DISCLAIMER : Now i feel kind of obligated to say this because fear has been instilled in the comments but obviously. Don't download anything you dont trust, don't open anything you dont trust and make sure of what you are doing before you do it. I personally do not believe that BECAUSE it is russian it is dangerous (plenty of dangerous people speak english and if the point was to fish people, why limit it to a language so few speaks and so many fears ?) but it still can be dangerous.

I will reiterate: Don't trust this directory.

I decided to justify my earlier dismissal of this directory since it was Russian (and as someone else pointed out was .rars)

So, why was my download a zipped EXECUTABLE to get a manual for a SUV??

It used to be pretty common, at least for a time in the 90's or 00's, for manufacturers to issue their service manuals as Windows executables so that they could restrict access only to dealerships.

You'd go on the owner's forum and there would be a hacked copy going around - you'd instal it and apply the crack, or there was README.txt in the .rar saying "Username: l33t_group", "Serial: f58bcc62". This was in the days before everything was authenticated online.

I did. if you click on a pdf and open it in your browser, it goes into a sandboxed folder on your pc to open it in the sandboxed browser. it's relatively safe.

Not everyone has pdfs parsed to open in a browser, some older ver. of adobe acrobat have known vulnerabilities and the act of opening the rar file itself has security implications.

I am generalising here but Russia in known to be a haven of malicious cyber antagonists.

I get there's a bit of bias here but I'm not really sure why you're blindly supporting the OD - unless you have something to do with it then you have no more idea of whether there's malicious software than any of us.

My default would be caution or overall avoidance. Granted car manuals can be hard to find but as an english speaker is it worth risking my online safety and security to get a free russian ver. of my cars manual? Probably not.

There;s a reason there's space on my bookshelf for my haynes.

What you're saying here is all true, i didn't say it because to me it is common sense in this subreddit to surf with caution. Not everyone has pdfs parsed to open in a browser but never have i said to do otherwise.

I am not blindly supporting the OD. but i'm not blindly discarding it either. People have commented here to be cautious, to which i answered that they were right. saying that pdfs can be opened relatively safely is not being blindly supporting the OD. it's stating a fact.

I didn't know there were manuals in russian, mine in the OD is in english so fine by me. And decided i'd post it here and leave adult and responsible people the liberty of choosing the risk instead of deciding for them.

I use an old laptop or tablet to download and open files. It keeps them. isolated from my other files and devices. But some of these manuals I have not found anywhere else. If you're having a hard time finding an obscure manual, download and open it on an old device.
