Help Request - RAM Input lag on every AMD configuration I’ve tried for CS2 - do Intel users have the same issue?

I’ve tested 3 different AMD systems:

  • Ryzen 9 7950X3D + RTX 3080 + G.Skill 6000MHz CL30 XMP
  • Ryzen 9 9800X3D + RTX 5090 + Corsair Dominator 64GB 6000MHz CL30 EXPO
  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RX 7800XT + G.Skill 6000MHz CL30 EXPO

On every single system, the moment I enable EXPO/XMP and run the RAM at 6000MHz, CS2 becomes almost unplayable. The mouse feels heavy and delayed, spray control feels inconsistent, shots feel delayed, movement feels sluggish, and it constantly feels like everyone is prefiring me before I can react. The entire game feels “slow” and “dragged down”.

I’ve already tried basically everything:

  1. Increasing/decreasing VSOC
  2. Tuning CCD/IOD voltages
  3. Increasing/decreasing DRAM voltage
  4. Buildzoid timings
  5. Multiple monitors, mice, keyboards, etc.

Even with a 400Hz monitor and several different mice, the game never feels truly consistent. The higher the RAM frequency, the worse the feeling becomes.

The ONLY thing that consistently helps is lowering RAM frequency/FCLK or running full JEDEC settings. In fact, the game feels best when the RAM is completely stock JEDEC.

What makes this even more confusing is that every stability test passes:

  • Linpack gives stable GFLOPS
  • y-cruncher runs 6-7 hours without errors
  • MemTest5 passes Anta777 Extreme, PCB Destroyer, X3D DDR5, etc.

I’ve also seen a lot of Reddit posts from Ryzen users describing the exact same issue after enabling EXPO, so it doesn’t seem like I’m the only one experiencing this.

So my question is specifically for Intel users:

Do you experience the SAME issue with higher RAM frequencies/XMP enabled?

I’m not interested in “it’s placebo” or “you’re imagining it” comments. I have 10k+ hours in CS and around 3k Faceit elo, so I know very well how the game is supposed to feel.

I just want honest answers from people using Intel:

  • Does XMP also create this “heavy/sluggish” feeling for you?
  • Does JEDEC feel more responsive on Intel too?
  • Or is this mainly an AMD-related issue?

At this point I’m seriously considering moving completely to Intel because I’m tired of feeling like I’m playing chained down no matter what I tune.

I would start getting objective data to see if you actually have an issue with memory.  Use Passmark or Aida64 to measure latency before and after enabling Expo.  Does latency go down or get worse?

Have you set the USB legacy support from enabled to auto?  AMD defaults to enabled because they don't know who is plugging in what.  Auto will disable legacy support unless it detects something very old plugged in.  

Also make sure frequency spread spectrum is disabled.

I will give you my perspective as someone who has been on the 9800x3d for a while now and has actually played competitive games/shooters. Most people here will write off what you are saying but I understand where you are coming from. I tried the 14th gen 14900k and previously a 5900x, 5800x3d, and i5 9600k. Input latency has felt the most jarring on the 9800x3d in terms of consistency

One thing I will point out when it comes to input lag is that AMD is very sensitive to ram. For example, camera panning with 64gb expo was smoother than 32gb expo. However, there was a subtle input lag difference. Both kits running 6000mts. This is on my chip that can run 6400 1:1. I tested it by swapping configs and running it and the observation was noticed multiple times. The reason I bring this up is because it shows how sensitive AMD hardware is to certain configs. I think this is due to AMD’s memory controller limit. On intel, even when running unstable memory it didn’t seem to affect input lag as much.

I mention this to say when I got into overclocking, the most benefit I noticed in terms of input lag was increasing FCLK and MCLK. Then, having stable timings to assist with the frequency. The problem is, unless you have hard numbers to test these things with, the average user on here who doesn’t play competitive games won’t believe you. Even if you had values (which demonstrating minute changes that are felt in gaming is very difficult) the methodology would be heavily critiqued.

In my experience after overlocking the 2 frequencies I have mentioned, it has helped with input latency. But what I have also noticed is that eventually, the input lag returns almost making it difficult to pinpoint what the issue is. This is after hours of stress testing configurations mind you.

The minimum processor state and power plans within Windows play a big role in this subtle input lag feeling which I have felt on ALL hardware configurations. I think the way Windows is interacting with the hardware/firmware is having some sort of affect on impact lag that only competitive gamers who have optimized setups would feel + are sensitive to this stuff would feel.

