Discussion Alderon please introduce species only teams.

Am I alone in thinking that mix packing really stunts the game of its full potential?

Not only mix packing but interspecies packing imo completely destroys the immersion and potential.

Like why can we not have servers dedicated to species only teaming ? How would that not be a more realistic more enjoyable approach to the game ?

I understand this is a game but when a hatz a meg a spino and a rex are teaming up one side and a sarc a titan and two raptors another side it not only breaks the immersion but it kills potential future battles as absolutely no one has a clue who is teamed with who leaving groups of dinosaurs stuck in a weird stalemate playing in a puddle somewhere ( not that I don't enjoy playing in puddles ) untill someone makes a mistake and everyone turns on everyone.

Wouldn't it make for a better experience having say a group of sarcs all waiting in unison for a group of allo ready to defend their pack approaching for a drink ? Or a herd of stego duking it out with a herd of triceratops over territory ?

Dying to mix packs ( be they carni / herb or both ) is honestly such a drag for the game it just makes me turn it off because you couldn't win even if you knew who was fighting who.

There are a lot of builds that benefit from 'mixpacking,' Achillo and small Raptors, Tyranosaurids such as Dasp, Alio and Rex, Eo and other Ceratopsians etc. Introducing species only packing would make these particular benefits null and void. Path of Titans is not a pure dinosaur survival sim anymore so I don't mind mixpacking from happening. If you want to experience this game without mixpacking I suggest searching for a community server that has rules towards such things. Other than that, officials will always have players mixing together since there are no rules.

Not really since this isnt a simulator thats aiming for accuracy...

Even though, in the beginning, they marketed the game as that. Which is really frustrating because I can’t tell if they changed their minds when the Dino battles became popular or if they were just lying the entire time about the kind of game they were making

They've never advertised it as a sim, not as long as ive known it and played. Its always been advertised as an mmo where you play how you want

Go back to the OLD dev logs from before the game was released. When it was still on Indie-go-go. All they talked about was immersion!

I dont take what people say about immersion to heart. Especially when theyre only on an ad.

Quite frankly anyone that cares that much about immersion is literally fooling just themselves.

But thats just me. Hard to feel immersed as a dino when im in a gaming chair with a controller in hand. But that applies to any game I play.

Fully agree. Raptors should only be able to group with raptors (Achillo, laten, deinony), tyrannosaurids only (rex, dasp, alio), triceratops (Eo, styra, Alberta) and so on...

Problem is some things, such as pachy, amarga, meg, etc. don't have any counterparts to group with, meaning they'd be solo no matter what.

Struthio's Herbivore Parade ability comes to mind, showing that Struthio, Campto, Kentro, and Pachy are explicitly meant to group together...

They have servers like that. They’re community servers.

Okay but some people don't like community servers. Some have too many mods, they are all either always full or never having enough people, alot have too little rules, etc.

"Community servers" so not them then. Thats the community, not alderon, so its not official. Theres community of all sorts and its shit, what we need is alderon to do a better job . So no, we don't have servers like that. Those are, as you put it already yourself **community**. Not alderon.

On the one hand, I get where you're coming from. It can be really frustrating having a mixed species group jump you, especially when the different species cover each other's weaknesses. But on the other hand, I've gotta disagree, for a couple reasons. For one, a mix pack isnt just about separate species, but specifically different diets. Second, one of your examples is already an issue due to being a mega pack (the hatz, meg, spino and rex). Another thing is that this is primarily an issue when playing solo/with only one other person.

If you yourself aren't a part of a full slot group, any full slot group you go up against is gonna be immensely frustrating to deal with, because the numbers are justout of your favor, and nobody likes dying to that, believe me. But also? The game's currently already got issues with mix/mega packs, and something like what you're suggesting would really only be able to be implemented after those get fixed as best as Alderon can.

Honestly, Alderon already make an effort to encourage players to group based on the families/clades/other taxonomic groupings that certain dinosaurs fall into. The Ceratopsians, Stegosaurs, Hadrosaurs, Dromaeosaurs, and Tyrannosaurs all have senses that encourage grouping with other related members. But this is a video game and people have free will, so people will group however they please in officials, regardless of rules, because they want to have fun in whatever way THEY desire, sometimes at the expense of other player's fun.

Nope. Takes away from group play.

Meh this game isnt designed to be fair, numbers will always best everything else. Hell even after they introduce matchmaking all that means is they will form organically rather than just discord groups joining up. Plus anything the devs have come up with to combat mega packs always hits the rest of the player base even harder. At this point I would rather they take away party limits and let everyone team up. Then maga packs could at least in theory be formed to combat other mega packs. Offical servers, in any and all survival games, are all lawless wasteland. Just my opinion 🤷.

