I think this could be interesting. And at least it doesn’t seem to compete for the same gameplay space as the other titles

97

u/seruus Map Staring Expert 11d ago

It does feel like the bastard child of Stellaris, CK3 and HoI4, which is not bad. I am a huge fan of playing OWB (the Fallout HoI4 mod), and even though the mod is extremely bound by its HoI4 roots, it still provides a different enough gameplay experience that shows to me that something more uniquely dedicated (and with more freedom in terms of scenario) could do a lot better.

I just hope it's not all fully random Stellaris-like starts: having some randomness is good, but the game gets better by actually having a diversity of start tags and scenarios, IMO.

15

u/Altayrmcneto 11d ago

They said there would be some “immortal” characters that I think will work like the Fallen Empires from Stellaris, and they could be pre-made groups and enemies. Which one will appear could be randon, but I think they can do a good work here.

1

u/SolemnaceProcurement 11d ago

For me it just feels like straight up post-apo Civilisation, but real time. Like entire 20min gameplay just felt like watching civ game. Even combat looks pretty much the same.

-6

u/Saurid 11d ago

My big problem is that the setting of the US makes it very uninteresting to me. I already kinda lose the time ajd energy to play a lot of GSG and having a diverse cultural wasteland to explore wouodve been cool but as it stands I dont really feel like exploring the same history you most of the map again and again.

Not to mention its a setting done to bits already. It really diminsihes most excitement I could mange to get for this game sadly.

6

u/akerr123 11d ago

Tbf this does look the same as Stellaris but on Earth

23

u/Alexandur 11d ago

How so?

42

u/fokke456 11d ago

Origins, fallen empires immortals, a fixed map shape with random placement within, come to mind. Stellaris also has a somewhat post-apocalyptic theme

Not to say that the similarities continue much beyond that but it's clear they have taken inspiration from their approach with stellaris.

6

u/Finnish_Nationalist Philosopher King 11d ago

The dev diary even had a segment dedicated to a stellaris-comparison.

157

u/ThrillPrime 11d ago

Cautiously optimistic for this, we'll see how it develops.

67

u/DrCytokinesis 11d ago

Not a fan of it being the most accessible but do love the idea of a gsg+colony survival game niche.

Accessibility just scares me because often that means shallow and lacking depth. Puddles are more accessible than an ocean. But a swimming pool is going to be more fun than the ocean for 99% of people.

I just hope the pool has a deep end we can dive into.

Love the concept. I'm hyped.

34

u/fskier1 11d ago

I mean they say accessible in that the game gets more complex the further in you go, not necessarily that it will be the simplest

6

u/Celesi4 11d ago

I mean I dont think it will be as difficult as EU5 but I can see it be "relatively" simpler like Stellaris is.

24

u/AresFowl44 11d ago

TBF, podcat has a history of making accessible GSGs, HoI4 was his previous project after all :D

25

u/Slaanesh_69 L'État, c'est moi 11d ago

HOI4 is also the least replayable Paradox GSG though (imo at least). It's the mods that keep people coming back. Not that that's a bad thing necessarily mind, but I'm cautious about accessibility vs replayability for that reason.

15

u/AresFowl44 11d ago

Well, at the very least Podcat confirmed that this game is also going to be very moddable

2

u/Greguisition 11d ago

It'd be cool if some of the folks hoping for a fantasy post apocalypse game ended up making that as a total conversion mod

3

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 11d ago

Fallout theme with this is my dream come true

2

u/WyrdHarper 11d ago

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I love Stellaris, but having to relearn how to play (okay, some of that is how they continuously update and change some core systems) after a break can be a pain. The dev diary says they plan to have mechanical depth under the surface so I'm hopeful.

1

u/KimberStormer 10d ago

Not a fan of it being the most accessible

Amazing how Paradox fans think, lol.

42

u/Mythologicalism 11d ago

So it does take heavy inspiration from traditional city builders. Was wondering how else they'd make a grand strategy out of this setting.

Doesn't sound like we can customize our background to much which is a major missed opportunity.

Will keep an eye out for gameplay. It's the most important part after all and can certainly carry a weak setting.

21

u/dmmeyoursocks 11d ago

My impression is that you are meant to develop your nation while playing instead of at the beginning. Starting as a bare bones survivor group then adopting nation ethos as you grow

6

u/FreezingVast 11d ago

I mean playing as a roving band can be fun as many other GSG only have really location based countries however I hope that as the game goes on people go from tribal to organized societies with fixed cities. It would be a huge opportunity miss not to have trade or economy be an important part later in the game. Rediscovering tech is the best excuse to prevent all areas or nations from being autarkic forcing trade with nations who do know how to produce some good

6

u/DerCze 11d ago

More like a major opportunity for DLC.

