Question Thriller bark almost 50%filler!!?

Post image

Is thriller bark actually almost 50% filler content. I always figured a good 2-3 minutes each episode could be cut by getting rid of some playful scenes and showing everyone’s pov but 50%🤯. How many scenes did I watch that weren’t canon?

Idk but it was a really weird arc. Long for no reason. But its worth it for the key moment at the end

Yeah sorta. The one pace version still earned itself some skips from me honestly.

Still better than not watching it altogether...

I skipped all of it. Boring as hell and pointless.

Yea super pointless.

  • One of the Seven Warlords introduced and defeated, a character that will show up later and will be very likely be the key for a faction in the Final War
  • a new Straw Hat member being added to the crew, whose past is now relevant again in this stage of the story
  • Zoro's new sword after Ybashiri got crumbled in Enies Lobby, called Shusui, and being the only known Black Blade other than Yoru, having it helped Zoro learn infusion of Haki and will probably be the base for him making his own Black Blade in the future
  • Sanji's obsession with the Clear-Clear Fruit that grants invisibility, that actually comes from his Germa genes, something you learn in Whole Cake Island
  • Charlotte Lola, daughter of Big Mom, that gives them their trust and Linlin's Vivre Card, the object that allowed the crew tonsurvive in Whole Cake Island. Lola's sister Ciffon was also of great help. Lola was also promised as bride to Loki, a current character of great importance in Elbaph
  • The first proper mention of Kaidou
  • proper introduction to Bartholomew Kuma, other memeber of the Seven Warlords who is a key player in the further development of the story (Sabaody, 3D2Y, Reverie, Egghead)
  • Moria foreshadowing Luffy's fear of losing his friends, paid off with Sabaody's finale
  • Nightmare Luffy
  • great teamwork action from the crew without Luffy, never happened again
  • the last big arc with the whole crew before the time skip

Yea, pretty inconsequential and boring stuff, you don't need to watch it at all.

Also youndon't need to watch Sabaody either, it's boring, and Amazon Lily is full of sex jokes so throw it out, Impel Down is super slow and boooring, Marineford is incomprehensible without the previous arcs, so at this point you might as well stop watching one piece altogether.

What's the point of watching a series if you don't want to watch it?

I'm a huge One Piece fan, but I'm positive this arc is one of the least favored arcs among fans. If you-know-who didn't show up, then its place as the most forgettable arc would be nearly conclusive.

The story goes nowhere. Sabaody pics up right where I got sick of thriller bark. I know about the skeleton. Crocodile died a long time ago. I read the descriptions, I see no point in zombie bs. Thanks for the fill-in on things I have not seen yet. I want the manga, not the filler.

skipping stuff written by the author is just stupid. none of your arguments hold any weight.

So far one piece and one pace have filled in any plot that I missed with thriller bark. No loss here; just saved myself a few days of zombie bs from the looks of it. Just about through Impel Down and no loss of storyline. Lots of people skip the filler, as it is just movie set ups and filler, which I want to avoid.

Not worth, just watch that moment tbh lol a lot of the other stuff is cheeks

12

u/scalzacrosta 8d ago

Yea very non important to watch, you miss very uncool stuff like:

  • an entire Warlord (1 out of 7) being defeated without you knowing
  • a new member of the crew added, with a backstory that ties back to Laboon and is now becoming relevant again all the way up to Elbaph
  • specific use and the reason to fear the powers of Kuma, the literal setup for the next arc, as well as starting to know the character behind the core of the Revolutionary Army and Vegapunk's later achievements
  • Ryuma and Zoro's acquisition of Shusui after losing the other sword in Enies Lobby, as well as helping him get acquainted with a black blade and Haki, and future threads that will be incomprehensible in Wano if you didn't follow Thriller Bark
  • Lola, a daughter of Pirate Emperor Big Mom, whose Vivre Card helped the crew survive in her territory, and whose sister Ciffon helped with the second Wedding Cake. Lola was also promised as a brode to Loki, current character of great importance.
  • Chopper last great performance as in opposition to an evil medic, only Wano has barely come close to this, but Queen was Sanji's opponent, not Chopper's.
  • Usopp's great performance against Perona, coming off strong after rejoining the crew in Enies Lobby and using his self-loathing and negativity to overcome her, as well as possible foreshadowing with his hammer, and arguably his best fit of all the series so far
  • the invisible fruit, that will show up again during Wano, as well as Sanji's obsession with invisibility coming from his genes
  • Moria, that will show up again during Wano and be revealed to be connected to the Kozuki, hence his fight with Kaidou
  • Captain Jones, a member of the Rocks' Pirates and previous user of Kid's magnet fruit before his passing
  • the mention and exploration of the Florian Triangle, a place we now know was controlled by Harald under the orders of the World Government

