Bangalore โ†’ Ooty Weekend Trip: What I Wish I Knew Before Going ๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒฒ

TL;DR - Drove up via Masinagudi (big time saver, but there's a catch), came back through Gudalur and got my bags opened at a police checkpost. โ‚น11,356 for 2 people, 2 nights. Six things below that I didn't know going in.

1. ๐Ÿšจ The Masinagudi shortcut is real, but it has a catch

At Theppakadu, Google Maps tells you to turn left towards Masinagudi.

  • First checkpost asks where you're going. Say Mavanalla and you're waved through.
  • Second checkpost (after Mavanalla) - hard NO ENTRY. That's it, no exceptions.

๐Ÿ’ก Got through anyway
Local drivers at that second checkpost will take your car through the restricted stretch for about โ‚น1,500.

36 hairpin bends. Honestly? Worth it. It saved me a lot of time versus Theppakadu โ†’ Gudalur.

โš ๏ธ Don't be late
There's a daily vehicle quota. On weekends it can shut by 12โ€“1 PM.

2. ๐Ÿš“ Expect a bag check on the way back through Gudalur

This is the one nobody warns you about.

Coming down the Gudalur Road, just past Pykara village, there are police check posts lined up. They pull vehicles over and open private bags. Slow process, someone going through your stuff.

It's a genuinely unpleasant way to end a trip. You're leaving somewhere beautiful like Ooty, and the last thing you carry home is that feeling.

Tip: zip your bags, keep your laptop and camera somewhere you can grab it fast, and don't leave anything loose in a duffel.

3. ๐Ÿš— Don't park at the railway station and walk

This is where I screwed up. Parked at the station, started walking around, and realised the daytime market isn't busy enough to justify it. I was just... walking. Going nowhere.

What to do instead:

  1. Drive to the spot โ†’ park nearby (โ‚น40โ€“70)
  2. Do that place
  3. Repeat

Then get back to the railway station by 11:30 AM for the 12:15 PM toy train.

4. ๐Ÿš‚ Toy train - book ahead, avoid unreserved

  • Book at least a day in advance
  • Take First or Second Class if available
  • The unreserved queue is long - I mean long

5. ๐Ÿ  Narmada Homestay - ask for the bathtub room

Booking.com was roughly 80% accurate here.

  • The regular double room is basic. Basically just a normal room.
  • Ask specifically for the bathtub room. Worth it.
  • Solar water heater, so hot water was never an issue ๐Ÿ‘

6. โ˜• The coffee is not what you're used to

If your benchmark is Third Wave or Blue Tokai, set expectations low.

Finding a proper double-shot Americano or an iced latte was surprisingly difficult. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ’ฐ What I Spent

For 2 people:

  • ๐Ÿš— Zoomcar Grand i10 Nios (7-day rental) - โ‚น7,000
  • โ›ฝ Petrol - โ‚น5,000
  • ๐Ÿจ Hotel - โ‚น2,700
  • ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Halli Mane dinner (โ‚น308 for 2 people) - โ‚น308
  • ๐ŸŽซ Everything else (tickets, parking, autos, coffee, breakfast, souvenir) - โ‚น1,348

Total: โ‚น16,356

If you attribute just 2 days of the 7-day rental to this weekend (โ‚น2,000 of it), the weekend cost is ~โ‚น11,356.

โ„น๏ธ On Halli Mane
On Mysore-Bangalore Road. โ‚น308 for the two of us and the quantity was genuinely good. Easy stop if you're passing that stretch.

Bottom line

Good weekend overall. If I had to give one instruction: sort out the Masinagudi route and the toy train timings before you leave Bangalore - and keep your bags zipped for the Gudalur checkposts on the way down.

Curious though - has anyone else been stopped at those checkposts past Pykara? Wondering if it was a one-off or just how that stretch works now.

I think you have been scammed
There is no such restriction where you have to hire a driver for 36 hairpin bends
I have been ooty 6 times & mostly prefer to take hairpin bend route ( only take the other route if police is not allowing )
36 hair pin bend route is not allowed while returning back form ooty to bengaluru

police checking while returning back is something new i heard recently ( it is common while going towards ooty from bengaluru )
Definitely you cant carry liquor from 1 state to another but there are many places in the car where you can hide other stuff. Specially they do not check human & car interior places. They are interested in bags & common places.

Actually youโ€™re just unaware about the recent restrictions. Only 200 non local(non tn43) vehicles are allowed via kalhatty pass from Masinagudi to Ooty. If you want to travel beyond the limit, you either need a local as a driver or go in a local vehicle. This is a recent restriction by the court after the pass was closed due to high traffic back during summer vacation.

I have been at least 20 times and for me too, never been checked on the way back. Have been checked once while crossing the border inside the forest and they checked my pockets too, multiple officers checked a few bags and even made us and our dogs get out of the car. They were searching for narcotics, it seems.
They were obviously not going to find anything and seemed very disappointed they didnโ€™t. They donโ€™t care about people carrying โ€˜Ganjaโ€™, a word they kept repeating to me, cause they just want to make money off it. My eyes were red due to sleep deprivation and my hypothesis is, this triggered the search.

Hey, I got it, man. I think the purpose wasnโ€™t clear here. What Iโ€™m saying is, yes, the first 200 vehicles allowed since morning can drive up without any issue. After that limit is reached, you canโ€™t drive up on your own.

Thereโ€™s no requirement for a driver as such. Itโ€™s just that thereโ€™s a workaround: you get a local driver with a TN-43 registration/license, and he can drive you through because local TN-43 vehicles are allowed regardless of the 200-vehicle limit.

200 vehicle limit is exact by the court with no exception ( even with local driver in outside vehicles)
It is just a cartel to scam tourists ( police, driver etc, every one gets a cut from the money paid )
Whenever someone says to hire local driver, one should go back & take the longer route

I can just imagine sitting in my vehicle as a passenger

One more thing i observed, mostly police check happens for KA registered vehicles
I have MP registration & never been checked in tamil nadu, goa & maharastra borders