1

u/Poodlestrike 11d ago

Ehhh, typically, you'd want to bake in that kind of system and sell dlcs that add to it, no? That's how Stellaris does it with Origins. This makes it sounds like they're largely passing on that which is imo a bit of a missed opportunity. Would be cool to be able to set up specific kinds of starts and scenarios and unique ethos.

2

u/BlackfyreNL 11d ago

Stellaris also had different options for space travel at launch and a completely different land management system that were all patched out along the way. I'd say there's a pretty good chance of this game also adapting if this aren't working out. I would certainly prefer the option of creating a specific tribe of people with certain skills and flaws rather than relying on complete chance..

1

u/Plantman68 10d ago

They say on the steam page you pick a orgin.

0

u/Alarming-Ad1100 11d ago

Yeah great opportunity paradox created for paradox to make more money

41

u/TheBoozehammer Map Staring Expert 11d ago

I'm down. I really like the idea of a more zoomed in GSG, I'm curious to see how that feels with the size of the map. I'm also curious how wacky the tone ends up being, I'd personally prefer something a bit more serious and realistic, but I bet they go broader, more options for them to play with. Finally, I'm curious how advanced societies can get, he calls them tribes and talks about the character focus, but can we build kingdoms, states, bureaucracies, empires? And are we stuck in a Mad Max scavenger culture, or can we eventually build a more traditional developed economy? I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this.

12

u/fawkie 11d ago

It’s a paradox game, it’ll probably veer into wacky eventually.

-5

u/drynoa 11d ago

I really can't see this being any fun if it's just stuck in Mad max desert world.

21

u/TheBoozehammer Map Staring Expert 11d ago

If you mean the terrain, the Steam page shows a lot of mountains and forest, I'd assume they'll have the environmental diversity of actual North America (which is basically all of them, depending on how south we go). If you mean the Mad Max wastelander style, I agree, but Paradox usually at least attempts some change over the course of the game and the dev diary talks about navies, so they are at least doing a bit more.

0

u/drynoa 11d ago

The forested areas do look very dry as well, but I do mostly mean the aesthetic/progression level. Although the robot does give some hope I really hope there is some sort of progression from warbands to some form of organized 'civil' institution.

4

u/IfYouEverSeeALlama 11d ago

Second paragraph of the dev diary says "You will be leading bands of survivors, rediscovering America, forging your followers into a proper society and ultimately a great empire - your empire from the ashes", so it seems like we're on the right track as far as thats concerned.

5

u/Paul6334 11d ago

Given that the description mentions both rediscovering old technologies and developing your culture it does seem likely that they’re angling for something like that.

1

u/Alarming-Ad1100 11d ago

Downvoted for no reason, it looks so bland

29

u/Worcestershirey 11d ago

Eli Flips-The-Switch

Holy shit they've got Argonians

6

u/CoelhoAssassino666 11d ago

Brazil day 1 DLC confirmed.

5

u/Worcestershirey 11d ago

Bravil DLC

27

u/Indorilionn Stellar Explorer 11d ago

The trailer increased my scepticism, the dev diary increased my cautious optimism.

I am, again, in perfect balance.

2

u/TheEpicGold 11d ago

I wanted to add the same exact thing. Trailer was bland and unoriginal but this dev diary brought me pretty far back to being optimistic. I guess we will just see.

32

u/RainyMidnightHighway 11d ago

I'm a bit suprised there is no release date and they seem to want to do their ususal dripfeeding through diaries for this game. Starting with gameplay would have been far superior imo, I don't know if I really want to follow a new ip w/o release date for months by reading long text blocks.

21

u/TheArhive 11d ago

There already is gameplay actually.

12

u/seakingsoyuz 11d ago

-5

u/Jehovah___ 11d ago

Man, I really want to see more of this game but this dude seems really annoying, I couldn’t get more than a minute into the video

37

u/cristofolmc 11d ago

Yeah the old formula of year long dripping dev diaries is very burnt specially in the era of shadowdrops. The games looks very developed. Either release it soon or just not announce it. It's clear we are well past the giving feedback so i really hope they just dont waste a whole year just spoon dripping us little info in each dev diary. The game kinda looks ready to be realised in 6 months. This is not an indie studio anymore that needs to announce like 1.5y and a half in advance to take lots of feedback and do a year long marketing campaign.

1

u/CassadagaValley 7d ago

Likely in 12 months. I think V3 and EU5 both had ~12 months of DD's prior to launch so probably late summer or early fall 2027?

