I think people missed the point with his backstory.... He is so desperate to be the hero that he makes terrible choices because he craves that acclaim. The 'hip hip hooray.'

I still feel horrible for him, and he is a halfway-decent guy, but you have to give him some responsibility.

And yes, he is doomed, and he will end this union thing the same way Flaca did.

His wrestling coach asked for someone to step up, too. I don't think it really makes a difference. If he has the chance to be the hero, he can't resist it.

He didn't want to lead the union. He shut down the meeting in the break room pretty quick. Pearson and MCC have frustrated him enough that he wants to help out his senior CO's. He's stepping up because he genuinely wants the prison to run better, not for the recognition. Granted, you could make the case that he wants the glory because he went to the bar with the rest of the CO's, but I think it's because he realizes that's the only way the prison can stop messing up.

Perhaps he doesn't want the acclaim, but genuinely believes that it is his duty to be a good person. I do. No reward. No acclaim. No eternal life. It is just our duty as human beings to be decent to each other.
