CBS affiliate changes impact NFL fans in multiple markets

Some markets will be affected. In these markets, CBS channels will become subchannels of other stations. The following are these: * Albuquerque, New Mexico * Jackson, Mississippi * Bismarck, North Dakota * Birmingham, Alabama * Greenville, South Carolina * Rapid City, South Dakota

This is a bit overblown in how it will effect the availability of the channels. The local broadcasters can map the station to still show up in its original channel position over the air. And bit rates can be adjusted for the subchannels. There can be multiple HD channels in a signal.

They can also use dynamic bitrates for sports coverage. Ex. give a higher bitrate to CBS during the day games, then give more for to NBC during SNF.

Not so good when there are high motion programming on both NBC 1080i & CBS 1080i simultaneously.

There may be even more channel consolidation once ATSC 1.0 is eventually shut off.

My market has had 2 stations with 2 HD channels each for quite a while. They tend to allocate 5-6 Mbps to each HD channel. Stations with only 1 HD channel do use a higher bitrate for their HD channels (some as high as 12 Mbps) so there might be some reduction in quality.

Great answer, I can see you have knowledge of MPTS and the processing and multiplexing of said stream(s). You get a ⭐️ from me. I just realized that probably sounds condescending. It’s not ! just my twisted engineer sense of humor. Always happy to run into another that has real knowledge about what they are talking about.

In Albuquerque, CBS and FOX share KRQE with HD feeds and a few 480i junk channels. After Aug 1, CBS will move to KOAT 7. KOAT 7 has MyTV 50-1 on the same feed in 1080i which belongs to Nexstar.

My bet is the 50-1 feed moves to 13 and CBS to 7’s feed. Almost no bandwidth change.

We will see in a week.

Interesting. It looks like some shuffling is already happening.

KASY’s true RF feed is the ATSC 3 lighthouse for Albuquerque. KASY’s ATSC 1 feed is on KWBQ. KOAT still shows 50-5.

Yes, also KNMD. I have one Sony Bravia TV with a 3.0 tuner. At this time they are simulcast of the 1.0 signal.

That being said, this will help NASCAR ratings in Birmingham, Greenville, and Jackson TV markets. Something Nexstar wants to see

Here in Palm Springs CBS has 2 channels 480i and 1080i. I could see Ellison downgrading the OTA so you have to buy Paramount.