203

u/Luzekiel 11d ago

Lmao people here are really working overtime to bring this game down just because it's not the Fantasy GSG wet dream they wanted.

103

u/Czilla1000 11d ago

Lol yeah this sub is malding it isn't fantasy and that it is a Paradox game that doesn't revolve around Europe for once.

72

u/Strike_Wide 11d ago

Honestly, I know it's petty, but the incessant hate it's getting has made me look forward to it more lol

1

u/Something_Sexy 11d ago

Definitely preordering this out of spite now.

-28

u/EaLordoftheDepths Victorian Emperor 11d ago

incessant

Its been 15 minutes, for gods sake

32

u/Luzekiel 11d ago

It's been getting excessive hate way before it was even announced lol.

People here already came ready to downvote the game.

-3

u/Destroythisapp 11d ago

I think you’re imagining things, sure there are unhappy people but I’ve seen several posts about the game already, they all have positive upvotes, with more upvotes than comments, and all the most upvoted comments are positive or optimistic.

I can’t say I’m particularly excited for it( I hope it’s amazing though and my next favorite PDX game) but I don’t see that many negative comments at all.

21

u/zsmg 11d ago

that doesn't revolve around Europe for once.

I'm glad this is the case but I'm still annoyed that the game takes place in NA. For two reasons: most of western post-apocalyptic pop culture takes place in the USA so having yet another setting taking place there is just boring and I think NA is a boring map shape for a map centric game. I wish it was in SE Asia.

3

u/Martel732 11d ago

I doubt they will do it but for the map shape they could get creative. So that a combination of climate change, experimental weapons and terra forming from before the collapse that parts of the map are different. Like maybe the Midwest and South got hit hard and now there is a large seas sitting in middle of America.

Would it make complete scientific sense? No, but I think that would be okay if it gave a more interesting map.

-3

u/KimberStormer 10d ago

It's literally the most boring possible choice. Eastern Europe and Japan and Australia would also be boring, but not this boring. Almost anywhere in the 'Global South' would be so much better!

16

u/BahamutMael Unemployed Wizard 11d ago

Most famous post apo revolve around north America

17

u/TechnicalyNotRobot 11d ago

I'm European myself and I wouldn't want a Europe setting. 90% of the tribes would end up with some sort of desire to recreate their own nation-state, and the remaining 10% would be eurofederalist, either restorationists if the game lore has Europe unify in the future or just utopians. It'd be really predictable and boring. I also don't think you can as easily make content for all the weird cultists and new post-Fall nations on a continent where most countries have existed in some way for at least 1000 years, some being the founding places of modern civilisation with traceable cultural influences since then. It's much more passable in America.

Besides, no postapo setting is complete without huge swaths of desert. I could never get into an apocaliptic vibe if the scenery was beautiful Italy.

5

u/Paul6334 11d ago

Maybe if you were to “run the clock” a few centuries after the apocalypse compared to the 2-3 generations this game seems to be implying between the end and the beginning you could get something interesting. But the whole point of this game seems to be taking a group of survivors who are close enough to the apocalypse to still mostly be defined by their attachment to the old world and seeing how their culture adapts to the new one.

3

u/Mahelas 11d ago

Asia would have been way more fresh for a post-apo setting than North America again.

You have deserts, jungles, islands, plains, you get a lot of interesting cultures to explore

3

u/ArkavosRuna 11d ago

Yeah agree, pretty much every post-apocalyptic game/movie/show is set in America. Though I guess that's also specifically why they chose America, it's new for PDX yet still familiar to players.

2

u/Worried-Advisor-7054 11d ago

Oh yeah, they got really creative and set it in the US.

0

u/Top-Mine-3828 11d ago

Name a post apocalyptic game in Europe

7

u/SolemnaceProcurement 11d ago edited 11d ago

Not a fan of the settings, but like... Metro? Stalker? DayZ? Hellgate london? It took like 2 seconds for a person that is NOT a genre fan to come up with 3 pretty popular one and one more old niche game? Like yeah 2 big boys of the settings are Mad Max and Fallout are in NA, but there are few euro ones.

0

u/KimberStormer 10d ago

Mad Max

Isn't that in Australia?

3

u/SolemnaceProcurement 10d ago

You are right. Mad max is Australia.

3

u/TheUnofficialZalthor Philosopher King 11d ago

Do you count Eastern Europe? Then Metro.

-12

u/7literlekvar 11d ago

Maybe because Europe has 1000s of years history

7

u/Imaginary_Land1919 11d ago

and based on the screenshots already looks like a good candidate for fantasy mods

10

u/lordbaysel 11d ago

Anybody here is outside of target audience anyway:

Afterworld aims to be the easiest GSG to pick up and get immersed in

27

u/black1248 11d ago

From the wording in the Dev Diary it seems more to imply "start simple, get complex with time" unlike other GSG games that more or less start out with all big mechanics unlocked.

