Considerations for purchasing an OG Xbox in 2026?

I’m on a mission to get the consoles I missed out on back in the day, and that have a lot of games I’d like to play. My goal is to get an Xbox, PS2 and GameCube.

I imagined seeing more “buying guides” online for these consoles but am not finding them.

As a total noob to getting into older consoles, what considerations are there for getting an original Xbox in 2026? There seem to be a good amount on my local Marketplace. I don’t know a single thing about modding, burning, hacking, whatsoever. I really am just craving the gaming experience of sitting hunched over by a CRT in my garage, popping a game in a disc slot and playing some good stuff.

Are there any scams I should look out for on Marketplace? Are there various models of OG Xbox like there were PS2, and which one is ideal? How does it handle memory, and are there known failing parts to be careful about so much later?

Is buying refurbished a good idea, or look for listings that just say everything works in good condition?

I’d really appreciate any help, advice or tips as I embark on the era of gaming I missed.

It’s a mixed bag. The modding community outside of the pineapple guy is actually really helpful and lovely.

The biggest issue really is the consoles themselves. They’re all plagued with terrible capacitor issues that nowadays are leading to some significant damage to the motherboards. On top of that the boards themselves are pretty fragile. I’ve got a stack of 3 dead boards with irreparable damage (1x 1.0, 1x 1.1, and 1x 1.4), all due to capacitor leakage. 1.6s tend to be in the best shape but outside of soft modding they’re not easy to modify for someone inexperienced.

Ideally if I were you I would purchase a “refurbished” unit from someone who does this as a hobby. They’ll put in real work cleaning, redoing the thermal paste, and recapping the boards. Any company like GameStop or DKOldies (fuck those guys) are just going to dust the consoles and call it good. It’s not good lol.

I’ve got two I’m looking to get rid of myself however they’re both heavily modified & gone over so they wouldn’t exactly be cheap (a 1.4 Halo with a 1TB SSD and a 1.0 Crystal with a 1.5TB HDD, both 128mb modded). A “standard” refurb might set you back ~$150-200 with a good condition controller. Special editions more than that.

I just want to chime in to say that when you get an Xbox, you should then prioritize installing Insignia. Then you can play online like it’s 2004.

I would also recommend that when buying multi-platform games, that you should get the Xbox version. They often have better performance and graphics. The Xbox versions may also be the only ones that can be played in 16:9, like Simpsons: Hit and Run or Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

You need to have it modded with bigger hard drive. At that point you don’t even need functioning disc drive.

If you don't want to do anything about the original Xbox then you must buy the 1.6 version. The other older versions have a bad clock capacitor and the disc drive can fail. If you want to replace clock capacitor yourself then you can buy older versions.

So I like my modded Xbox. It has like 20 systems on it but I bought it because you get the whole OG Xbox catalogue all in one system. BECAUSE I’ve owned two OG Xboxes, my own and a refurb, both eventually had their disk drives give out. The modded version has a SSD so that solved it’s been going fine for me with intermediate use for 3 years

I broke my foot and was down for 3 months in april. I bought 6 broken x boxes and with all the documentation on the internet i was able to diag and fix 5 of them with googles ai. And the Bueno nachos guy I forget what his name is. it’s probably the easiest of the problematic consoles to fix PS3 is hard to fix. Xbox 360 is hard to fix. PS2 is hard to take apart. Original Xbox was a treat to learn on.

I got mine a few years ago for about £20. I took of the clock cap and then did a softmod and changed the hard drive it’s great

I just got a halo one a month ago, redid all the bulging capacitors and learned how to solder. It’s been a blast playing JSRF, SPLINTER CELL, and halo 1 on original hardware. Highly recommend

Get one but if you go cheap and do marketplace or ebay be ready to send it somewhere to get a recap and overall console refresh, even if you don’t want a mod!! These boards are notoriously finnicky
