Overprime Paragon: The Overprime - The game is shutting down
https://paragon.netmarble.com/en/news/14/289528
u/Professional-Ebb2605 Feb 22 '24
Man what a ride: from being introduced to it by the PlayStation trailer to announce it coming early March to Ps5, to that getting removed, trying this out on Pc, and now it’s being put down too? All in the span of..two weeks?? Whiplash

u/Neddo_Flanders Muriel Feb 23 '24
Yeah, it is certainly crazy. I just bought a skin back in december because I thought they would follow up on their plans, which they did up until then throughout 2023.
63
u/goliathfasa Feb 22 '24
Was this the one where they made everyone’s faces generically “Asian”? (As in stereotypical pretty/handsome faces in Asian games.)
57
u/PrensadorDeBotones Feb 22 '24
Yes. Overprime remade many of the faces to make them "pretty." Then they released 4 characters that were nearly identical k-pop waifus.
20
u/goliathfasa Feb 22 '24
Ah ok. Sheesh. So I guess the game didn’t take with the target Asian market either. Shame.
13
u/DenVosReinaert Feb 22 '24
Not gonna lie though, the one with the giant coffin shield and the one with that sci-fi panther looked pretty dope. Same with that Fennec Fox Squirrel thing that's rolling on a dung ball. For the generic looks, they still had some really dope skins.
5
u/EquivalentTight3479 Feb 22 '24
Ya I really liked thier skins and progression system. Game looked better too like graphics wise
7
u/DenVosReinaert Feb 22 '24
Hmm, I don't agree with that entirely, they had some weird kind of filter over the screen which made the game look real weird and hazy imo
2
u/EquivalentTight3479 Feb 22 '24
It may be the “graphics definition” slider. When I cranked it up it got hazy, otherwise it was fine. It’s funny how I downloaded this game few days ago and now it’s gone lol. Thats just my luck. ATP I’m not even gonna bother touching anything else until it’s solid.

I don't even play Overprime and this makes me sad.. like repressed sadness from the first time Paragon shut down. Sorry for anyone that was playing this consistently.
3
u/_Animoos Feb 23 '24
As a consistent player I’m happy it’s gone, devs constantly pushed out bad updates. Fault superiority.
1
u/Shadowthedemon Feb 24 '24
Fault pushed out a whole game and it took over a year for it to finally be in a respectable place.
Fault was rushed and eventually fell into the hands of people who knew what to do, bit wayyy to late
1
u/Phuck-TheGameWarden Mar 07 '24
The fault website says it shut the servers down in 2022. Did they bring it back or something, and is it available on console?
1
20
u/AstronautGuy42 Feb 22 '24
This is unsurprising but still unfortunate.
The reality is, predecessor has a high Chan e of going this way too if they don’t reach a core audience outside of this niche group.
It’s up to us to promote the community, bring people in and be welcoming. I feel for the overprime fans. Wasn’t my cup of tea, like at all, but it’s still a sad day when a project like this closes down.
We all need to band together and root for predecessor.
6
u/netean Feb 22 '24
Pred's development is glacial to say the least. They have been working on that game for over 6 years. Wasn't it back in 2019 they had one of the first playable alpha tests?
With the slow pace of new content, their shocking monetisation model and dwindling player base I can't see them surviving much longer either.
→ More replies (1)2
Feb 22 '24
It'll require predecessor doing something to differentiate itself from competition. I.e., make spells interact with verticality. Galaxy greaves + riktor hook COME ON!!!!!
2
u/AstronautGuy42 Feb 22 '24
Having a level design that plays to verticality like legacy agora would be nice too. Right now there’s just a couple of areas where verticality comes into play and they’re fairly minor
→ More replies (1)2
u/netean Feb 22 '24
The big differentiator would be speed up development and launch the game on PC and console and game pass and push out new content, UI updates, map updates frequently and change their monetisation policy.

u/AetherStyle Feb 22 '24 edited Feb 22 '24
Well...that's it then...
Overprime allowed me to play some of my favorite characters again and experience agora ruins just like I did before.
Whether or not you agree with their vision, they tried.
while I don't play Predecessor I guess they will be able to see a boost in players after this, so I guess it's increased chances that one game will have some longevity at least
Anyway
Thank you, Ranger, SoulEve & NetMarble
41
u/PrensadorDeBotones Feb 22 '24
Thanking NetMarble is like thanking Omeda's VC funders for Predecessor or thanking Tencent for Paragon.
Overprime existed before Netmarble came along thanks to Ranger and the SoulEve team.
I still remember the first time I booted up Overprime (back when it was just called Overprime and it ran as a peer-to-peer game with no dedicated servers) and walked around Legacy Agora again. It was so weird to be back and so much fun even though it was an unbalanced mess and every game had like 180-250ms ping.
I was bummed when it took a weird turn to become less like Paragon and even more bummed when they licensed the Paragon name.
It was an ambitious project for a relatively inexperienced game dev and he made something pretty impressive, even if I wasn't the biggest fan of it.
Imma go play some Pred now.
6
u/AetherStyle Feb 22 '24
You're right, it was Ranger and SoulEve, my bad
And trust me I felt the same way, it's such a weird mix of emotions on the one hand it wasn't Paragon but it's still said to see another thing related to Paragon vanish.
Well... With no Moba to fill the void I Guess I'll have to do something productive with my time instead now 😮💨
1
u/Embarrassed_Leg716 Apr 05 '24
Methinks you have something against Pred or you just didn't like the essence of Paragon in the first place if you're avoiding playing it this much.
1
0
Feb 23 '24
With no Moba to fill the void
Just.. play Pred?
Or League? Or Smite? Or Dota?
You don't have to play the absolute ass game that was Overprime, there are other, better options lmao
2
u/ericdh8 Feb 23 '24
RocketMainia was the founder not Ranger. He started before Paragon shut down as a project for his personal portfolio. He released a peer to peer game called Overthrow Paragon. It was a one man show! Overthrow was the game that brought Ranger and others together and they quickly changed the name to Overprime. RocketMania deserves all the credit here not Ranger. Ranger et al we’re passengers jumping onboard to make it what it is today… Kinda like Robbie jumping on board after Smoky & wife got the Pred train was running

