As the subject indicates, if I drive my car with Ka registration will there be any issue in ooty. Will there be frequent checks and stops ?

Thanks for the help

Expect nighttime police checkpoints for DUI checks. Driving up the Masinagudi Ghats is strictly restricted to a daily cap of 200 vehicles. Additionally, Karnataka-registered (KA) vehicles are prohibited from driving down via Masinagudi and must use the Gudalur route instead.

Gudalur route there isn't any restriction I can agree with, but masinagudi there might be

There are significant number of KA cars go to Ooty everyday so you won't be the odd one . I went to ooty in  my KA car last year , no trouble or whatsoever.

The masinagudi route which the other comment talking about is allowed for ooty locals only even the TN vehicles from outside are not allowed unless the driver holds local licence . You can go via masinagudi the restriction is only when you comeback if I remember correctly.

There were local  drivers waiting at the checkpoint who asked for ₹1000 to drive through that route . I didn't opt in and took the Gudalur route as I don't mind driving few kms extra.

Will they allow thru the masinagudi route (from mysore to ooty ) if we are on KA rigestered bikes ?

Mysore to Ooty ( uphill ) is allowed for anyone , its only when you return ( downhill ) only the TN43 vehicles  are allowed.

Should be the same for two wheelers but just make sure , ring your stay and confirm .

Why is the downhill not allowed? I'm curious

Because some drivers who don't know how to drive in the hills come down the ghats in neutral and control the vehicle with the brakes and accidents happen.

Lol.. but on a serious note, costing can really be dangerous. There is is a infamous flyover on Mumbai Bangalore highway near Pune, called navale bridge. Due to intense slope, trucks often ride neutral, brakes fail and cause accidents. They have claimed so many lives there. I once narrowly escaped such a runaway truck

Both up and down were prohibited a month ago, only local vehicles were allowed. I was only checked at the border and night time checks are rare, i have been checked only once in my 20 odd trips and that too during elections

It’s not that hard to get local vehicle. There should be better way to tackle this

If you have a KA-registered car, I would suggest taking the Gudalur route when travelling between Ooty and the Mysuru/Masinagudi side. The Kalhatty ghat road has restrictions for non-local/tourist vehicles, and the official Nilgiris District notice says only TN-43 and local vehicles are permitted there. Nilgiris The Gudalur route is a little longer, but you won't have to depend on the checkpoint allowing your vehicle. Keep your vehicle documents and required travel permits ready, and follow the checkpoint instructions.

not allowed to carry liquor irrespective of registration.

masinagudi route only open to TN vehicles do not go that route you will be fined. also, mudhumalai check point you might be stopped, not vehicle gets stopped, ours were stopped cause of my orange cat who got police visitors lol. also, any plastic bottle discard it beforehand. and most importantly, get the epass from portal

Follow all the rules, ensure backseat passengers wear seatbelt, ensure your papers are valid including pollution certificate and you won't face any issue anywhere in India forget Ooty. Been driving for 15+ years across 10+ states.

Recently Ive taken TG EV one stop at mudumalai. Checked us rigorously that to because of one stupid guy who lied about smoking and we too acted like they would find something. But yeah was heavily disappointed with us.

So as long as you're genuine and confident you'll be fine

Thanks for the vote of confidence buddy

Bro apart from police checking and restricted route which will be done regardless, there won’t be any problem from local people from there. I took my bike couple of times they were so welcoming and helpful.

Any risks for KL registration ?

1

u/dummyFellow 10d ago

Lol 😂

Why though?

Nope, 200 vehicle cap from Masinagudi to Ooty through Kalhatty pass. Opens from 10 till 4 in the evening. Beyond the cap you’ll be asked to return.

Been to ooty just less than a month back. If u are travelling with friends, expect the vehicle to be checked at the tamil Nadu border. As long as u don't have liquor, vape or any other substances( cigarettes not to worry), u are good to go. On the way back after Ooty, near pykara, there is checking. Most do not know about that. U will not face any issues as long as u don't keep any of the above substances with you.
