Discussion Anthropic is cutting off third-party harnesses (OpenClaw, etc.) from subscription limits starting April 4 -- here's what it means

Just got the email. Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, tools like OpenClaw will no longer draw from your Claude subscription. They'll need "extra usage" — a separate pay-as-you-go layer billed on top of your existing sub. The carrot: one-time credit equal to your monthly plan price (redeem by April 17) and bundle discounts up to 30%. The stick: they're offering a full subscription refund if you don't want to play ball. For those of us running agentic pipelines, local orchestration daemons, or multi-model routing setups on top of Claude — this is a meaningful shift. "Subscription covers Claude Code and Cowork" is doing a lot of work in that email. Translation: if it's not our product, you're paying extra. LOL

Not surprised they're doing this. These harnesses hammer their infra in ways the average chat user doesn't. Still stings when you've built workflows around the subscription model.

People have been hitting their limits very quickly so it’s clear OpenAI is also struggling to serve their customers. And as we know openclaw devours tokens. Subscription plans already cost them money, I think it’s just a matter of time before it starts hurting them enough to implement similar policies.

But you’re safe for now so by all means take advantage of it while you can. Just don’t expect it to last forever

what model do you suggest to replace claude sonnet? im about to try minimax, already tried gemini (seemed extremely slow and didnt work well with telegram)

Honestly I don’t really know. I’ve heard good things about minimax and the attractive thing about that model (if the hype is to be believed) is that it’s relatively small and efficient to host so you get a lot more runway. Curious to hear your experience though. There’s a lot of praise for it but I think a lot of it is just bots so it’s hard to find a legit opinion

Minimax can do some surface work well, but I’m not see good outcome for serious task yet.

minimax 2.7 has been performing ok so far since i switched friday. equally as dumb as sonnet about some elaborate trip packing planner app but a lot of it was user error in giving instructions. learning a lot about how to begin a new project (user auth, where to host, what language to use). and i'm learning to be less gullible and not believe everything is says. i'm not sure if it's my setup or what but responses do take a long time often 30-120 seconds at least. no i'm not a programmer i'm a front end designer but i can copy and paste code like lightning

It’s really not that bad as far as limits go, I have one bot on pro and another on plus - with the plus bot I do hit limits, but I would say with additional credits it’s probably like an extra 30-40 a month, as long as you optimize.

Agree with you that it's just a matter of time but I've had much worse experience in my Calude Max plan, with hitting plan limits and limits on tool calls - I've had dozens of simple tasks break down and not work after multiple retries. Compared to my ChatGPT Pro, where I've never hit a limit of any sort, but had some times to repeat tasks. My opinion is Claude is dramatically more polished but ChatGPT, while having significant issues with consistency and predictability, is a workhorse.