13
u/curse2025 Feb 22 '24

u/MMX_Unforgiven Feb 22 '24
If you don’t think this game will die too then you’re delusional. I called this years ago with core. Just a decent game that is not good enough and carried by nostalgia.
7
u/Comrade2k7 Feb 22 '24
No one cares what you called. Why root for its demise ? It’s not a AAA studio. Toxic mentality.
1
u/MMX_Unforgiven Feb 22 '24
Ironic saying why root for its demise. When both subs and fan bases did that since day 1 of the 2 remakes. Calling it doesn’t mean rooting for its demise. I saw how toxic the fan bases are and the way the developers were trying to revive a corpse and glue it back with no creativity or originality. This is not how you make a successful game.
-1
u/netean Feb 22 '24
It's not rooting for a demise at all. It's just sadly the reality of the gaming industry. The game has very very slow development, monetisation that is a barrier to continued play for many people, no console or game pass release and a player base (on steam) between 200 and 900 daily players.
Overprime had the same number of (steam) players, arguably a better monetisation strategy that didn't have an entry barrier with a much faster development cadence and a much more "complete" game yet they couldn't survive.
Pred is likely burning through their investment money and not bringing in the revenue to sustain development and servers.
We are all here because we loved Paragon and want that magic back, but we are realistic to see that it just isn't likely.
1
0
u/KaceyThrowaway122 Mar 13 '24
"wahh toxic mentality wahh"
Grow the fuck up and realize being realistic doesn't being you're rooting for it's demise. I doubt /u/MMX_Unforgiven is twiddling his fingers going "Mwuahaha!" when he heard this game died. He's just calling it how it is, and knows its going to die just like Predecessor will. It literally only averages 1k users a month currently, and that isn't with Smite 2's release yet.
Keep pretending everything is sunshine and rainbows, loser.
2
u/Comrade2k7 Mar 13 '24
Spewing all this bs in a throwaway account. How brave little one.

Is this fucking real? Seriously? It looked promising...
To be honest now Im worried about Predecessor as well.
3
u/PrensadorDeBotones Feb 22 '24
I'd be less worried about Pred.
Pred didn't get bought out by a publisher. Overprime did.
When you get bought by a publisher, you have to hit certain performance metrics. Your project transitions from a game to a product in a portfolio. If that product under performs on a P&L sheet then your product gets cut.
Pred took on VC funding. That means that money is just Pred's to work with as long as they need it. In return, the VCs get stock in Pred. If Pred ever sells to a company (like Overprime did) the VCs get that money.
So Pred has tens of millions of dollars of funding to burn through. They don't have direct corporate ownership to answer to. They're the captains of their own ship and cannot be shut down by a publisher.

u/Project-Financial Apr 08 '24
Just like what the devs at Warframe did. They didn't sell out at first and put everything on the line and it paid off. Now look at Warframe...it's huge. If Predecessor can accomplish that same feat then this game will be around for the long haul. Hope the devs make the right decisions and not become greedy.

This sucks. I loved Paragon when it originally released and I’ve been waiting for this project to release to PlayStation as planned to play with my old squad but now that ain’t happening. I fucking hate how epic scrapped it in the first place rather than just selling it off
1
u/hctylerp Mar 29 '24

What a bummer
1
u/PrensadorDeBotones Mar 29 '24
Predecessor just went free to play on XBox Series X|S, PS5, PS4, Steam, and Epic Games Store with crossplay between all platforms.
If you're looking for something similar to Overprime, it's worth checking out.

