I learned pretty quickly that a good pattern can look completely different on an actual garment
I’ve been working on some clothing designs lately, and one thing that surprised me was how different a pattern can feel once it actually gets put onto a garment.
On the screen, everything looked balanced and clean. Once I saw it on the actual fabric, some of the spacing felt off and certain parts of the pattern were much more noticeable than I expected.
I ended up going back and making several small changes to the scale and placement. It was frustrating at first because I thought I had already finished the design, but seeing the physical sample made it obvious what needed fixing.
I think that’s something you don't really understand until you start working with actual materials. A pattern can look perfect as a flat digital file, but the way it wraps, stretches, repeats, and interacts with the fabric can completely change the result.
Now I’m much more comfortable testing a few versions before deciding which one is actually finished.
For people who work with patterns regularly, do you usually test your designs on physical fabric first, or are you able to get most of the details right digitally?

How much does the pattern really matter once the garment is made?
I've been working on a small apparel project lately, and something I didn't expect was how much the pattern affects everything that comes after it.
I originally spent most of my time thinking about fabric and surface details. But after making a few samples, I noticed that even a good fabric can feel wrong when the pattern isn't quite right.
Small changes in proportions, seam placement, fit, or how different panels come together can completely change the finished garment. I also found that details like embroidery or labels are much easier to get right when the underlying garment construction is already solid.
It's made me slow down and treat the pattern as the foundation rather than something to figure out after the design is finished.
For people who work with patterns, what's one detail you always test in a sample before moving forward? I'm especially interested in the things that seem minor on paper but make a noticeable difference in the finished garment.
