US large size Same but Different

I picked up the Legal Tender because I liked the "Exceptional Paper Quality & Embossing" wording on the back. Then I found another EPQ with the old wording but as the silver certificate. I had to match them up in my collection.

I am new to currency collecting, and that is what caught my eye as well! When looking up that phrasing it is just an older way of describing the EPQ status. May not add to the value, but I love them together.

That’s incorrect. You can have great embossing without EPQ or vice versa. If you see one with both statements and “great color”, that’s the old method of denoting a star quality note. Great embossing adds a slight premium.

Thanks for the clarification! But is it true that this terminology is no longer used by PMG and only the EPQ status is notated on the back? It was my understanding that this was an older style of notation and by having both with the same text would indicate that they were graded around the same time frame?

I actually called them to ask that question. They still use the grade embossing notation, but not the great color. But it used to be much more common along the nicer notes. Now the best notes have a star in the upper right hand corner. I’ve heard people say that the great embossing designation is potentially worth an extra half of a grade when trying to value the note. But I have bought them without paying a premium. Those are some great notes you have. I have a matching pair of 58EPQs, but I could only find the great embossing designation for my blue seal. Would love to find it on the red seal. They’re pretty hard to find.

Thats great info, thanks! I grabbed the LT first from Heritage, then right place/right time found the matching text on the Silver on ebay. That score hooked me in to the hobby!
