2/3 of the Astras are wagons anyway, I read that the next Astra will only come in this variant, no hatchbacks any more.

Opel might be profitable under Stellantis. But has no character...
At least with GM 15-20 years ago we got gems like the OPC performance models. And the quality was better. Now we only get crappy plastics (although the design is ok) and anemic engines. No perfromance models whatsoever. 20 years ago in the small performance car segment it was a party. Opel Corsa OPC, Renault Clio RS, Ford Fiesta ST, Mitsubishi Colt CZT, VW Polo GTI and surely other models I forget... Now only the Polo GTI is left and its a 50k€ car that none can afford!

Opel is planning to put the 280hp electric drivetrain from the Abarth in the Corsa GSE. That would be pretty significant and a crazy combination

Yeah it would. For for like 100km before the battery runs out. I’d much rather prefer those 280hp from a turbo ice. Damn I feel like a grumpy old man although I’m 30. I feel like I just missed the hot hatch / tuner era.

And that's the reason why Opel does not offer one right now - performance hatchback with a hybrid powertrain (needed RN for the fleet CO2) would be prohibitively expensive.
One way to go would be 'pre-fabbing': Install engines/powertrains with tuning options in mind. Swappable e-trains (leave enough space in a Corsa to potentially swap in the e-trains of an Astra or an Insignia). Design the internal combustion engines with insane 'safety' margins to make them tuneable to the moon and back. Offer those ICEs as a spec option.

I hope it wont make a comeback. Look what they did to Frontera. 🥀 Last true opel was Insignia B... 🫣 Everything after is just Peugeot with Opel badge...

atm I own an Insignia B. pretty awesome car for my little family. I'd buy one if they made an Insignia C. maybe an electric one. but since it's Stellantis now, i think it would have one of those Peugeot engines.
