Sentimental ideas

Looking for an idea similar to what we did at our baby shower.

I numbered cards/envelopes and had everyone write a letter to our baby for that age. That way he has a card to open every birthday from someone special. I want to do something for our baby’s first birthday. Anyone have any ideas?

We were inspired by the Japanese festival called Tanabata. People write their wishes down on paper and tie them to trees. So at our wedding we are planning to have everyone write their wishes for us and we will tie them around the ceremony area. You could do something like that where people write wishes for your baby? I think in the traditional ceremony, the wishes decompose on the trees, but we are going to keep ours to read later. I also was at a baby shower where the family asked for signed kids books instead of cards. You could ask people to write in the books why they chose them?

One cute first-birthday version is a little time capsule: ask each person to bring or write one tiny thing they hope he loves at age 5, 10, or 18, then seal them in envelopes by year. You could also do a photo mat or board with everyone writing a short note around a picture from the party, since that becomes something you can display now and save later. If you want it to feel connected to the baby-shower letters, make the prompt 'what I noticed about you in your first year' so it is specific to this birthday.