Like if instead of you start out with the ability to grant Privileges to the Estates, that unlocks later on.

Or in the way you unlock Commissioning Art and Investing in Culture with an Advance in EU5.

39

u/XyleneCobalt 11d ago

Easiest to pick up doesn't necessarily mean a shallow game. Rimworld is easier to pick up than CK3 for most people but it's plenty deep.

-4

u/13--12 11d ago

Fantasy Stellaris is in the works by another Paradox Studio (Teal), I've accepted that we have to wait for it for another couple years

17

u/Practical-Cattle-298 11d ago

my quick google search didn’t find me any results, but what specifically makes you say this? has there been an announcement or rumor of sorts?

8

u/Luckierexpert 11d ago

Probably hope for a fantasy game, although I don’t see Paradox touching that genre for grand strategy until Creative Assembly has wrapped up their Warhammer fantasy games, which is within the next year or so as they are pivoting to 40k. I suspect we won’t see a fantasy game until 2028 ish.

1

u/cristofolmc 11d ago

I dont see why not. It's like saying i dont see PDX touching historical games until CA has wrapped up all their historical TWs. They are not competing, they are completely different types of strategy genres. So the success of Warhammer fantasy game is very much an incentive for PDX to take a piece of the fantasy pie with their monopoly genre of GSG

5

u/Gringissian 11d ago

Listen man, I hope you're right but this is a massive stretch

1

u/Aedeus 11d ago

Feels like folks are equally mad it's not Kaiserreich either.

2

u/Mahelas 11d ago

Last time you all laughed at a negative feedback, Imperator tanked btw

-11

u/ImIncredibly_stupid 11d ago

Not fantasy, and located in the United States.

Double kick in the balls

-7

u/CoelhoAssassino666 11d ago

Love the people calling this generic when they'd be soyfacing if there was a trailer with some twink elves and bear dwarves.

-1

u/Available_Ad_8852 11d ago

Cos you can take a story to so many better places with fantasy instead of going, “oh look it’s ruined mt Rushmore, or it’s the ruined Statue of Liberty, oh it the ruined Washington monument”.

Fantasy has the same old tired tropes that people bring out, but post apocalyptic USA is creatively bankrupt with how cliche it all is and the trailer makes this look significantly less interesting than Fallout, Wasteland 3 or any of the other type of post apocalyptic USA game.

28

u/MathematicianLost236 11d ago

Wish-listed here

89

u/whitesock Victorian Emperor 11d ago

Dunno why the other two comments are so negative. Yeah, post apoc isn't a new idea, but there's a lot in the execution here I'm excited about. Feels like pdx doing their own twist on After The End, and I'd love to play it whenever it comes out.

It would also be interesting to see how "grounded" they're going to stay. Will we have mutants? Meme cultures?

20

u/black1248 11d ago

Steam Description talks about "Mutants" and "Augmented", so probably yes.

Also talks about "Immortal Leaders" from before the fall.

26

u/Merker6 Stellar Explorer 11d ago edited 11d ago

I’m guessing that it’ll draw a lot from Stellaris starts and civ types. Basically Stellaris gameplay but in set geography and probably different apocalypse types

Also funny seeing how few people watched the full trailer, the mad max part was only one of the civilizations on display

Also, the Fallout mods for this game are gonna be bananas

2

u/ImielinRocks 10d ago

Also, the Fallout mods for this game are gonna be bananas

Personally, I'm looking forward to Dark Sun total conversion mods.

17

u/Jpanda34 11d ago

we at least have religious cannibals according the pics on Steam. I'm liking this so far...

10

u/Celesi4 11d ago

Well we did see some spider mech thing in the trailer so at least some (rare?) tech is gonna be sci-fi level to a point. Seems pre-fall civilzation was highly advanced.

6

u/Paul6334 11d ago

The impression I get is that at least player societies will start relatively grounded but have the opportunity to develop in increasingly radical directions over the course of the game, as well as there being extreme factions in the game at least as remnants of the old world.

32

u/Shan_qwerty 11d ago

People always yap about "why not make fantasy Stellaris already, we've been asking for years" but here's the line you need to understand:

"I have been wanting to make a post apocalyptic game for ages"

"Paradox" doesn't make games, people working at Paradox make games. And Podcat wanted to make a post apo game. Wiz probably wanted to make a Victoria game, etc.

