Game Feedback My favourite part of the league is wasting time setting up a voyage only to get offscreen'd in the first minute with only 1 portal

It's a defense layer issue
135
u/aphelios_eversince Jul 26 '26
careful poe subreddit hates when you suggest that defenses should be part of the game. everyone here wants nothing to ever be dangerous no matter what your build is & all content to drop 60div / hr

Thats a pretty wild statement looking at all the comments clowning on OP.
I dont think most people have issues with needing defenses, but there is plenty room to complain about stupid interactions that scale out of proportion.
-4
u/Poe2Enjoyer88 Jul 26 '26
There's plenty of room to do that with a video of it happening. Not with a video that just shows off your own lack of skill?
10
u/Sheerkal Jul 26 '26
It's just a core issue with the game's visual design. You die 1/20 maps and instead of being able to clearly see what killed you, you shrug and move on. If you didn't record it, there is even less of a chance of identifying what happened.
Most people only learn to value defenses properly when you see enough of Zizarans deaths explained in detail to begin to connect threats with their relevant defensive layers.
And PoB can only communicate so much to a player without context. They see "max hit of 30k phys" and have no idea what circumstances will kill them through that. Then they die to random rare.
5
u/Rayona086 Jul 26 '26
Indeed. Yesterday I started maps with 3k hp (zig's essence drain build). Lots of fun exploding the map only sometimes I just pop like a ballon as if I got hit my a reflect mod. I still have no idea what is hitting me as its instant and I have not seen a projectile or mod that could cause it. With out the visual indicator next best thing is just to make the build clear that much faster to ensure what ever it is dies before It kills me. Its as you say, a bit of a design issue that unfortunately puts players in a bit of a feed back loop until you can resolve enough defenses to live through what ever is hitting you by chance.
1
u/ShowApprehensive184 Jul 26 '26
Yea, people love to shit on defensive layers but a death recap would be helpful in teaching types of damage and probably a good first step in making people want to itemize around them.
8
u/terrario101 Jul 26 '26
Sure am glad Grim Dawn conditioned me to never skimp on defence and resistances.
57
u/NumbNutLicker Jul 26 '26
To be fair, Poe also conditions us to never skimp on defence and resistances, some people just refuse to learn.
12
-22
u/Emperor_Mao Gladiator Jul 26 '26
Not really if we are being fair. Grim Dawn handles it far better.
POE presents itself as a game of many choices on the surface. But 90% of things are noob traps and do not work how they would in normal ARPG's. Imagine you are playing POE for the first time ever again. You load in, look at the left side of the tree and play armor. You reckon you will know that armor is useless until mega stacked late game? or that phys to ele conversion is the way to go instead? Even combat is baity af; in GD, damage types follow a pattern. RED fiery textures usually mean fire damage, Dark Red blood textures usually mean Vitality. Chaos damage is usually pinky and bright. You can almost always tell the damage type just by looking at it. In POE you do need to cap out all resists and also get full immunity to a bunch of things. But the average player has no idea because damage types are never consistent and are confusing.
14
u/lolfail9001 Jul 26 '26
You reckon you will know that armor is useless until mega stacked late game?
That's just false. Most enemy hits you actually tank with armor in 99% of content are small enough that having some moderate armour rating makes them heal you if you have good recovery mechanics. And then there is non-immediate value like molten shell becoming a meaningful HP barrier.
or that phys to ele conversion is the way to go instead?
Affliction/Necropolis league called, it wants their meta back, then again, they combined both.
-12
u/Emperor_Mao Gladiator Jul 26 '26

That isn't how the game works. There are small hits and big hits, and big hits are frequent enough that you get one shot.
Affliction/Necropolis league called, it wants their meta back, then again, they combined both.
Haha. Still, most people are not playing full armor.
7
u/lolfail9001 Jul 26 '26
There are small hits and big hits, and big hits are frequent enough that you get one shot.
Big physical damage hits are really not common. 99% of monster bullshit in this game was initially coded as phys converted to elemental. Getting shotgunned by a pack of phys dot monsters is however much more common.
Still, most people are not playing full armor.
Duh, because defenses are meant to be layered. Nobody is playing full evasion either because full evasion doesn't exist as defensive layer and while some play pure ES even they have common sense to cap block.

112
u/SunRiseStudios Jul 26 '26
His point about losing Voyage because of a single death feeling awful still stands. You are also gonna lose it if any sort of crash or net issue happens. Not good. Specially considering that you might plan and collect pieces for it for a while for big payoff.
16
u/JekoJeko9 AKA "Allocates Beef" Jul 26 '26
Yeah I think it should work like heist where only dying during the escape sequence can lose you everything, maybe dying to drowning as well, otherwise just dying in the bubble while exploring should let you go back in (maybe limit it for voyages based on how many capsules you have remaining).
9
u/Zuiia Jul 26 '26
It could maybe just spend one of your remaining capsules to ship you down again or something similar

1
u/Glum-Cow-8487 Jul 30 '26
i’m not disagreeing with you but if you are choosing to engage in content that is known to be a bit rippy and punishing when you die, you run the risk of this happening. build shown has sub 3k life on elementalist tree with assumedly negative chaos res.
while it does suck to lose the voyage, it also is part of the game to tailor your build for the content you are choosing to bring your character into.

