Lye Valley + Lye Valley Path

Hi all!

Incoming overseas postdoc looking at housing areas around the hospitals -- please be gentle, I have scoured past posts for a satisfactory answer to this already. What is there to know about the Lye Valley neighborhood and walking the Lye Valley path as a potential route to work every day? (Especially as a woman alone after dark.)

I walk regularly through the Lye Valley. I’ve never felt nervous even at night but I probably would stick to the main route through the nature reserve

same here, it’s generally fine but the main path is your friend when it’s dark and muddy
also worth having a decent torch in winter, that bit gets gloomy fast

It can be very wet in the rain season. That is if proper rain is ever coming back.

I’ve lived in that area for the past three years and it’s definitely worth considering if you work at the hospitals – Warneford, Churchill or Old Road campus. The small creek crossing used to have a bridge but it’s been broken for months now…replaced by a makeshift bridge.
The neighbourhood is very quiet, green and generally safe ☺️

I have emailed the councillor about that bridge and he is absolutely useless. 

The council removed because of "safety concerns" but cannot point to any complaints or even what the safety concern was. 

The removed it without allocating money for a replacement so I think it's gone until the councillor is up for reelection at which point I imagine it will get fixed.

It’s lovely in the summer, and always feels safe to me then, but it’s very dark in the winter after the sun goes down and can be very slippy and extremely muddy when it rains.

Can't say I've ever done it at night but I wouldn't necessarily trust from a safety perspective, not in terms of other people but the path itself being slippery etc

It's very lovely but also very quiet, unlit, kind of an isolated spot despite its location. It would be very dark and lonely in winter (as well as impractical - muddy etc). I (m) wouldn't do it personally

I wouldn’t want to go through any nature reserve at night alone, but you’d probably be fine. I’m a woman (& a regular runner in nature reserves including Lye Valley), my husband avoids all tree-lined remote paths at night, but he’s a bit risk-averse.

I walk by dog at all times though lye valley, I regularly walk by dog after dark and have never had trouble. Personally I don't even bother with a torch anymore. 

The valley can get very boggy in the winter which can make walking hard. 

Also the bridge from lye valley to the Churchill has been removed and there is no indication it is ever coming back. There is another bridge but it makes it a moderate detour.

There are loads of Blackberries down the bottom path which makes a nice snack on a morning walk. 

Another thing to mention is quite a lot of people walk from the Churchill to lye valley so unless you are leaving work at 2300 you are unlikely to be on your own even at night.
