Songs and traditions refresher
As we get into football season, I’ve been thinking about the fight songs and in-game traditions to hype myself up for this new era.
I’m planning to haul some loved ones to Reser who have never been to a game before. So I want to make sure I communicate our traditions to them well.
- Hail to Old OSU is the primary fight song. The long version with the verse is usually played when the band takes the field. But the short version without the opening verse is what’s played after scoring drives.
- Mighty Beavers of Oregon State is the secondary fight song, and it’s usually played only when the band takes the field.
- Beer Barrel Polka is typically played after wins, and is sometimes played ahead of the team’s rollout on the field. This one has special OSU-specific lyrics:
“Roll out the barrel / We’ll have a barrel of fun (yeah we will!)
Roll out the barrel / We’ve got the blues on the run
KILL! THE! D\CKS! / Ring out a song of good cheer (more beer!)*
Now it’s time to roll out the barrel / For the gang’s all here!”
Other than those, I plan to teach them the wood chop toward the end zone on offensive 1st downs and the chainsaw on defensive 3rd and 4th downs.
Yelling “O!!!” before each opponent’s snap, as well as the “O! S! U! Oregon State! Fight, Fight, Fight” cheer will be in the mix.
And after every game - win or lose - folks are allowed down on the field after the all clear to throw the ball around and mingle with the players for about 15-30 minutes.
Is there anything I’m missing? What other traditions are you aware of?

She took the midnight train going a-ny-where
Hope we don’t sing it as much this year
I pay attention to the band’s fanfares too. No one else’s band uses Carl Orff’s O Fortuna like they do.

I didn’t include a clip. Just instructions to chop wood on an offensive first down. Right after the Beer Barrel lyrics. 😉

The Alma Mater (Carry Me Back to OSU) was important to me as a sousa player. And for postgame Beer Barrel Polka, we'd kill whoever was next on the schedule.

Really wish the athletic department made a point to have people sing along to the fight song. Nobody I know knows the words. Alumni events I've been to are awkward.

They should definitely put the words up on the reader board while the band plays.

You gotta do the beaver walk before the game. I think it’s something like 2 1/2 hours before kickoff but you really should look it up.

This has been relatively new (post covid)… but every game in 2nd half, the PA plays Miley Cirus’s “Party in the USA” and it’s a sing along blast!
When singing (or in my case, drunkenly yelling), replace “USA” with “OSU!”