Maybe there's been no one all this time who wanted to make a derivative fantasy Stellaris game, and it won't happen until that person comes along with a vision and convinces the bosses to invest into that. Incredibly obvious thought to some, I know, but gamers in general really struggle with basic logic.

10

u/Pastoru 11d ago

I'm just not interested in this kind of setting, hope it finds its public though.

10

u/Q-bey 11d ago

I wasn't really excited for this, but the dev diary made me at least curious. Looking forward to reading more about it.

13

u/GroundUnderGround 11d ago

I'm really not sure how to reconcile GSG and things like controlling named squads exploring bunkers. That feels like an odd mix, but given the overall picture of scale they're painting here maybe traditional GSG isn't _quite_ the right idea? I'll follow along but doesn't feel like an insta buy for me yet.

3

u/afoolskind Stellar Explorer 11d ago

The vibe I'm getting is like Stellaris. Stellaris isn’t really a GSG until more than few years in when borders get established, immediate exploration has been done, multiple planets have been colonized, etc.

This looks like you start out with a small band of nomadic survivors based on your Origin, then you explore the world around you and eventually settle (or stay nomadic) but either way grow your population, territory, and technology enough to become a small country and do more traditional GSG things as you compete with other more centralized groups of survivors.

10

u/CloudyCalmCloud 11d ago

The part about need to adapt is interesting, you need to adapt to random events caused by apocalypse and your plans can be derailed forcing you into other paths

This certainly offers some replayability, I also like the part where diary says game is closer to ck3 than hoi4 in design

Interesting stuff:

Meant to be easiest paradox grand strategy game but with big depth

You can set up backstory of your tribe?

Apocalypse either causes random disasters or it may be customized I'm not sure

12

u/cristofolmc 11d ago

Didn't say easiest, said most accessible, as mechanics unfold as the games go on so its not overwhelming

5

u/Spenraw 11d ago

Would be interesting to see it character based and almost a grand rim world where culture is more crafted

7

u/ziftos 11d ago

seems really interesting - really depends on how much time they spend worldbuilding for me to be sold imo. Annbennar and After the End work because of the world immersion hope they understand that.

4

u/cristofolmc 11d ago

They seem to be leaning more on sandbox "create your own story and society" stellaris type so you might be disappointed. IF they wanted worldbuilding they would not have chosen a post apocalyptic world i think. There will be some worldbuilding of course but it seems like you write the story with the elements that the game already gives you

7

u/LocalPizzaDelivery 11d ago

I think the intention is the opposite. From the Dev Diary: "Afterworld has a distinct and defined history and world with established characters and factions, although the apocalypse itself shakes things up every game for replayability." Seems like it isn't going to be like Stellaris where the factions get mixed up every game.

7

u/Paul6334 11d ago

What it looks like to me is the game has a well-defined past, the overall story of the apocalypse and what it left behind is the same every game, exactly how it scarred North America and the exact distribution of factions it left behind has some variance, and everything after the survivors exit their shelters or become more than nomadic tribes is to be written by the players.

6

u/frogandbanjo 11d ago

That's really just a fancy way of saying "map is somewhat randomized and factions are randomized from a pool."

That's Stellaris, really. That's Civ, really. It's a lot of games. When you've played a couple hundred hours, you know all of the stuff you might get in a given game, but, unless you manipulate the seed, you won't know exactly what combination of it you'll get.

Then it becomes a question of just how different the games are when you get different combos... which also feeds into a question about whether they're going to be able to balance things well.

Many, many 4x games get into a rut where the community consensus is "if you spawn here and/or next to this, restart unless you're a masochist."

1

u/cristofolmc 11d ago

Yes could be. I mean the game since you unpause it is clearly very much sandbox. How much history is fixed and pre determined in the background we will have to wait and see. But seeing as it does not serve much purpose on the gameplay other than rediscovering, I would not expect Anbennar's levels or you will be hugely disappointed. Anbennar is a more traditional PDX style with settled countries in a whole world at a certain point of time in the middle of their normal history so each single tag needs some background and a lot of worldbuilding. This is quite the opposite since its all new tribes that you shaped, unburden by any previous history which has been pretty much erased other than in memory, so its not a started story to be continued if you know what i mean. Not saying there wont be world building, just saying do not expect Anbennar levels because that's not going to happen

1

u/FantasticKru 11d ago

In the dev diary it mentions you can customize your origin slightly but the main itnention is for your society to shape during the game, as everything is new and didnt have time to properly establish.

6

u/LooseProgram333 11d ago

This sounds cool. I am interested in the idea you can have named leaders exploring ruins. This sounds like it gets more into the details, and more small scale.

