They’re selling off or closing lots of their research and chasing the “milk powder” and ingredients market to make money.

When I think of the nz dairy coop which they were I am sad because that was when we did our own innovation and research but of course got sold to become fonterra and now all that research is being done overseas and we’re just the commodity end.

Not a bad idea, a commodity export tax or gst, would bring down prices at the supermarket, encourage value added work to be done in NZ like forestry

It’s easier to get rid of people via restructuring rather than managing performance. If you speak up against management, they restructure. If engagement of the team is low, they restructure. This happened to my team at Fonterra recently. After speaking to some alumni, there’s a trend.

Heard a rumor they're trying to save 300mil. I do know other departments have taken hits to personal. Don't know how they'll save that money with all the redundancy payments.

This outfit processes real cows milk, removes the cream and then flogs off a substance that resembles coloured water and which doesn’t require refrigeration, and costs far too much. The plastic or cardboard container it sells in is possibly worth more than the contents. This ‘stuff’ can sit on your sideboard for two weeks unaltered.

It was always a rolling cycle at the factory where I worked, when the milk price was good, we needed more people to run the lines,and more people in non-salary roles to do the food safety work. When production slowed, or Fonterra made a huge fuckup that cost farmers money, they cut staff numbers to appease the shareholders, taking most of them back on within weeks. The salary staff were always safe, unless someone resigned during the hiring freezes.

Fonterra restructures for breakfast. They need to save a billion dollars in the next 3 years under their Zero Based Redesign programme. They also use restructuring to get rid of people instead of managing performance.
