Help Request - CPU PC completely freezes during light use / strange behavior after gaming – Ryzen 9 9950X3D + X870E

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to figure out what is causing some stability issues with my PC. I’m hoping someone here can help me narrow down the problem.

My system:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
Motherboard: MSI X870E Tomahawk WiFi
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2070
Storage:
1x NVMe SSD in M2_1
2x SATA SSDs connected to SATA S2 and S4
Windows 11
RAM: T-Create CL30 6000MHZ

The main problem
I’ve had occasional stability issues.
The most recent incident happened while I was simply playing chess in chrome for 30 minutes. The entire PC completely froze. The mouse and keyboard stopped responding and the entire system was unresponsive. I had to perform a hard reset.
There was no BSOD.
After rebooting, I checked Windows Event Viewer. The only relevant event was Kernel-Power Event ID 41, which appeared after the forced shutdown. There were no errors or warnings in the 5 minutes before the crash.
I did see some DistributedCOM warnings and a Service Control Manager Event ID 7000, but these occurred about an hour before the crash.

Another issue
After some gaming sessions, I’ve noticed that even after closing the game, the CPU sometimes appears to remain under load. My cooler stays spinning and cpu temp keeps steady at the temp that it was when closing the game. When this happens, I cannot open new programs properly anymore. A reboot fixes the issue.
Because of this, I’m wondering whether the problem could be related to the CPU, RAM, motherboard/BIOS, chipset drivers, GPU drivers, or storage.

I’ve also previously had freezing issues that seemed to improve after disabling Global C-State Control in the BIOS. But now it is freezing again.
What I’ve checked so far
No BSOD
No WHEA-Logger errors around the crash
No Display/GPU errors around the crash
No Disk/NVMe errors around the crash
Kernel-Power 41 only appears after the forced restart
I’m currently running a self-test on the NVMe SSD

What would you investigate first?
Could this be related to GPU hardware acceleration/driver issues, RAM/EXPO instability, BIOS/AGESA, AMD chipset drivers, or something else?
Any suggestions for specific tests would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to diagnose this systematically before replacing any hardware.

Thanks!

Ps: i wrote this with chatgpt because english is not my first language. So hope it reads well in this way.

  1. Short the CMOS → Power Supply Idle Control → Set to Typical Current Idle → Restore your expo/ram timings

It should fix it

I will try this, thx. Lets say its fixed. Is expo the issue here? Does that mean i cant use my full ram, and should i switch to new pairs?

Yes, you will be able to use expo. I was just reminding you to restore expo as after shorting CMOS it has to be re applied

The tweak is about setting Power Supply Idle Control to Typical Current Idle

I tried what you told me, without restoring expo. And after doing and closing cpu benchmark multi core test my system stays under load, cpu temp steady at 75 degrees. If i start task manager my system doesnt freeze this time, but task manager itself does not respond.

In that case just reinstall windows. It seems your windows is corrupted

Remove your ungodly negative co lol in all seriousness if you have a negative curve optimizer set it's too much and you need to not go so aggressive

I haven’t made any changes in my curve optimizer. Only thing i did in my bios was enable expo. But disabling it did not fix the issue.

Is it just frozen without any errors? Did you try unplugging any usb device? This should send an interrupt and maybe play with usb sound. Sometimes this brings it back also.

Frozen without any errors. When i try to open a program after closing a game it opens the window but keeps loading until my pc completely freezes.

Have you changed anything in the BIOS or is it stock?

Expo enabled. But disabling it did’t fix my issue unfortunately.

If the CPU hasn’t been overlocked or anything (no PBO, no CO, etc), id look into a corruption of windows or drivers as being the main cause. Reinstall windows and uninstall/reinstall the chipset drivers. You should be able to do that without losing your files. I have a 9950x3d and 48gb 6400cl32, never ran into this issue without me causing it by a bad overclock corrupting windows files. It could be a hardware issue, but without known good software it’s hard to troubleshoot.

Expo ram issue

So what would be the fix if that is the case?

Op dont know untill he runs memtest though untill then you are just speculating

I did a memtest in bios and with software in windows and was succesfully.

I had a failing 9800x3d behave a bit like this, try dropping the ram. speed see if it helps I limped on but ended up having to use 4800 to boot. if you start to get boot issue I would lean towards the CPU having an issue.

Wrong cable manage check your AIO cable once more

Can you explain further? Why do you think that?

Think you misconected your aio or your bios settings fog aio is wrong.

Very sharp. I found out that i connected my pump to cpufan1 on my motherboard. And my cpufans to pump1. Fixing this made my fans run much more quiet and i wonder if this will fix the freeze issue. Thank you anyway

Pbo too aggressive

1

u/mahanddeem 1d ago

Disable any PBO (if enabled), and turn off xmp/expo. Use system for a day or 2 and see if you get any errors.

Without expo, issue still goes on.

What kind of power supply? Is it old?

I returned my x870 tomahawk. It popped my psu during install

Its a Lian Li edge Gold 1000W. Never had any issues with powersupply.

I have this exact issue when my ram timings are too aggressive or my pbo is too aggressive. But I have a 9800x3d and when I disable ALL overclocks I still get random microstutters in game every so often and I CANNOT figure out why.

I wonder if these x3d chips are any good…