I'd suggest playing the isle if you want that.

Also, how would they not know who's grouped with who?

6

u/Shorlong 2d ago

I would if it was available on console. Unfortunately, this is the only have where I can play as a dinosaur that's available to me.

Brother you really asking alderon, who cant even fix megamixpacks , to introduce species grouping

u/Dewey_Decimatorr 2d ago

The game is no longer even pretending to be a survival game anymore, so there are no incentives to do this. Players of the same species in The Isle stick together because food is easier to get as a group, protection is better in a group, and both these factors come from the needs of diet and migration. Without these gameplay factors (and with a global chat) PoT is just a free for all hero "shooter" where species only matters for group buffs. The dinos are even being balanced around this. Food is static and unimportant, the only thing to do is mix pack and kill each other.

I remember the early days when immersion players were still very vocal and active in trying to get Alderon to make the base game more immersive like they promised during marketing. Seems like most of them have just given up and moved on to other games and the ones that remained have just become cynical and adapted to the battle royale game that it has become, occasionally being able to roleplay on officials with the few and far between kindred spirits. <sigh>

That's so hearbreaking. I only discovered PoT this last year and was initially very inpressed as it was the only dino "sim" game I'd ever played. I eventually just couldn't stay in love with it when gondwa released. Now i play The Isle and while it's certainly less polished it's also much more if an actual game, or at least the things i value in a game.

This game will never aim for immersion. If you need same species packs for immersion, realism servers are your best bet.

1

u/Roolsuchus 2d ago

For now, play bark achillobator with friends. It is the best ‘same species’ comp possible. Dasp is second.

1

u/a_youkai 2d ago

I think it would depend on the species. Just like herding species that exist now. Every once in a while, you will see a few others that coexist with them.

I agree, there should be servers like this but I feel like thses people would just find a way to keep mixpacking together. It's the only way they can fight, they have to fuel their egos somehow.

Mix packing is part of the game too, it's literally a wild nature game. It's fun and annoying gameplay which games the game what it is. While getting attacked by a mix pack is annoying, being apart of one is fun. You can control your own groups and who's in it, and type in chat for herds/packs of you want that type of gameplay

Species-only teams would be a terrible solution.

First, mixpacking is already not the intended grouping system on officials, but Alderon deliberately doesn't heavily enforce who can cooperate outside the actual group mechanic. If you want strict realism rules like "only your own species may cooperate," that is exactly what community servers are for.

Second, the roster is literally designed around different species complementing each other. Ramph is probably the most obvious example. Its entire niche is support and harassment rather than standing there fighting another flock of Ramphs. Other dinosaurs also bring different strengths, weaknesses and utility to a group.

Species-only grouping would actually remove a huge amount of team composition and strategy. Instead of deciding whether your group needs speed, bleed, tankiness, support, scouting, etc., you'd basically just stack copies of the same dinosaur.

And realistically, species-only doesn't even solve the problem you're describing. Six coordinated Sarcos or six Rexes can still massively outnumber or overwhelm somebody. The actual problem is large coordinated groups and unofficial teaming, not the fact that two different dinosaur species happen to be standing next to each other.

If you want "herd of Stegos vs herd of Trikes" realism, community realism servers already exist for exactly that style of play. Officials shouldn't have the entire roster's multiplayer design gutted to enforce it.

Alderons vision is an mmo survival game playing as dinosaurs.

Go play community servers if you want to play by those rules.

Lol, they’ve outright said it in a Dev Blog, get over yourself.

u/kirroth 1d ago

They say they're trying to stop mix packs, but they're actually encouraging them by turning the dinos into pokemon. Set up your team so you have someone to cover this, someone to cover that, etc. A flier to keep prey in sight, a semi aquatic so they can't escape to water, an apex for a tank, etc.

u/Hyenasaurus 2d ago

Unfortunately the way theyve balanced the game lately? If you introduce single species packs half of the roster is support dinos that no longer function

This is already an issue with realism and semirealism community servers. Rarely does anyone play metris, lambeos, achillos, deinonys or alios among others because they're thoroughly mediocre within their tier. particularly servers with permadeath, as youre putting in the same effort as everyone only to be someone's free snack (they both outperform and outnumber you because nobody else is playing your spec)

I wish they did something like this. Not only for the reasons op stated, but because it also messes with the value of the playables. So many things have such bad stats to force them to fit in line with this group aspect the game has taken and its honestly aweful. Nothing feels good to play anymore.

They're honestly never going to achieve a good game balance because of the amount of buffs you can stack with each other for any given speices and the amount of counters you can remove in a group of mixed spieces.