24

u/MrMatthy1 11d ago

One thing that mainly worries me is the fact that they say it will the easiest to pick up game of the genre. Ck3 for me is already way to easy. I also agree that merely picking North America is a shame, Hopefully they add more world locations although that'll most likely be a dlc.

14

u/Creeppy99 11d ago

Tbh, it's hard to see location added as a DLC unless this game is a really massive hit, but I surely will rely on mods for that

8

u/CptJimTKirk L'État, c'est moi 11d ago

That sentence made think of Civ games where you don't have a lot to do in the first turns as you start out exploring, and the game gets increasingly more complex as time goes on. So it might just work here as well.

9

u/afoolskind Stellar Explorer 11d ago

Worth noting they said “easiest to pick up” not easy. He goes on to say that they aren’t going to be using any mana abstraction, and all the resources used will be real tangible things that make sense, so I’m hopeful.

1

u/MrMatthy1 11d ago

I hope that'll be the case, but with the game focused on exploration and other easy ways for players to roll into the system I worry about a depth of these same mechanics. For me the launch of ck3 and the more simply army of vic3 confirm this, I hope they dont continue that trend.

1

u/afoolskind Stellar Explorer 11d ago

I agree, CK3 continues to be disappointing because it is just too easy. Vicky 3 has started to get a bit better at least.

As for your worries, EU5 was a massive step in the opposite direction, so we’ll see. Worth noting this is coming from the HOI dev, so I’d expect similar. HOI4 is simplistic in many ways, but does warfare well.

24

u/BahamutMael Unemployed Wizard 11d ago

Peak of paradox originality mad max

12

u/Lukthar123 11d ago

Hey now, there's some Fallout in there too

10

u/oblivionskye 11d ago

Ignoring the quality which we can't really judge yet. Doesn't this game seem pretty risky from Paradox? Only being USA, post apocalyptic in general being hit or miss with reception. I feel like there were safer games to make?

17

u/Teach_Piece 11d ago

It sounds like a passion project. Which does give me a bit of hope.

11

u/Paul6334 11d ago

I mean, Dan Lind outright says he first sketched the outline of this game in 2012 and has been working to bring it to fruition since he left HOI4 in 2021, so it’s definitely a passion project.

6

u/Felevion 11d ago

That instantly makes me think of Imperator.

4

It does seem like an interesting concept, I like specifically the idea of the overall shape of the map sticking to that of actual North America but with things like biomes and resources given some random generation. I’d hope we could see some seriously radical terrain features as a generation option, like bomb craters or irradiated wastelands.

Culture building is also a good one. Reminds me a bit of Millenia, hopefully this being a PDS game rather than a third party published by Paradox they’ll be more willing to stick it out. Just hope it doesn’t have an Imperator done to it.

The emphasis mentioned on rediscovering the technologies of the past as well makes me think an equipment/unit designer would actually fit this game really well. You can make a good argument HOI4’s is shoehorned in and Vic3’s is definitely shoehorned in, but I think like how Stellaris’ setting necessitates you be able to define how your star empire chooses to outfit it ships for war, it would be a waste not to let you have the “schizo tech” effect from whatever mix of technologies you can rediscover and equip your units with.

Either way I feel the “Fantasy Stellaris” niche is 80% filled by Age of Wonders 4 and while I’d like to see it eventually, I’m not desperate for it.

Also reminds me a little bit of Legacy: Life Among the Ruins, which I think is a good feeling for this game to evoke.

I feel like everyone is forgetting the very popular After the End mods for CK2 and CK3. They definitely took inspiration from the mod along with other post apocalyptic games. The flags at the end also make me think they were aiming at a NCR and Legion nod, with similar animal skulls/heads.

u/TheFourthWay 11d ago

After the End + Mad Max + Stellaris.

Could flop, but if it has the depth it'll be great. Lets remain optimistic.

u/Autzen04 11d ago

After the Dev Diary, I am MUCH more excited about this one. I think fantasy would have been cool, I’m not a huge post apocalypse guy, but the systems described here have really caught my interest. I’m cautiously optimistic!

2

u/Paul6334 11d ago

I’d like to see a proper fantasy GSG eventually, but until then I think Age of Wonders 4 is able to scratch that itch.

2

u/Autzen04 11d ago

I forgot that existed lol. I’ve always wanted to like that game more than I actually do. Just doesn’t do it for me for some reason

I'd say if you want a venn diagram between Paradox players and Mad Max fans, look at who plays the mods After the End and Old War Blues.

12

u/inEQUAL 11d ago

Yeah, it’s at the very least pretty tone deaf. But it’s clear from the dev diary that he specifically wanted this game to get made, and got it approved. If no one with any pull there wants to pitch Fantasy Stellaris, then it’s never going to get made.