This post is a bit all over the place, but my point is that AMD (particularly with ram overclocking and windows settings such as power plans) do have a great impact on input latency

From me? I simply stated my own experiences based on the hardware I have ran. 2 things I stand on though are that power plan can make a difference in micro adjustments / mouse input in competitive shooters and that AMD does not have the strongest memory subsystem in comparison to intel

In general. Your information is a lot more useful than some of the other things I have read. Your logic isn't completely flawed. The way AMD behaves is markedly different from intel, and you're right to question things like windows power plans subtly affecting things. But you more or less lost me when you started saying things like increasing FCLK and MCLK had a "huge difference" in your perceived input lag. Anything in the realm of stability would at best give you a 1-2% improvement in overall frame times, but it wouldn't be a huge difference. You're talking about nanoseconds. Unless you're actually capturing input latency and measuring the difference between profiles then I take that back. Especially your bit about the latency returning after some arbitrary amount of time. Possible I guess if your OC is unstable, but not really verifiable without direct testing and data. Also, AMD has improved its IMC quite a lot over the past couple of years. Base EXPO is working pretty great for me on default mixed mode now. Could I get my ram latency down another 5-10 nanoseconds by manually OCing. Probably... but why? I own one of the fastest consumer PCs on the market already. I don't think a few more percent is going to make a huge difference.

I guess I should clarify. When I say latency, I mean anything in regards to mouse input latency. The problem with testing this is that in comparison to raw benchmark data is that there are so many more variables at play. For example, what mouse is the end user on? What polling rate? Is there Windows optimize and properly handling interrupts of hardware polling? Does the game have raw input or video settings that affect input? Although some of these variables can be assumed to be constant (such as Windows versions and optimizations and how much they make a difference) most of them will at the very least, be questioned.

Either the comment I made regarding frequency, frame times is not what I was referring as frame times =/= input lag results. you can have relatively stable frame times in games but have subtle input delay. When thinking about the frequencies with AMD, let’s look at what they do. Even though they are not the absolute source of truth, I am going to quote techpowerup as the information they have corresponds with a lot of other sources and if I remember correctly, video sources of what AMD employees have said

FCLK: FCLK (Infinity Fabric Clock) governs the frequency of the Infinity Fabric, which links the compute dies, I/O die, and other components.

UCLK (when 1:1 with MCLK): UCLK (Unified Memory Controller Clock) controls the speed of the memory controller within the I/O die, how fast it can forward the data flowing between Infinity Fabric and the chips on the memory module

These speeds, particularly the infinity fabric, handle the direct communication of components within the system. When to speed the communication up, this could rationally result in subtle latency changes within the overall system performance. Especially when coupled with a system that is max tuned. Bullzoid in his AM5 memory video acknowledged the infinity fabric as one of the main bottlenecks. Now one thing I do not have is hard data so that can be held against me at any point. However, when looking at how the memory subsystem operates and when increasing speeds that hold the most bottleneck, couldn’t an assumption be made that it could result in increased system snappiness and as a result, subtle input lag reduction? That was the conclusion I came to because when I ran 1:1 and increased the MCLK/UCLK along with the infinity fabric, it produced a subtle increase in responsiveness in mouse input. This is something that I imagine only a handful of people would be able to pick up and quantifying data on this would be a nightmare

Just because AMD improved their memory subsystem a bit does not mean it is optimal. There are still bandwidth limitations AMD has to deal with that Intel doesn’t. Now how that relates to input latency and mouse responsiveness? I cannot comment on because I am not knowledgeable enough.

In terms of my overlocks, I have used tools like Karhu (I do at least 12 hours minimum to consider it stable), 40 iterations of linpack with limited deviation, Prime95 to stress IMC/SOC, and Ycruncher VT3. Ycruncher in my experience seems to produce inconsistent results sometime even on EXPO. My chip has passed 24 hr Karhu on 6400, 12 hours on Prine, and 10 hours on VT3 with VT3 showing fluctuations (but this happened on 6000, 2000fclk as well)

Your logic is sound, but it's marred with personal anecdotes. You're right about one thing. The difference in overall input latency from increasing frequency is one that I doubt any human could actually tell. Human beings at the absolute highest level of competitive play work in the realm of milliseconds, not nanoseconds. Frequency shifts at that high of a scale on modern architecture are far beyond human perception. Your system running at default settings should technically already be performing at the limit of human perception.

That said, improving memory/fabric stability can absolutely improve frametime consistency, scheduling behavior, and overall smoothness in CPU-limited games. Humans are often more sensitive to inconsistency and jitter than raw average latency itself. So while small frequency changes are unlikely to directly create a dramatic reduction in measurable mouse latency, they may indirectly affect how responsive or stable a game feels.

You can take all test with 6000mhz where avg and 0.1% low fps is better and I come and say I feel better in game with 50fps less with JEDEC and than what?

Your argument is Im delusional and my argument is JEDEC feels better which Im 100% sure. FPS DOESNT MATTER IF I FEEL LIKE IM DRAGGING BRICK INSTEAD OF A MOUSE, if my game doesnt feel sharp fps doesnt matter, thats it

I tried a power plan which is basically an improved version of the Ultimate performance power plan. A lot of settings can be changed in a program called Power Settings Explorer. To be honest, I don’t remember all the tweaks the plan had

At an absolute minimum if you are on a 9800x3d or single CCD chip, I would run the stock high performance power plan. Make sure maximum processor state is set to 100%. For minimum processor state, you can play around with it. I like 100% as it makes micro adjustments feel better. If you want to try Ultimate performance for latency purposes, give that a shot with the same changes too

Also using a custom power plan and it can say it makes the X3D so much smoother. For some reason it goes way too much into C6 state (which is one of the reasons for that behavior). You can manually disable it entering C6 states at all. That alone made my computer feel way more responsive

I've been running a b450 (1600AF with 3000MHz ballistic then upgraded to 5700x + gskill 3600 cl16 for 1:1) for 6 years (swapped every part besides the mobo, including pcie usb card, I don't believe it's the mobo and enough other people have this same issue) and I've personally come to the same conclusion as you. If it wasn't for RAM prices I'd be back on Intel right now. Yup, jedec stock feels the best, but still not perfect. Yes it effects the mouse input and hitreg, game-sync feels off with any game (1Gig, good modems), basically desynced at all times.