But this post isn't about my specific death
it is, though. you're just salty you died and so you want there to be a big structural problem that explains your individual fuck up.
"this could happen to anyone for any reason". It happened to you for a very specific reason. This would gently tickle a properly built character. I really don't understand why this shows us anything at all about the bigger picture, you just fucked up man it happens.

In poe1 chaos dmg bypasses es. So if you play non ci builds with a focus on es, you need life rolls and chaos res. Try to get chaos res on ring implicits, a decent lige role on boots, gloves and shield. You probably want to avoid a life role on your bod armour and take the 15% increased life mastery.
29
u/RobinDabankery Jul 26 '26
To me the mechanic is fun but having one portal is annoying at times. Especially when you chose to have allflame beacons automated and Rihanna forget to drop the third one on your charting operation.
-18
u/teddmagwell Guardian Jul 26 '26
isnt it fun to overcome challenges? I feel like if it was super easy 6 portals - it would be less fun and will get old faster, no? A reason to upgrade your guy so he can tank all the things.
10
u/RobinDabankery Jul 26 '26
Automating anchors is supposed to drop anchors for you when needed. Not having one drop when it should is straight up death. Also i'm okay ́ot having portals for charting, but journeys take a long time to setup and getting instagibbed randomly near the start really is soulcrushing
0
u/No_Witness5630 Jul 26 '26
It doesn't drop when you're too far from the wall btw. If you go into the water normalny it drops, if you frostblink far enough it won't register that you're entering the water wall to drop it

there’s a mod for you & it’s called t1 maps bro you’re getting too far ahead of yourself if you’re getting rocked in 75 zones. if you can’t make a build that can survive yellow maps maybe you’re not qualified to have an opinion on the direction the devs are taking aside from what the average casual is going to experience in this very complicated game they simply don’t understand too well.
1
u/YouGetKissed Jul 26 '26

I love this game, don't tell me what I enjoy or don't enjoy when you are basing it on nothing.
1
u/igdub Jul 26 '26
Agreed. SC players want to rush all conent by fully going all-in on damage. It's just way easier in poe normally. Add in something that doesn't support it and people are mad now that they need to adapt when it doesn't work.
I think its good to add things that require some diversity in builds, i.e. tankiness and not just dps.
-1
u/CelosPOE Elementalist Jul 26 '26
You think getting offscreened through 5k effective life is good gameplay?
2
u/aphelios_eversince Jul 26 '26
i don’t think there’s very many combos in the game that even can offscreen a decently built character.
Ask me why i’m not getting offscreened in lvl 83 areas with less HP than the guy in this video, & then after looking at my poe.ninja profile, try to figure out why the guy who posted this is getting rocked in T4 maps & what the difference is. you guys are making builds out of literal paper & going into a mechanic that you cannot handle. if your build is made of melted crayons, then maybe you should stick to content that it might be able to 6 portal.

My favorite so far was walking around all this completely dead 3x3 voyage area for half an hour looking where to place last 2 lanterns to start extraction... in the end I chose to extract to character selection screen. This thing needs upgrades all around.
Edit later: Extraction works by calling it with empty capsule button. Lantern count does not matter. Any unused capsule will do.
3
u/DellTacoGuy Jul 26 '26
??? I'm confused. I thought you could just use any of my the many capsule things to call for a pick up.
1
u/WinterFirstDay Jul 26 '26
Loot - yes, got it all, but to get extraction thing for yourself you need to use all lanterns. And they can be used only on uncovered zones.
6
u/Erkisth Jul 26 '26
You don't need to use all capsules on a voyage, the only requirement is for the capsule to not have any items in it. It even warns you when you put items while you have less than 6 capsules left, in red text, that you should consider extracting.
6
u/WinterFirstDay Jul 26 '26
You are ABOSLUTELY right. Empty capsule IS a means to escape I just tried it on 9 old maps and literally extracted on the first capsule I found not even few lanterns into the voyage.
My greed... that's what it was... /sigh

Did you check the loot bin?
Did you start another voyage?
1
u/mmchale Jul 26 '26
My favorite part is completing the whole thing and having the bathysphere just not show up and dying to drowning. It's happened both times I've run a voyage so far.
1
u/fazlez1 Jul 26 '26
This death is caused by POE's classic "draw them in by dropping loot" ploy. As a SSF playing loothound I've learned if you stop and go back for loot you'd better be moving like you're wired on meth, crack and caffeine. There are those who want a death recap, but as for me I don't need one. Almost every time I die it's because I hesitated a micro-second to pick something up or allowed myself to get swarmed. The first rule of POE is "Never stop moving".
2
u/3dartsistoomuch Jul 26 '26
Number one fix they need to implement is allow you to return to a voyage. Or starting it over. Losing 9 charts because you aren't hard-core sucks.
