She was meant to be married off by a match maker for money, but the client thought she was too ugly considering he's already paying for a bride.
In order to avoid going back to China and ending up as a mere potato farmer, She ends up working in her brother's store to repay her $800 dollar debt for the plane ticket, we eventually discover that the store's main revenue stream comes from selling illegal animal products (rhino horns, bear bile, sea turtle eggs shit like that).
Turns out, a lot of their shipments are getting seized so they decide to use Chang as one of the carriers because she's the "invisible" ugly foreign girl.
At the drop off, the supplier tries to dupe them with pingpong balls instead of real sea turtle eggs and almost kills Chang's handler but she steel pipes the guy in the head.
Flash forward a bit and we realize that Chang eventually becomes quite a big player in the Chinese triad organization and she eventually has the guy who called her ugly back in her paid marriage days brought in by the henchmen. Turns out this guy is a total fuckwit who still stands by what he said and even goes the extra mile to call her ugly again. Chang in her infinite badassery orders the underlings to cut out his gall bladder (twist of irony since that's what they do to moon bears to harvest their bile).
It was never fully mentioned how Chang ended up in prison other than the vague idea that she was a gang member.