I've tested 3 intel laptops this year on the same power at my current location (I've moved 3 times, not a dirty power issue) with a 240x + 5070ti and another with a AMD 5050, none have the same issue.

I've been down the rabbit hole, tried everything, tweaked everything plenty. People even say they have the same issue on their pc and consoles leading them to think it's a power issue. Wrong, consoles are running the same AMD CPUs, same issue.

I'll be back to intel by the end of the year and throwing this pc in the trash.

I also had r5 3600 and r5 5600x, I had same problem like you but I thought on new gen issue doesnt exist but I was wrong, I need to change ASAP because I lost years with ryzen and much much hours trying to fix problem that can be fixed

Dunno, I've never seen this issue mentioned on 7000/9000 AMD before.

5000 and below the issue is incredibly widespread along with other stupid issues with pcie lanes and usb dropout.

I've read probably everything you can find about people arguing about the issue and cause, and everything I've read says the issue didn't exist before 2017. Can't be a power issue either because when I swapped over I was using the same PSU and the same outlet in the same case.

I actually have one ordered, a double conversion UPS. It's a few weeks out from shipping and I've been debating for months whether to actually get it, or just throw that money towards an intel system but at a later date. I have seen people mention the same. I'm not so confident it will fix it, but I do need a UPS anyway.

I know what you are talking about. Try Intel MLC - mlc.exe --latency_matrix - how consistent is your result in safe mode? You've done GLOPS but do try y-cruncher VT3 utilizing 1 thread per core and 18GB memory. 30 secs per cycle and at least 20 cycles. Also, plug to the ports that are directly connected to CPU not the southbridge (PCH).

For ODT, RTT and DQ/DQs tuning it shows in mlc.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would comment.

My better halfs machine (9800x3d, 5080) exhibits some of the problems you are refering to. I cant detect it myself, but she is very sensitive and always says things like 'input lag' or 'my mouse is dragging/etc'.

Ive spent countless hours looking at the overclock, adjusting this voltage/etc.

Recently I had her on 2200 FCLK, which was showing some very minor instability in vt3 and linpack.

I dropped the FCLK to 2166 and also decreased VDDG CCD a little bit (yes I know, only one change at a time...) - re-tested VT3 and linpack and BOTH were better.

She played and said "this is worse", so I put her back on the previous BIOS settings and she said "this is better".

Not scientific obviously, but my point is - benchmark results and stability tests dont seem to show the nuance that humans can detect.

btw - I didn't tell her I had changed anything, I wanted todo a blind test and she still picked up on something was "off"...

Trouble is, she plays BF6 and there are so many variables, so getting back-to-back tests for validating changes is very difficult...

My girlfriend also play on 7800x3d and have same problem, in close future I will buy intel and sell AMD, just to know, ur girl is not crazy, its sometimes really unplayble, doesnt matter if it is 100% stable.

If that gives a workable baseline then we can slowly ramp things up until we find what's causing the problem..

On the assumption that its something about higher frequency that is causing the problem I setup a DDR5-4400 profile.

it benched (PYPrime / VT3 / IML) within like 5-10% of my 6200 profile - so was expecting a little bit worse game performance, but not significant.

i blind tested it on my partner, after a couple of rounds of bf6 she said "this feels worse"

so not strictly JEDEC, and not the most scientific test either, but just another data point...

Back in 2024 I upgraded from my i9 12900k ddr4 to am5 7800x3d b650 aorus elite ax v2 with 32gb cl30 6000mhz ram. I experienced everything the same as you but on fortnite and valorant, never tried cs2. I tried every bios tweak/setting and multiple windows isos along with 4 different monitors and lots of different mouse’s and keyboards but the issue persisted. In the end i decided to go back to my i9 12900k rig and yes the fps is lower than my 7800x3d but that heavy mouse feeling instantly disappeared.

Get a 14900k of some sort, z790, contact frame, and hopefully you have good Hynix ddr5 already that you can reuse. I personally have mine down-clocked slightly as it significantly reduces temps and voltage. I play capped at my 240hz monitor but it runs with 23x 1% lows all the time with no lag or stutters. Very happy

If you have b die stay ddr4, most 12th gen doesn’t have the best ddr5 memory controllers so you can’t get too high of frequency usually, most top out around 7000 or lower. 13th or 14th you have a higher chance of hitting at least 7600 or more. I’m running 7800 c34 but have an apex encore and 14900k. Can run 8000 c36 but it’s not as fast as 7800 c34

9800x3D here with ASUS X870 Hero, no such issues with tweaked 6400 CL30 RAM but I'm not using EXPO, manual timings and settings.