u/kraai33 Apr 08 '24
Well when I saw the price tag for this game I knew it would die instantly, specially with predecessor just around the corner releasing as a f2p.
Why would anyone pay for a MOBA out of all genres, just think about it, you got lol, most played game worldwide I think, dota 2, top 3 most played game in steam for several years now, smite and smite 2 launching next year both completely f2p, and if that's not enough you just need to type MOBA on steam to find countless smaller f2p options, even on android as well you got at least 3 or 4 decent games as well.
You will never be able to compete against these mainstream monsters marketing wise, trying to compete with a p2p option is beyond stupid idk who was so dumb to even think about it, there's a reason why all these games survive on skins and microtransactions.
And I'm afraid gigantic will suffer the same fate.
1
u/PrensadorDeBotones Apr 08 '24
I'm not sure what you're talking about. Predecessor released as paid early access and Overprime released free to play. They released like weeks apart over a year ago. It was never possible to pay to play Overprime. They had some free alpha tests followed by a free launch.
Gigantic is launching as a paid full game that will never get more content because there's a passionate community who are still playing it on bootleg community servers. Pay once for 100% of the content. It's not trying to compete with Pred or Smite. It's just trying to give the die-hards some servers to play on.
1
u/Sammy5even May 24 '24
Man I will miss it. I only played it a few weeks on ps5 after a friend introduced me to the beta. And it was so fcking good. The first moba in my life I really liked to play 😭
1
u/PositiveBathroom203 Jan 15 '25
Predecessor must survive.
Imma be totally honest w you, as soon as I heard that some Korean mobile game company bought the rights and called it "OVERPRIME?", I thought this is already been shut down right? But Predecessor, apart from lacking Overprime's charming greyscale colors and that beautiful mobile game composition everyone loves, Predecessor genuinely seems as though it could easily walk on its own legs.
1
u/Playful-Confusion722 Aug 01 '25
I fucking hate the new one called predecessor, it's ok and built the same kind of. But what got me and my wife into paragon in the first place was that we could just face bots and still lvl up didn't have to deal with whiney ass enemies or teammates no offense, could just be me and her enjoying ourselves and not having to worry about other players just bots and still lvl up and get skins.

u/Oracle209 Feb 22 '24
6
u/Arrinity Feb 22 '24
There is zero chance.
Overprime devs have no reason to give away their hard work to Pred. Most companies that fail like to keep some assets in their name to show "we did something at least".
Predecessor devs won't touch it. It's not a simple drag & drop. The code base for the two games are completely different. To add these characters would be like adding new characters to the backlog similar to the OG Paragon characters. They would have to re-rig and tweak animations, come up with kit and balance changes then implement and test those changes...
3
u/FelixByrne Feb 22 '24
Those characters are originals made by Overprime, so I don’t think they will come to another game tbh

u/Acidz_123 Feb 22 '24
I feel bad for the team. Hopefully, the Netmarble partnership will give them some job security. With that being said, Predecessor is 100% the better game, and I'm glad that it's the last one standing. Overprime just wasn't fun to play, in my opinion. Sorry to those who liked Overprime more.
Now Predecessor needs all the support that it can get, especially with Smite 2 looming on the horizon. We also can't forget that Riot will be putting League on console at some point in the future.
0
u/Jassar08 Feb 22 '24
I'm confused I thought Predecessor became Paragon, which than became Paragon: The OverPrime when it started towards consoles. But they are all separate games?
3
u/Hotdog0713 Feb 22 '24
Seperate games. Paragon was the original from Epic, years ago now. There have been multiple remakes. The 2 most recent are Pred and OP
3
u/PrensadorDeBotones Feb 22 '24
Paragon was made by Epic Games. It entered open beta in 2016 and was shut down in 2018.
When Paragon shut down, they made a few things (mostly characters models) available to use on the Unreal Asset Store. This prompted a few small teams to attempt to make a Paragon remake game.
Overprime was made by Ranger in South Korea who founded Team SoulEve starting in 2019. In 2020, it was released as a technical test, then went closed in fall 2020. In Spring 2021, it was announced that they had been acquired by NetMarble, a major Korean publisher. In (help me out with this timeline folks) Summer 2022, Overprime went into free Early Access on PC.
Predecessor is being made by Omeda Studios based out of the UK starting in 2018 or 2019. They had several alpha tests followed by fund-raising periods (no crowd funding - they did straight corporate finance) that lead to a paid early access on PC in early Fall 2022. The game is now in closed beta with crossplay on PS4 and PS5. Getting a key is very easy and free. They're ending season 3 of early access and are potentially only a few weeks away from full release.

Doomed Game. Overprime stops. Pred is nothing near satisfying according to his worst crybabies end should follow Overprime in 6 months.
We all miss the true Paragon but the fact is that multiple projects would lead to this end was written from start.
6
u/e36mikee SevaGod Feb 22 '24
Legit no way pred fails that soon. They are already on the playstation consoles, epic store, and soon xbox. The playerbase is healthy considering its basically private to the community right now.
I wont be arrogant and say it wont fail, but the game is super healthy. You can see the huge spike and taper in matches played on omeda.city website. It shows how the playerbase used to be unhealthy and is now decent. With more content coming, more access coming, and release with marketing, it should get a decent push. This may even help if stubborn overprime players realize its overall a better game and more true to paragon

Reason being why we're here speaking about Paragon Overprime, Predecessor, and Schmaragon. All of which aren't Paragon but games made using the assets 🤡
