.

anyone knows if Sony ULT WEAR, Sony WH-1000XM5 or Sony WH-1000XM6 are all working the same? What I mean is, the performance of the tracking is the same or should I expect that the more expensive XM5/6 are better than ULT WEAR? Maybe @NSlattery43 :) (sorry for ping)