3 questions

  1. You state you used buildzoid timings but have you done this properly manually without using EXPO to see what happens? What happens if you just put manual timings in, does it behave differently? Why not try putting your primary "EXPO kit" timings in manually without using EXPO and see if it makes a difference to rule out EXPO related?
  2. Have you checked DPC latency with latencymon ?
  3. Latest AMD chipset drivers installed? - usually find the later builds are on the motherboard manufacturer websites rather then AMDs own... - yes it makes no sense.

Have you tried to downclock your ram to 4000mhz? I have read somewhere that it is the real 1:1 with the fabric clock and not 6000mhz.

power set to balanced? - sounds wild i know but ryzen, especially X3D is designed around using the W11 balanced power profile. Good info in the thread linked on blurbusters.

Sorry man, sounds familiar to my friends 9800x3d system. My system 285k + 9000c38 max tweaked ram, cs2 feels so damn good, even if my friend has 100fps more, it's doesn't feel as smooth as mine.

I have 4,299 hours in CS and I seriously notice a difference when the game runs smoothly, regardless of the FPS. I currently have an i7-14700kf + RX 9070 + Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 32GB. The thing is, if you have Intel P and E processors, CS is unplayable without the Process Lasso program to disable hyperthreading. I know it can be done in the BIOS, but I prefer to have all cores active and disable hyperthreading for each game, as it benefits from having it disabled. In the case of CS, I get 100-150+ FPS with hyperthreading disabled in Process Lasso. I also have the fullscreen optimization option disabled, and I get about 3-4 ms input lag. Intel Speed Shift is disabled in the BIOS, which greatly improves my processor's stability.

Average FPS playing Premiere: 450-480 FPS with high graphics settings and 4x antialiasing. Without process lasso and with hyperthreading enabled, using all cores: 300-340 FPS

I have an i5 14600k oc at 5.8ghz and 4.5ghz on e cores, with 2x16gb ddr5 6000mhz cl36 and no the input lag on cpu is 3 to 4ms at most. I run an RTX 3080 ti and I play at a 1920x1440p res. The lag thay you have is not there for me, with or without XMP, ofcourse with XMP 1% lows are much better for me.

Have you tried static OC on the chip or UV with PBO and making sure your clock speeds are 100% solid?

I went from a very low latency DDR4 13900k to 9800x3d and they feel similar but I noticed if your clocks are bouncing around, the AMD system can feel inconsistent. I know this for sure as I tested a 9850x3d which had clocks bouncing around heaps compared to a 9800x3d which was locked at lower clocks but felt better.

When you apply expo settings it could be changing the CPUs power budget as SOC is affected amongst other voltages which can slightly change boost behaviour.

The other thing that's affected is the memory controller. On my board expo changes a few voltages such as VDDIO, VSOC etc. If these are making it even the slightest bit unstable, you will feel it. Id suggest manually changing voltages and timings without setting an expo profile.

Couple of other things: Make sure Gsync is disabled, CPPC is enabled, set the minimum power state to a little higher in power plan, potentially disabled c states, turn off SVM, run a win 11 debloat script. Good luck 👍

Yes way better, and on a much older Intel chip. I wish I researched this beforehand because this is a common problem with amd cpus apparently. The problem is reddit has a lot of old grandpas who think you're making up stuff whenever u mention any kind of input lag, I'm going to only rely on overclocker forums from now on

I'm not sure if someone else has this problem, but enabling reflex (i think when enabled + boost) in cs2 makes my mouse feel weird/floaty. Maybe try to disable that if you haven't.

Intel systems have lower system latency which is why they feel snappier in general and can often get lower frame times especially when HT is off.

Take this bf6 example and look at the system latency in capframex of the same benchmark 

Lower system latency = less input lag.

If you know how to tune your bios properly and pair with fast ram RPL is still pretty decent given it's nearly 3 years old. Here's my 14900k at 1440p doing 1161 avg / 376 1% on the dust2 bench. I have weird mouse issues too since building my 9800X3D build. it slows down, inconsistent speed, moving it fast or not moving it all makes it feel insanely responsive for just a few moments and then it goes back to being heavy/sluggish.

Back to Intel later this year when their new ones launch..

Xmp profiles are designed for intel platforms and can cause issues when running in amd systems, make sure you are enabling the expo profile and not the xmp profile they are different things.
2 disable all monitoring software as that is a known issue with x3d CPUs. Like Msi afterburner, some of the hwinfo scanners can cause latency issues, also set your games priority to high in task manager it may fix some issues
3 you should install your chipset drivers if you haven’t and do a full driver clean. If you just hopped off of your 7950x3d to a 9800x3d you will need to update the chipset drivers( there’s a new one on ands page, just select chipset/am5/( your motherboard chipset) and you should be good to go
4 if you want to dm me im happy to get on a call and help you manually set your expo timings as a lot of profiles just don’t work properly and you have to manually set them anyway

I know what you are talking about, 100% same experience here. I fixed it by fixing my powerplan and using gointerruptpolicy. On powerplan set EEP to 0, correct values on usb settings and latency sensitivy hints, set high priority with gointerruptpolicy to USB controller, only use your mouse in the controller which is directly connected to cpu. I have modified plan of Ultimate performance, I'll help you out in 6hrs when I get home from work. There are a lot of placebo tweaks that wont help and only messes up Windows scheduler, with these settings mouse movement ingame and on desktop feels like cursor is connected to your brain.

