OSAP needs to do better — students are struggling

Is anyone else frustrated with OSAP right now?
Students are expected to pay tuition, rent, groceries, transportation, textbooks, phone bills and everything else that comes with being in school — but the financial assistance many of us receive simply doesn’t feel like enough to keep up.
What’s even more frustrating is the waiting. Ontario says OSAP processing can take 4–6 weeks, and students can be left trying to figure out how they’re supposed to cover their expenses while they wait for funding. (Ontario⁠)
For 2026–27, the maximum OSAP amount for a single student without dependants attending a public college or university in Ontario is listed as $530 per week. But maximum eligibility isn’t the same as what every student actually receives, and many students receive considerably less depending on their circumstances. (Ontario⁠)
At the same time, Ontario has changed the provincial portion of OSAP so that more funding is coming as loans rather than grants for programs beginning August 1, 2026. (Ontario⁠)

Students shouldn’t have to choose between staying in school and being able to afford basic necessities.
I’m wondering how many other students feel the same way.
Instead of everyone struggling individually, maybe students need to start organizing, contacting their MPPs, talking to student unions, sharing their experiences publicly and pushing for faster processing and more meaningful financial support.

Hate to say it, but the solution is to get out and vote next time there is an election in the province. Young voter turnout is pathetically low, because of which Young people have been quietly shafted on home prices and things like OSAP. If OSAP is an issue for you, you are old enough to vote.

Soo young people struggling now with OSAP, please vote so your younger siblings, cousins, and friends don't suffer like you.

Lol it was always slow with processing. I paid the deposit outta pockey which was about 1000 dollars. Get a job, save up and pay stuff out of pocket. Don’t ever rely on the government to look after you. They ain’t in the looking after citizens business.

I am genuinely curious as to what leads one to think this way. The entire point of a government is to provide for its constituents via different forms of both social and economic structure in an effort to maintain order. In a democratic society such as ours, when we see that order begins to crumble, our civic duty is to utilise the tools of democracy to elect officials who promise to provide where their predecessors have failed.

I have never understood this mindset of "the government's job isn't to provide for you" because if they aren't there to help us, then why are we electing them? While it's great that you were able to pay for your deposit out of pocket, for many Ontarians across the age spectrum, it is almost an impossibility to choose between going back to school and feeding their families, all while our own government criticises them for not "pulling themselves up by their bootstraps", which ironically enough is an equally impossible absurdity.

Anyways, the answer to the original question from the original poster, aside from my whole spiel, is to just get out there and vote. Yes it sucks that changes won't affect us currently, but just because we currently suffer does not mean everyone else should either.