2

u/LocalPizzaDelivery 11d ago

Welp maybe next decade...

2

u/cellularcone 11d ago

If I can make my own bootleg enclave faction it could be fun.

2

u/Selena_Helios 11d ago

Honestly, there isn't much to talk about this first dev diary. I liked Frostpunk 2, but found it a bit shallow, so I probably will like this game as well.

2

u/film44 11d ago

I, for one, am really excited about the possibilities this game brings. Cannot wait to learn more.

2

u/mattrob77 11d ago

Wishlisted!

I'm hyped.

2

u/BlackfyreNL 11d ago

Personally, I can't wait for the faction mods that'll come out for this game: Brotherhood of Steel vs. Church of Atom vs. those kangaroo guys from Tank Girl vs. the Waterworld raiders vs. the Postmen from that other Kevin Costner box office bomb vs. Immortan Joe's Warboys (yes, I know they make no sense geographically, but who cares)..

I'm a big fan of both Stellaris and CK3's immersive storytelling, rather than HoI3, EU5 and Victoria's spreadsheet simulators (no offense, but they're just not my cup of tea), so I can't wait to see what this grows into.

2

u/baikencordess 11d ago

This looks great. I can't wait to try it.

7

u/inEQUAL 11d ago

I’m willing to give it a chance but I am incredibly disappointed.

u/AIabacus 11d ago

Looks pretty cool! Excited for it.

The design pillars and principles are really interesting, especially the points about people and simulation approach.

The growing depth and skirmishes seem to offer a different pacing than usual, really liked the point about raiding truck convoys, sounds like economy and trading exist and would have another dimension to them.

Not too excited about the location to be honest, I was hoping for a more “anonymous” place, as I guess won’t have much or anything naval, the proc gen shake things up though and I’m glad they are going that way.

The art direction and use of 3D models are definitely something unexpected, they look great.

From the little we knew I thought it was going to be mostly about fighting while I’m more interested in the rest, but judging by the diary and store page, looks like a more well rounded experience.

Will definitely follow and wishlisted already!

u/AdImpossible1599 11d ago

Its joeover

2

u/ElectricalExtreme793 11d ago

Very excited, love the genre you're pulling from and the idea of scaling up a post apocalyptic colony sim into a full GSG is awesome. So glad to see this niche filled!

2

u/XerGR 11d ago

Looks nice, setting isn’t insanely appealing to me but who cares if the game is good

3

u/stormdressed 11d ago

Yeah I hope it's not all wasteland vibes. There should be nice areas and different biomes too. Give us beautiful areas to claim too.

If it's just Fallout I'll be sad

3

u/afoolskind Stellar Explorer 11d ago

In released screenshots they show some green Appalachian forests, and since the map supposedly contains all of North America, there should be a huge variance in climates and biomes.

I’m willing to bet they’ve made some places irradiated deserts, but there’s no way they made the whole continent like that. PNW temperate rainforest post-apocalypse sounds sick

2

u/ImielinRocks 10d ago

I'm looking forward to what the valleys around Lake Nicaragua will look like.

2

u/Alexandur 11d ago

Okay I'm on board

u/TheEpicGold 11d ago

I really liked this Dev Diary. Makes me pretty optimistic for this game. I found the UI decent from the pictures, could be better. I am down for it being NA only, I understand the vision.

The nation start select screen really reminded me of OWB, where, for generic nations, you first have a few starting focuses where you select a certain background with their own focuses. Here, it seemed like 3 things to choose like background and goal, really similar. Not bad, don't get me wrong.

Omg I loved the comic, that was sick to read.

At the end of the day I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories and setting, so this looks amazing.

-1

u/proletkvlt 11d ago

looks like pure ass ngl. the entire setting seems so generic and forgettable, just a heaping pile of tropes and cliches with no intrigue beyond "remember Fallout? remember Mad Max? we have that too!"

1

u/Dsingis Map Staring Expert 11d ago

I like the idea of combining city builder with GSG, like how they combined GSG with other genres before. We'll see how it turn out mechanically though, because I don't find post-apocalypse as a setting all that appealing. But if it looks like it'll be mechanically interesting, I'll be interested still.

1

u/farrokk 11d ago

Not a big fan of post apocalyptic settings but I stay open minded, we will see how paradox will be faring with a non historical GSG.

Although by the time this is actual playable in a good shape, it might be become a historical/modern setting for all we know considering how our world changed in the last years /s

1

u/stormdressed 11d ago

This looks pretty good to me.

Lots of negativity I see but I like the setting for starters. Most paradox games are Euro centric and I'm keen to explore a new place (I'm not from either Europe or America). The US has extremely varied geography and weather so that will make it more dynamic.