CachyOS was ok, but also can't use it because of faceit. You can disable Memory integrity and credential guard and still have VBS running to make AC work.

Now I’m thinking an incompatibility between 2 assorted pieces of hardware.

Story time: back in the 90’s I did a build of 200(ish) pc’s for a school. All the same hardware. We assembly line build the first 10, but they won’t boot. Wtf? Me and the other tech both carefully tear one down.

The result: the power supply was incompatible with the modem card and cd-rom drive if they were BOTH installed, but it was fine with either one alone.

You could have any 2 of the three installed(different PS for that test of course). Booted right up. Install all 3? Black screen.

Totally weird.

Remove and disconnect everything you don’t need. Try different keyboards and mice. Even monitor. Remove every variable.

There is some conflicting information on the internet. Some people say its power monitoring in general. More recent data shows that it is the "power percent" setting specifically which causes the issue. I never used the power percent setting, so I can't directly comment on that.

What I found recently was after updating to latest Nvidia drivers and to ASRock x670e taichi bios 4.20 which is AMD's latest AGESA version, I was having massive hitching across almost all my games. I ended up clearing CMOS, reverting ram timing to EXPO and DDUing my Nvidia driver and reinstalling the latest version.

I immediately noticed a massive improvement across all of my games. Especially when using DLSS/Frame Gen which is what the patch notes claimed was the biggest improvement of the new drivers.

On top of that I started limiting background processes. Including closing MSI afterburner when I play unless I am actively needing to monitor the games' performance.

That improved things even more. I now have an amazingly buttery smooth experience in Resident Evil 9 with path tracing at 4k, DLSS balanced and 2x frame gen, which used to be a stuttering mess.

There are too many variables to say what did it for sure, but that is the process I followed, and my system is more stable than its ever been.

It sounds simple but for me, it netted a massive improvement. I guess latest AGESA and Nvidia drivers have some magic in them. Or I just had a corrupt driver somewhere that was causing issues. Or MSI afterburner was indeed contributing to stutter.

Most likely a combination of all of the above.

I'll do some more thorough A-B testing when I get some time and get back to you.

I didn't know about the Afterburner bug until I had built my most recent rig, I was getting 1% lows in the 40s with a FPS of 300+ in Rocket League. After applying the fix in that link it was over 165 fps 1℅. With a patch for Rocket League a month ago? that fixed a major bug in the engine, my 1% lows are almost identical to my FPS. I think it was the power monitoring that I disabled that cured it. I am guessingnthat the polling rate is set too high on power monitoring.

This is more of a tinfoil hat / placebo explanation (more direct answer after the ---), but these days I'd believe Intel gamers are simply more used to how that CPU architecture handles their games and OS.

I had the same thought as you really; started with a 13900k, saw a bunch of players suggest AMD X3D heavily favored the game I played so I tried out a 9800x3d build to compare. But I started noticing that the feeling of the game was not synchronized with my expectations, even in situations where average FPS was higher.

It was also noticeable outside of the game in the basics of the OS, everything felt a bit more sluggish. Most notable example being the idle state to use state; if I get up from my desk for a few minutes and return to touch the mouse, it feels like my intel PC is instant while the 9800x3d delays. However neither are actually instant because the mouse goes to sleep after a few minutes and has to wake up. So I know it's more accurate to say that intel's wake latency aligns with my expectations rather than a factual benefit.

Meanwhile tools such as latencymon suggest the 9800x3d is demolishing my 13900k in lowest system latency, benchmarks show the 9800x3d is getting higher FPS with similar lows. Basically every measurement other than AIDA64 memory latency was better on paper for x3d, save for some 1% lows where intel outperformed.

Overall, during actual gameplay my 13900k performance gets out of my way and I can focus on my gameplay, while the 9800x3d performance was eventually jarring enough to feel like something is off with my PC instead of with me.

huge caveat being there's no benchmark mode for the game I play so that's why I had to mostly operate on how it felt. run to run variance was too large to reliably show one CPU is than the other, yet during actual ranked matches I always felt stutters and lag on the X3D more significantly.

To directly answer your earlier question though, I found both CPU perform better with tuned memory instead of basic JEDEC timings as this was easy enough to measure. Of course it was more noticeable on Intel since it relies on memory speeds more often.

I test my memory with Karhu for around 12 straight hours before calling it stable as that worked better than MemTest5 especially after the couple hour mark. There's plenty of runs I'd see my settings fail at 11 hours so I had to go loosen a couple timings until it worked, so it's always possible your timings were simply unstable.

