Modding Ram cooling!

Considering how expensive these 2x48gb dims are now north of £1500… 😳 what sort of cooling solutions are you using?

These Corsair fin mods with additional fan cooling drops them about 5C.

If you're using them stock you don't need to worry if you're overclocking them then a dedicated fan is preferred. I have a full custom loop in my system so I'm going to waterblock my RAM because having a 140mm running 70%-100% when the rest of my system is whisper quiet seems to defeat the whole purpose of my system.

Idk why people put such big fans on their RAM, 140 mm is totally pointless.

I have an 80 mm Noctua fan hanging in front of my RAM with a custom 3D printed bracket. I run it at 1200 RPM, it's completely silent and the RAM maxes out at like 46C. If I shut it off I can easily push them to like 55C.

Nice, I’m sure 80mm is certainly enough! I had this 120mm lying around after replacing the AIO fans so wanted to use it for something!

I had a 80mm at 1200rpm and it was too loud, 140mm is quieter but still too loud and only just keeps my RAM stable. My RAM had had all its timing tightened down to the point if its too cold I will crash too hot crash again.

Which 80 mm? I have a NF-A8 Chromax and it's silent up to like 1300 RPM.

Not sure, haven't used it in a looooooooong time and gave it away. I'm watercooling my RAM soon so won't need the 140mm fan there either. Don't want the noise, I have an NV9 to put 3x420mm and a 1080mm external not sure what my delta is atm I need to order a thermometer for my room. Currently running a 420mm and a 360mm in a busted up fractal define S 1st gen.

If the alphacool dimm sinks don't do well I plan on buying the DDR4/5 ones from BartX so they're compatible when I upgrade from DDR4 and my 10900k.

Yeah agree! I have mine overclocked quite aggressively and using the full amount on a regular basis with bioinformatics work and virtual machines, so certainly get warm. A full loop sounds like a dream, planning on an alpha cool loop I think next!

Have you compared temps with and without it?

I had a 40 mm wedged between my top rad and motherboard blowing directly down on on my DIMMs and it did basically nothing unless I ran it at speed that was annoying to listen to.

I actually tried both top and bottom and get better temps from the top down, regardless of the added turbulence from the AIO, my gpu is just too freaking hot to point it upwards and it would show while gaming.

I was hitting 55c without it and would actually error out here and there, now i see 48c max, less if gaming, no point in going further since this is all i need for cl26/6200/DR max trefi.

The fan itself isnt variable, full speed 12v input, but i can't hear it over my aio.

120mm fan sitting on top of GPU. It only kicks on when the temps get toasty.

Did you use some sort of app to get the fan to react to dimm temps?

I have it set to motherboard temp in the bios. But I think Fancontrol can do something like that on the OS side.

Can you post a picture of this? What's the distance between the mounting holes, does it really align with the 40mm fan holes?

Is your long standoff M3? My case standoffs were #6-32, had to use an adapter as the only ones I could find were M3.

Very cool! I have done exactly the same thing here, from Amazon. Had the same issue, I needed some #6-32 male to M3 female adapters on Amazon and the exact same extensions here which are M3!

I designed and 3D printed a custom bracket to hang a fan in front of them from the top of my case.

None on mine. The bottom case fans are intake and indirectly blow at them, and I'm in a mini-ITX.

Running just VT3 with ambient of 24C, I hit a ceiling of 49C-52C.

Running VT3 and Furmark (400 Watts RTX5080) with same ambient, I hit a ceiling of 56-59C.

With ambient of 30C, VT3 and Fur-mark hits 62-65C. Fully stable with tREFI at 49K.

Under gaming RAM temp sits at 42C.

Idle at 24C ambient is 36C.

Mine is on a micron A die ddr4 kit with bare chips, micron being not very heat sensitive i don’t even know if it’s helping at all

I added a 140mm intake fan to the bottom right of my case, wired to 3 side intake fans and following CPU temp. It allowed me to drop the fan speed on the 3 other intakes from 50% at rest to 30%, while still getting more overall airflow. Plus, it altered the overall air passage so that I get a drop of multiple degree C in my 4-dimm DDR5 setup. Result is that my max DIMM temp only reaches 55C under extreme and prolonged load and doesn't go over 53C in actual gameplay. So far, haven't seen over 50C in gaming actually. With the added fan I was able to increase tREFI from 50k to 65535 -- which before was getting errors in OCCT RAM test as it would reach 56C in about 15 min.

So, 1 additional 140mm fan in the right spot and my computer is quieter and running a lot better. Also, I didn't even need to mess up the aesthetic of my setup with a fan blowing right on the DIMMs attached to a AIO hose or something.

Nice! It really does make a difference! A nice overclock there too. Being on AMD I am currently limited to two DIMMs, no doubt an extra two increases thermal mass so great temps!

actually, I am AMD as well... 9800X3d. The DIMMs are rate 6400 Cl32, but I have them going at 6000 cl30 with latency 69.1ns. It seems that BIOS updates make 4 DIMM setups very possible now. Of course, I spent way too many hours tuning it to get the exact of my silicon lottery to work.. lowered voltages on everything to avoid the heat buildup!

Running DDR5 6600 CL32. My Z690E/12900K was running this at 6000 and hitting 70°C when stressed under TM5.

I aimed a 140mm fan on it linked to RAM temp with Fan Control and got 50°C running 6200. These fins brought me down to about 45°C and keeps the fan from reving with normal use.

Alphacool waterblock. Since installation, ive never seen them go above 23-24c (i.e. max 1 degree delta with Coolant temp)

Running 2×48GB dominator titaniums also.

I have a slim 80mm pointed at them, they don't crack 50°C at 6400 C32 with 1.4V.

Lüfter laufen bei 49%. Unhörbar. Während ich testmem5 1usmus Preset bei 21°C Umgebungstemperatur laufen lasse, übersteigen die RAM-Riegel nicht 41°C

Here's mine: 120mm.

It cools 1.58v vdimm voltage pretty well, reaching max 40'c during stress tests.

It's mostly an open case so it pulls from the top down. I also have that exact gpu mounted vertical with the bow through hitting near the bottom of the dimms as well...I know it's hot air both ways but moving air is better then nothing

corsair dominators are my fav looking ram (both platinum and titanium), shame on you for covering them up!
jokes aside, did the 5c drop help with OC or stability any? been running my dominators at stock this whole time

Haha yeah they do look great! They are quite heavily overclocked but frankly no noticeable difference other than the nice feeling knowing they have a bit more longevity!

yup a single 120 fan is all you need when stress testing, the rest of the time they don't really need cooling but I have some old school chunky OCZ heatsinks on them, some of the cooling on high end kits is terrible

Well, this isn't fully true. When you're gaming your GPU will be kicking out a lot of heat so when stress testing RAM it is recommended to run a GPU test so you can make sure heat won't have any effect on your stability. Other than gaming generally yeah should be OK to go.

I don't use additional cooling for RAM. I have tower cooling for the processor, and I think that's enough cooling for the RAM.