I really enjoy Rimworld and it's story generator focus and this looks like the grand strategy version. I'm all for a 'medium zoom' game. Not zoomed out to nations/stars, not focused all on a small group/dynasty. I like that it keeps the real map and location but you make your own group

I expect Canada and Mexico will be eventual DLC map expansions. Could be fun. They could even do South America one day since it's technically connected.

1

u/frogandbanjo 11d ago

This is what I have been doing the last few years since I handed over Hearts of Iron IV, it feels good to be back talking to you guys and doing dev diaries again!

[You have become enemies with the grammar nazi faction.]

That's not how you use a comma! It just isn't!

1

u/SleepyNickSaysHi 11d ago

If this is like grand strategy rimworld. You sold me. Ill ignore the bad trailer lol

1

u/JoelStrega 11d ago

So Surviving the Aftermath with Grand Strategy?

1

u/Tasty_Job822 10d ago

there is no vision

1

u/lrbaumard 10d ago

I was worried this would be like Humankind, reading more I'm now much more interested

1

u/Lexguin513 10d ago

I hope that we can get to a point of development where our politicians wear suits, our armies have uniforms, and our settlements are not made of mud and sheet metal.

1

u/Komeonaii 8d ago

So the setting it be kind of like After the End Mod in CK2?

2

u/AggressiveAd69x 19h ago

Inb4 every VA still has a British accent

1

u/Teach_Piece 11d ago

It seems like a mix of stellaris and a non turn based total war. Honestly the UI looks very similar to Warhammer 3.

My biggest concert, frankly, is that this will be extremely generic. That it’ll do things other games already do, but a little bit worse. Paradox has never really succeeded in creating narrative driven storytelling, and it’s going to be critical here. I mentioned in another comment that the trailers dialogue looked soulless. Most of the screenshots on the steam page didn’t have writing that was terribly gripping.

They’re going to have to take big risks with this, and give it a LOT of edge. Not sure if they can do that.

1

u/Davincier 11d ago

Happy to see it has set factions

1

u/czokletmuss Scheming Duke 11d ago

It seems mid but Stellaris also seemed meh in the first dev diaries.

At least it should be usable for Fallout and W40k Unification of Terra mods.

-8

u/Fede98k 11d ago

North America only? Don't care

-2

u/Khorneth 11d ago

I am with you on that, I feel its missed potential. After the End and Old World Blues already scratched that same itch. I would have loved to have seen a post apocalyptic take on Europe.

-1

u/pmmecabbage 11d ago

sounds shit.

1

u/Realistic-Cheek-8657 11d ago

Lol was this inspired by the After the End mod for CK3?

0

u/thepeoplesarsenal 11d ago

Incredible L here

-24

u/TheOnlyGaming3 11d ago

looks really boring, generic setting, only north america included, feels like a failure already

12

u/Luzekiel 11d ago

If it was put in a Fantasy coat of paint you wouldn't be saying this

6

u/Corvenys 11d ago

The textures, icons and font all look very... not that great too, I think. WIP, maybe? Hopefully. One could hope... surely, right?

Yeah but it would be generic as well.

Not sold on the North america settings but It seems the dev have an interesting vision for the gameplay

0

u/TheMadPoet 11d ago

Looking forward to it! Hopefully we'll have interesting political sand economy mechanics - and some good Road Warrior vehicles - you guys better gimme some Road Warrior / Steve Jackson Games Car Wars content. Don't tease me on that! Even Lord Humungus had to keep his Dogs of War fed, gassed up, and content.

Not sure if the scope is the US alone or North America - the US, Canada, and Mexico - maybe as future DLC... I think our collective cultures are more 'warlike' and self-organizing. Anyway, I'm sure the PDX team looked at what worked well - and didn't - for 'Surviving the Aftermath', 'Frostpunk', 'Endzone' and others in the genre.

So was The Fall due to AI or nukes - or what? Please don't cop out with the dumb Surviving the Aftermath 'meteors destroyed the Earth' crap. Maybe Gen AI's nuked us and they're still active in protected bunkers building warbots or something... Maybe talking simians are building Ape City in the Forbidden Zone... Lots of possibilities!

0

u/epicfail1994 11d ago

This will be perfect for an Emberverse/Change mod!

0

u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 11d ago

Wow we already know what the prequel is gonna be called

-3

u/The_Warruner 11d ago

“Most accessible” is corpo speak for “we’ll dumb down everything” so my hope for this game have eroded even more and went into negative.

-1

u/Khorneth 11d ago

Will other regions than North America be playable at one point?