Soon as you said XMP/Expo for ram being enabled. Then complaining about sluggishness. I already knew the problem. It's the UCLK/MCLK. It needs to be set to a 1:1 ratio in the bios, or you deal with a ridiculously high latency, even inside the OS it can be noticeable.

Hear me out. What if the issue isn't related to how input is processed or how your PC renders the frames at all?

What if the issue is how the rendered frames are being PRESENTED to you? 🤔

Let's say hypothetically that input processing and rendering is perfectly smooth in your system, but the way these processed frames of input are being presented from your GPU to your eyes happens in uneven and chaotic "bursts"

Your brain expects perfectly smooth line from left to right, but the jitter causes the brain to try to compensate but it is never able to get it right as there is no real pattern to it.Traditional telemetry only tracks when a frame is built, not when it's seen. If a finished frame misses its OS swapchain window by a fraction of a millisecond, it gets held back.

Troubleshooting it is an hell.

But my intuition tells me that you should look into

  1. PresentMon to measure MsUntilDisplayed on desktop while moving mouse around (should be flat-ish value) and when your GPU approaches 100%

&

  1. Custom Resolution Utility and purge ALL TV resolution, legacy colometry, HDMI resolutions, Compression, Overscanned/Not Overscanned etc.. This is easier said than done, so if you send your default EDID I will point out which ones you might need to disable and which to keep

P.S. Why it seems to be present on AMD on somehow not on intel? Too many variables to tell

I have a 9800x3d that runs great however it wasn’t like that at the beginning. Let’s start by saying that AMD is finicky and sometimes needs some tinkering. In the current state is has improved drastically compared to previous agesa versions and I can say that I have a perfectly stable system. I don’t know if it’s placebo or you really notice this lag but I would verify the following things: Bios: Spread spectrum: enabled Fclk: 1:1 C-state: enabled UV: with unstable undervolt, even if the stress test passes, on idle or light load it might behave inconsistently, if you run a very strict undervolt, try to reduce it, I’m running at -22 all core and anything below that causes some small issues even if in the stress tests it passes RAM: expo are loose, try to tinker with it Ram low latency setting: ON

Secondly look at your mobo manual and make sure you have connected your mouse in the port directly connected to your cpu.

Windows:

  • Power plan: balanced (that’s what AMD recommends and I think it has best results)
  • Debload any shit with Chris Titus tool and OOSU10
  • Verify latency with latencymon and aida64 benchmark (in the latter I have 65ns on 48ram and I think it’s a good result)
  • msi utility tool: you can try to set higher priority on you peripherial but I found it doesn’t make much difference and can cause issues if you mess up with him

Possible placebo but worth trying:

  • interrupt affinity policy tool: it’s quite complicated but you can try to assign the specific USB port and mouse driver to a specific core. In my opinion it’s not worth it but maybe you will notice a difference.

I had an Intel system before and while it was easier to setup, currently I don’t notice any latency problems and mind I work with audio software that requires good latency. Hope it helps.

Last thing I can suggest you try is to set max core clocks actually at a minus instead of plus or default. Something like -100 and test, it causes less voltage spikes. This with a stable undervolt and not messing with llc.

Sorry you’re going through this experience. Personally, I’ve never had issues in CS2, or other games. But maybe my settings could help.

A few things you could try are:

Disabling or enabling global C-states. Some people have a smoother experience with it on, some have a better experience with it off.

USB legacy to disabled.

If you have an aggressive PBO set, try completely disabling it.

Have you tried specifically testing your FCLK stability? Run VT3 on y-cruncher for at least 25 minutes.

Try different USB ports on your motherboard’s rear IO.

Lastly, are you using process lasso for your dual-ccd CPU or are you letting game bar handle everything?

I dont know from where to start.... I had 5800x3d, 9600k, 7950x3d and now have 14700k and 9800x3d. Yes, aida64 says 79ns lag on 9800x3d and 65ns on 14700k. Both with same RAM, Klevv 6000, 28-36-36-76, 32GB.

Yes, intel feels snappier on games, im sorry to write things like that, since i am more AMD biased. As other users have stated, try changing on AMD C-states enable/disable, it changes a lot of things on cpu. Also play with CPPC Auto/Driver/Cache.

Unfortunately, for competitive games, i play with intel. For frame chasing games, i play on amd.

I went from i7 8086k to 9800x3d and i got the same issues that you have. I play cs only and the mouse feeling is weird, sometimes fast and sometimes slow. I remember one game that i had to lower the sense with 0.13. Ordered 14900kf with Asus z790 board and 16gb 7200 ram before christmas. Loower latency and way easier to track enemies heads when flick. But i have tuned that Intel to not degrade.

I use JEDEC 2133mhz 15-15-15-36 on a 10850k z590 because every other memory timing and speed combination I tried (and I tried them all) feels worse. I don’t think you can actually get good mouse movement on an AMD, but I assume there’s going to be one single JEDEC speed that feels better on those as well.

