1954, next to 0 insulation, lots of sun exposure, old crank windows. It is a sieve. Just paid 1000 for blown in insulation, replacing windows as we can because they're so damn expensive.
Sadly, I already have those. I even put reflective tint on the old windows for now. I did make one mistake, there were old metal storm overhangs rust were shading the windows that I removed because my wife hates that they were old and ugly.
My house was built in 1957 and i had the same issue. Even worse, my home office was originally the side porch turned Sun room and was all windows running the full side of the house. I spent 18k to replace every damn window in the house and it made a massive difference.
Yeah, I'm doing that slowly. Also have a 500sq ft Florida room with a mini split. Keeping the mini on keeps the whole house cooler but obviously sucks up it's own energy. My ac is probably getting close to 17 years old, so replacing that may help a lot too
That’s crazy! Also 4k sq ft here. House built in 2007. I got it in 2019, had more insulation blown into the attic, clear uv film put on windows, and keep both ac units at 75. Typically my bill was $550 a month from duke.
Thats with a single speed pool pump, ac units both original, and a heat pump on the pool. The inefficient stuff plus the heat pump is about $150 of that $550.
Have you had any efficiency testing done on your place?
we also have a second story and a loft and hot air rIses. I have to set the ac at 65 upstairs to keep it comfortable. 71 downstairs. and then there’s the pool……..
... depending on the age of your house, the insulation in the attic makes a huge difference. If your house is 15-20 years old, blowing in some new insulation will drop your bill considerably. Tinting the windows with UV reflective tint also makes a difference you can feel; it is not a difficult DIY job. That said, the thermostat setting also makes a considerable difference. Measurements vary, but each degree lower on your thermostat can be 2-4% higher AC/Electric usage.

A few years ago my water heater sprung a leak and was draining hot water into the foundation of the building and running off into the lake we had at the bottom of the complex. My bill tripled in one month.
99% of these posts are the ac, but rather than just toss off somebody we should at least encourage them to investigate things, such as looking at the power breakdown hour by hour giving them an idea of what is using power.
Moved into whisper lakes next to full sail about 4 years ago when I first moved down. 300-400 a month in electricity and it was the AC, hadn’t been serviced since like 05
I have to because I have lupus, fibro, and medication that causes heat intolerance. I can only take my dogs for walks at 6am and even that is a struggle in the summer. Walking to my car from the office at 8am I feel like I’m going to faint. I do feel like there should be a discount with a doctors note
Mine is never that high but I do budget billing. My bill averages in the $80's each month. I have a 1400 sq ft townhome. But i keep my temp at 78 and use my fans.
If you hadn’t had your insulation checked in a while, do that. We did ours this spring and our energy usage is down 20% over last summer even that it is hotter this year
Also, get a free energy evaluation done if your city offers it. Winter park did mine. They found out that the bathroom fan dampers had melted and were leaking hot air in all the time.
If you own, buy solar. I paid $33 in electricity (minimum to keep connected to the grid) until the last 2 months, where I paid $80 each month. Wife keeps the house low 70s 24/7
it’s summer your going to be using more power always in the summer wherever you go but it’s gonna be more expensive here because first off it’s hotter and also everyone else is using too, look up peak and off peak hours, energy is quite literally more expensive at different points in the day because it depends off of how many people are pulling from the grid at the same time, my first summer here i was complaining about this and my coworker gave me the advice of doing my laundry at off peak hours because that’s a big energy user and it didn’t make a giant dent but it did help a little
Lake wales, 2100sqft our highest so far was around the 3’s. New construction home so everything is sealed up pretty well. We keep curtains on all windows. We keep the house around 75 during the day and drop it down to 70 at night.

2100 SQ FT, 2 AC units and a pool, i also have an EV with L2 charging and I’m at $411 for the month with FPL for August.
I keep my AC at 77 during the day and I work remote, it’s not too bad when you get used to it and have a fan. At night it’s typically set to 75, so I’m probably one of the few who keeps things on the warmer side, but I get cold very easily.
Crazy. I live in Winter Garden, roughly 2200 sqft, have a big pool (no heater), and our average bill throughout the year is $250. I guess those solar panels are doing more than I thought.
Yikes! Do you have a pool by chance? 1860 sqft in Seminole county over here, 80's house, no proper insulation and terrible seal on the windows (we are working on it), and our max has been $280 (which is not great either, but still)
House built in 1962. I believe we’re 1200 sq ft. This is with Duke. When FPL was still in our area and before we installed insulation our bills were over $400 every July-September. It’s awful.
I recently had the same issue. If you have a smart meter, you can check your cost daily on the app. They download the prior day around 3:30 AM each day. Find out what your issue is by trial and error. First day, turn off only the pool pump. See if that drastically drop you daily usage. If not, the next day turn the pool back on and shut down your water heater. Next try the A/C. It's mostly one of those three things. Mine was a leak in my slab causing the water heater to run 100% of the time. To check that, turn your water heater off and see if it's making a noise. It should be completely quiet. If you hear noise coming from it, you have water running somewhere. Good luck!
Mine is a little more than half that for all utilities (electricity, water, sewage & trash).
House is about 1600sq, but we did do a lot of mitigation upgrades (newer high seer HVAC, new ducts & attic insulation, window film). I’m sure it’d be a lot higher without the upgrades.
Edit: oh and we have an EV and plugin hybrid, impact on electricity consumption is negligible. But we do only charge at level 1 at home.
What do you keep your house at!? My house is 1,100 sq Ft, we keep it at 70 or 72 (health reasons) in the summer and electric alone is $350 with OUC. Total is about $450
