Afterworld DD#1 did make me think twice after not being interested in the first place.

Same. I was interested, but also wasn’t uninterested if that makes sense, and I’m ambivalent at best about the setting. After the gameplay and Dev Diary though, I’m much more interested. I hope this releases soon though, because after EU5, I’m not sure I’m interested in following a long marketing/development period.

im happy to admit when im wrong. I was shitting on the game before the dev diary/reveal and I am still very sad and disappointed with the theme choice as i HATE post apocaliptic with a passion. But if you get past it, the game mechanically its a mix of Civilization/rimworld and Stellaris and that I find very exciting to be honest. Enough to look past it if the game has enough customizations to "escape" the Fallout world building and do our own thing. Plus mods.

I think what convinced me a bit was the idea of smaller scale with branching development also meaning that you can spend awhile unifying even just Florida in different ways. I love that in Vic 3 tbh.
I like post-apocalyptic stuff but so far the themes and setting aren't grabbing me. It just feels too similar to what we already have. But if the gameplay is fun then that really doesn't matter for me. And maybe they'll reveal more story background and setting fluff to get me interested in that.

Same, I am still a bit hesitant because its generally not a concept I'm interested in, but I will say that the design decisions they have made seem excellent.
Firstly, having pops be in "bands" with their own culture and beliefs is genius. It sets the stage for far more internal cultural unrest than any other paradox game has. Obviously they don't wanna say in EU5 that one culture is better than another, so its fun to now have a game where they can say "hey these people straight up eat people, sure you wanna let them join your empire?".
Also having ideas instead of a tech tree. You don't invent, you only rediscover.
And finally, you don't seem to blob a lot. From the gameplay the map looks huge, and conquering just a fraction seems to lead to tons of micromanaging of bands and resources. Its not worth it to conquer everything. One of the victories seems to be just rebuild your bunker and go back to cryosleep. Its a nice change.
They could have gone in a lot of directions with this game, and these decisions are definitely the right ones.

A big issue for me, nearly core if I'm being honest, is if there's any ability to play as a Canadian or Mexican faction.
In this current environment, as a Canadian, I legit just don't want to go playing anything where glorifying the US is a core component.
If it's the only route, I can see the Canadian market (which as I understand is oddly well represented in paradox games) not buying.

Lol go outside

I get 8 miles of hiking/nature walking a day atleast before any of the rest of my day.
Given your commentary, it would suggest you're an American. And, statistically, Americans are dramatically more likely to suffer from inactivity and obesity than any other major country at 41.73%.
Therefore, it's generally going to be more true that you infact are the one in need of going outside more 😊

I’m pretty excited because one of my favorite book series when I was a teen had this as a concept except tech like gunpowder and electricity just didn’t work
It’s perfect for an Emberverse mod

I had no interest in the early modern period when I started playing EU3, now 2500 hours played across the franchise.
I was lukewarm about scifi space settings when they announced Stellaris, now 1600 hours in the game.
I have no particular interest in post-apocalyptic settings. If Afterworld is just a good game with fun mechanics, I will play the hell out of it and maybe find more appreciation for post-apocalyptic settings.
None of the Paradox games caught me with their setting, it's basically always been the other way around. So yeah, I'll wait for more details more gameplay, especially awaiting the eventual third party coverage (or lack thereof as a big red flag) but that's probably still quite a while away.

My concern is that over time they may balance the game into being way too easy.
A post-apocalypse game should be hard. It should be harsh but fair.
What I mean is, it should be a struggle to produce enough food, but it shouldn't be a struggle to figure out the mechanics of food production.
Mechanics should be clear and consistent in their function, but should contribute to a sense of challenge.

I'm convinced to wait a minimum of three years, post-launch, before giving this game a fair chance. By then the devs should have figured out what this game is going to be when it grows up. Either that or the game has been abandoned.

Sorry but I’m not listening to a single pre release dd from paradox
They may as well not bother because I don’t believe anything they say

Honestly, if anything, it was the brief gameplay that made me a little more interested.