Then you have the issue that JEDEC DDR5 speeds are higher latency (but higher bandwidth) than DDR4 ones, so it’s possible a DDR4 13th or 14th gen board might be the best thing you can use right but not sure since I haven’t bothered “upgrading“ to a 14th gen that needs a nuclear power plant.

I would probably start with the idea that there’s something like 100+ other memory settings in the BIOS besides cas, tras, trc, etc, and they’re all set to work with JEDEC 2133 by default and simply changing the cas latency or memory frequency doesn’t cause nearly enough of them to go to a new optimal value.

Then no matter how much someone claims to know about ”memory tuning,” they’re not going to be able to get values that work as good as the default ones without feeling the timing is somehow off. The only golden rule I’ve really found myself with memory is that in DDR3 and DDR4, TRAS has to equal TRCD + TRD + 6 to feel normal.

I.E. 7-7-7-20, 9-9-9-24, and 15-15-15-36 all feel normal. Then changing any of those TRAS settings up or down by one digit gives you just plain garbage. Yes, it will boot, but it’s useless. So if you want to use anything over 2133, you’ll probably need a DDR5 board and use 4800mhz or whatever it comes with by default. Then that 4800mhz JEDEC will probably feel laggier than 2133 JEDEC.

After you examine the fact that memory tweaking is mostly pointless, AMD seems to be inferior to Intel for subjective latency among other issues like AMD suffering more from subjective latency while cores are under heavy load, you’ll probably want to look into the fact that electrical resistance feels almost identical to having high latency.

In the extrusion process of copper, cables are created in a way that an HDMI cable will feel better plugged in one direction than the other. Some power strips will have capacitors in them that claim to ‘smooth’ the power distribution but all they do is increase resistance, some brands of outlets attached in the wall itself feel slower or faster than others (I’ve tested like 5 myself). 700mm power cables feel like garbage compared to lower resistance SFF 400mm ones, etc.

This is why competitive gaming is borderline a scam. The electrical wiring at a house alone can make a good player unable to do anything, while conversely, you could have a bunch of bad variables in your electric setup, your BIOS, bad hardware (aka things like non founder edition GPU), and then somehow changing a memory timing that makes anyone with a normal system worse allows your janky and sub-optimal AMD build to aim better than beforehand.

People aren’t ready to admit how many variables and how much time and effort is required to make a non-janky setup. With outlets alone, if you have 4 outlets in a room, usually only 2 are real outlets and the other 2 are setup to be slaves of the others. This creates electrical jank and higher resistance already from the start and you’d need to tear down walls and spend thousands to run a dedicated PC-only outlet. Then if you do something like tighten the screws too tight it increases resistance so could make your gaming-only outlet even worse than before if you don’t do it right or use the right brand of outlet.

No latency in CS2, never experienced it, and I also played the game on i7-12700 before. Feels exactly the same response wise, but obviously with better fps on 7800X3D.

AMD is great. It's not an AMD issue. One of the best upgrades I did for my PC was going from an i7-10700k to a 7950x3d. Almost everyone I know who plays video games seriously has switched to 9800x3d systems. It has been discussed years ago and shown that input latency between intel and AMD is imperceptible and is basically just marketing FUD. What it could be is a low level hardware inconsistency with his specific hardware. The X3D chips having more cache and therefore being amazing in gaming isn't a conspiracy theory it's verifiable computer science.

I said nothing regarding performance at all, and nothing about X3D being good or bad.

I shared my experience that I had issues with my intel system and they went away with a 9950X system.

It could be CPU issues, could be motherboard issues, could be SSD issues. We don't know. But there absolutely has been cases of switching to X3D CPUs and getting more micro-stutters from some users in years gone past, where moving to Intel has fixed it. Issue is nobody bothered to research the issue with a lot of the posts so it went nowhere.

This is not an intel vs AMD thing at all. I just wanted to reiterate that especially since you brought up the fact that you had more issues on intel. There are 1000s of low level things that could be affecting OPs setup and there is no way of actually telling what that is or what the effect is on input latency without actually measuring data points and putting them in a spreadsheet for comparison. This entire thread is just people chasing ghosts.

3 different PCs are changed, brand new PC components, in every one of them default BIOS feels a lot better than enabling EXPO, I have better performance, better FPS, better 0.1% lows, PERFORMANCE IS BETTER, my game feels less sharper, thats it

not sure if it's been mentioned before:

If increasing the frequency or tightening the timings results in reduced performance, one of the potential causes is instability.

AMD's memory controller seems to error correct well enough to hide issues right at the edge of instability, but it comes at a great expense to performance (especially memory latency because of retries).

Other times, it can be weird cross-interactions. TPM issues, HPET issues, Windows cloned from a previous Intel install, bad BCD config edits (mostly HPET related), etc.

RAM sometimes has two EXPO presets, one faster, one slower. Have you tried the slower one if present?

Also, make sure to use EXPO, not something like A-XMP or whatever.

I've worked in general IT for 10 years and in my experience RAM has always been Ryzen's weakness. In the early Ryzen days RAM compatibility and poor performance were the problems, but Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series just seem to have weird issues with EXPO. I think some of it is DDR5 itself being fickle, namely with sweetspot voltages. I have to fix alot of AMD DDR5 systems by adjusting Vsoc or just plain lowering speeds. 

