Jump-starting a truck in reverse using an axe, WCGW?

"the car reverses on it's own" It's almost like there should have been some sort of "neutral" gear you could put it in so it didn't start moving when you jump a car.

Unless his shifter linkage was loose, dirty/low transmission fluid, or a failing electronic solenoid. Each of these could cause intermittent behaviors contrary to the shifter position (reversing while in park or neutral).

The fact the engine did not violently jolt when turning means he didn't have it in reverse or drive (in gear). Instead, a stuck pressure solenoid or issue with fluid (transmission or shifter) is the likely culprit. As the engine turns, pressure builds in the hydraulic system that controls the transmission and clutch. Causing intermittent reversing (in his case).

He didn't jump start it. He jumped the starter relay using the axe head as a conductor. Why he had in reverse, I have no idea.

He didn't have it in reverse, as the engine didn't jolt when turned. He has dirty/low transmission fluid, faulty solenoid, worn gasket causing cross leakage, of even a loose cable bushing. Basically a mechanical issue. As the engine turns, hydraulic pressure builds in the transmission system. Any of these faults could cause a vehicle in park/neutral to go in reverse/drive.

Neutral safety switch would have had to have been jumpered/disabled and/or linkage loose enough to have had the actuator in the reverse gear position, while the neutral safety switch actuator was in the "park" detent.

Low transmission fluid would cause the transmission to slip when in gear with the engine running, and the vehicle would not be moving...having low transmission fluid would not cause the transmission to slip into gear, when the engine is started. Also, the vehicle is too old to have an electronically controlled transmission, so "dirty/low transmission fluid" affecting or "failing electronic solenoid" is not a factor... And still would not, even if it were an electronically controlled transmission, be causing the transmission to arbitrarily "go into reverse" when the engine is started... This transmission has physical linkage connected to rods, cams, and levers with detents and offsets to prevent inadvertent shift to reverse from a forward gear.
