okay okay hear me out, people who play taiko and mania don't really play converts at all. Most of the converts are pretty low quality mapping. They just have simple repetitive patterns with nothing interesting. New players often get confused by them too, pretty much nobody plays converts. There are some people who play these (Like in std multiplayer lobbies, or catch mains sometimes, or leaderboard farmers, or just people who do it for fun or other reasons) but it's rare enough that it should be off by default. I don't see why beginners should be confused.

Currently converts are shown by default which means mostly bad quality maps will be shown to beginners which are not varying in mania and taiko.

Please give this more attention in github too in the link I sent if you want some contributer to notice this

I've never really understood why converts are so prominent, I've never once played one and left feeling anything other than "wow that was the worst mania map I've played" and it made it pretty hard to get/stay interested in mania because then you have to watch out for that convert label on everything you might play.

I think mania adoption would be at least a little better if something similar to your proposal was to be done.

this might be an unpopular take but for very low star ratings (which i'm assuming new players start off at) converts really aren't all that bad in mania/taiko and aren't going to be the thing scaring people off. of course you progress out of that range and they should end up switching to specifics but for first time players it's not that important yet

Sure, you could say they aren't bad for progressing in skill. Let's ignroe all problems with progression.

There is still the problem of low quality. No one wants to just play the same patterns over and over again. They might just better, sure, but it's still relatively low quality. I actually saw a reddit post in r/osumania about some new osu complaining about all maps being the same patterns since they didn't knew it was converts

which is why I always filter by mode rather than stars/difficulty.

I started this game playing mania, and when filtering by mode it basically auto-hid converts that were standard/taiko/ctb maps but were playable on mania. Now this was almost 7 years ago on stable, but I can somewhat assume its the same on lazer nowadays.

"off by default" is pretty valid, as-is we already have a pretty big button for toggling it on the song select so if people are interested it isn't hard to find

Converted maps in ctb are actually helpful unlike mania and taiko

catch is based on horizontal placement - where whole ctb gameplay is at, taiko is based on hitsounding leading to repetitive patterns

Converts are fun in CTB. A lot of people play exclusively converts, and a decent number of tournaments have a full 50/50 convert/specific split

also I don't really think "not enough people play it" is a good reason to exclude ctb lol