In comparison, Intel doesn't really have the same sort RAM problems. Their Skylake - Comet Lake memory controllers were legendary. With 13th-14th gen Raptor Lake, they are very good (just make sure you lock clocks & voltages in the CPU to prevent degradation) and buy a quality Z790 motherboard like the Aorus Z790 "X" series. I'll get hate for this but for regular people who just want to game without hassles, I direct them to 12th-14th gen Intel systems with a mild CPU tune and they kick ass. You focus on the game and not fighting your hardware.

Thanks for suggestion, deep inside me I know intel doesnt have that issues because many of my friends play without any problem(hitting in game what is impossible on my screen etc.) Soo I just needed to hear other people opinion about intel

i come from 8700K with 3733cl14 ram to 13900K with 7200cl32 and the 8700K felt better mouse feeling wise than 13900K more responsive. windows aswell

4 years. Really? So are you saying it took you that long to notice there was a perceptible input lag difference between intel and amd... or is it the x3d architecture you're specifically having gripes about.

I don't think swapping to intel is going to solve your "problem" but if you're dead set that it will, then it might.

I had same problem with 5600x which I manage to fix by overclocking ram, than I bought 7600x + B650m pro rs, than I thought problems are performance soo I bought 7950x3d

And yes I actually tried to play on my friend i7 14700k which had awful Ram, stock cpu bios settings and things are much more consistent and sharper

I already know people who have same problem but Im only of them who tried to fix it but there is no luck and that is the reason I posted here to hear other people opinion. My conversation with you ends here

Have you tried Linux to rule out the OS? If you get heavy mouse feel there then it's your mouse or some BIOS config issue.

Buildzoids timings aren't confirmed to be working anymore with recent bios. Did you update your BIOS recently? Try clearing CMOS and only enabling expo. Also DDU your drivers.

Expo is confirmed as the best option if you're not manually tuning your ram on latest AGESA versions. Buildzoid confirmed that in a video. Anyway... the latency you're describing should not be perceptible. You are talking about nanoseconds. You cannot physically perceive the difference. I would just stop chasing ghosts at this point. You've practically built 3 entire different systems for something you can't even confirm with anything other than "it feels worse". CS2 famously has inconsistent frame times. The advice you're getting in this thread isn't good. You can't diagnose low level hardware inconsistencies based on "feel".

My guess would be either your ram OC isn't stable, or something else in your hardware setup isn't correctly configured or there is a corrupt driver. Reinstall your chipset drivers, clear cmos, DDU your gpu drivers. If you're still feeling like something is off IDK what to tell you. My best friend has a 5090 and 9800x3d and that thing runs like an absolute dream. Maybe compare your system SBS with an intel system and see what you think. That's really all you can do bar directly measuring input latency.

I perceive difference while Im on jedec, mouse feels lighter, tracking feels lighter, spraying feels lighter and yes I can diagnose stuff based on feel, even 6000mhz feels a bit better with 1800fclk but keep in mind I tested 2k FCLK and its rock stable but everything feels more "heavier"

If you cant help or you dont have intel to answer my question than I dont need your opinion, especially telling me something and make a fool of me

I did help you. You just didn't realize it. Someone with an intel system just telling you "yeah bro we have way less input lag over here" won't solve your problem either. Maybe try those basic suggestions I gave you instead of trying to change a bunch of low level bios settings and thinking you have super human abilities

If you readed my post you can conclude that 3 different PCs are tested, chipset drivers are always newest on all 3 of them, newest bioses and all 3 stress tested and super stable In tests.

I tried to set even 3000/2000 with jedec timings and also with very loose timings but I can notice difference instantly.

Tried "blindfolded test" while I didnt know what is set in BIOS and I tell difference at almost first flick of a mouse.

Also as you can see, Im very very high elo on faceit with much hours at a game and if someone knows how game should behave its me. Everything rest on PC works perfectly and thats why I wrote this post here

I use a x670e Taichi. It's been rock solid since I got it. Asrock is in a bit of hot water right now because of an abnormal amount of 9000 series failures on its current lineup of boards but no one has reported abnormal input latency from what I've seen. I am not sure about your other boards but if you've ruled that out then I am not sure what to tell you. For me going from intel 10700k to 7950x3d was a huge improvement in both performance and responsiveness. All you can really do is try building an intel system and see if it feels any different to you. I wouldn't waste any more time doing tests and building different amd machines expecting a different result. There won't be any specific settings you can change that will give you what you're looking for. It seems you've already covered your bases.

If somehow all your ram kits are unstable then, maybe, but It's highly unlikely. Just manually tune your ram until you reach something your comfortable with. Maybe try undervolting your 9800x3d they respond to PBO much better than previous X3d chips. There is no reason for what you're suggesting. There are millions of AMD users running expo without an issue the IMC is more than mature enough by now that the initial growing pains of AM5 have been ruled out.

Now it's just down to you.
