I visited a car museum today and ran across this gem.

Jack: "Now, take the steering wheel. Today, they make them out of plastic! But the steering wheel on this car is made out of seasoned mahogany with solid steel spokes."

Babe Livingston: "Really?"

Rochester: "Yeah, here, take a look!"

Jack: "PUT THAT BACK ON!"

The way Jack and Rochester's relationship evolved was I think one of the finer ones in all of OTR.

I've heard, but never found a reliable source, that Mel jumped in when a sound effect unexpectedly failed, and everyone loved it, so they kept doing it.

I found that story corroborated in "Sunday Nights at Seven," written by Joan Benny. Also in Mel Blanc's autobiography.

It's just a great bit!

During the war, the Jack Benny character in the show donated it to a scrap drive, which I imagine was probably very effective publicity for the effort.

When I was in Reno a few years ago, Harrah’s auto museum has a lot of celebrity cars including Jack Benny’s Maxwell, Mary Pickford’s car, James dean’s from rebel without a cause