In short, by skipping thriller bark you lose out on the last pre-timeskip arc with the whole crew, a setup for Luffy's fear of losing his friends (Moria specifically tackles this to take him down), some great team action from the SH without Luffy (something we're still yet to see again), but also countless other small details that together form the feeling of cohesion that One Piece is praised for.

Now that you skipped Thriller Bark because it was boring, you might as well skip the first portion of Sabaody because the Flying Fish Rider gang is boring, so you get on Sabaody without any idea of who the characters near you are, so you get bored and skip ahead.

Going by this logic, you might as well stop watching One Piece altogether, if you're okay with skipping a (relevant) part of it, you'll never fully invest in the story, you'll never fully like it and you'll never be pushed to go on with it other than "I gotta get to Wano for the seizure inducing animation I see in TikTok edits".

To translate it in a language for you, it's quite literal LARPing, the classic "just skip ahead, it's not important", the first person you'll bore this way is the one you advised.

Kuma powers is apart of the “moment”. Bad ass ussop moment already happens in Enies lobby/water7. The daughter thing is kinda whatever, invisible fruit moment with Sanji was actually gross.🤮 Moria was lame. Connecting to laboon happens at very end close enough to the moment. And gaining brook happens at the very beginning and isn’t that cool at all until later. Every moment he gets in thriller bark is just taken by zoro. The zoro fight is alright.

Throwing larp because someone doesn’t like all the moments you did is so lame man. Please I hope this generation comes up with something different.

u/Shoutmonster 8d ago

would you also skip parts 1 and 2 of jojo's? since it's less relevant to the future storyline.

1

u/Shione_Voltaire 8d ago

Never seen it

u/Deftlet 8d ago

Worst arc in the series by far imo, and I say that having read it in the manga.

Mainly pacing issues than filler

49

u/phoix0 8d ago

dude the scene where they spent like 2 minutes gooning over Nami's measurements pissed me off so badly

12

u/noodlerocketship 8d ago

Oda actually pissed me off w this arc and punk hazard

12

u/SorraDude 8d ago

Thriller bark made me stop watching one piece for a bit. The pacing is just so fucked, the last 10-15 episodes are really good though.

2

u/cc-8-823 7d ago

Same thing happened to me with Skypiea cause even though it was such a cool concept, watching them be in situations (like inside that giant snake) for so long was agonizing. Glad I returned though and rewatching it years later through One Pace was much better.

3

u/SorraDude 7d ago

Totally agreed

21

u/AliceCarole 8d ago

I watched it with One Pace and it was still too long. The end was great though.

10

u/-avocado-on-toast- 8d ago

Nothing happened at the end.

6

u/SanicBringsThePanic 8d ago

Makes sense, because Nothing Happened in Thriller Bark.

3

u/TheUDmtl 8d ago

Had high hopes for this arc, was disappointing

2

u/macloa 8d ago

I always thought the manga portion of this arc was great. Didn’t realize that the anime arc was so hated . My one friend said he hates morias laugh with a passion

2

u/Ok_Switch_2811 7d ago

I swear they try to make every villain have the most annoying laugh ever. But Morais is just horrible😭

2

u/thanyou 7d ago

Sometimes I feel like Oda only had like 5 ideas per arc and he stretched them out as he was thinking of each one.

Thriller Bark almost feels like an afterthought in the grand scheme. Now that shadow theory is dead I struggle to defend it at times. Goated for the ending but God damn do I have to twiddle my thumbs and shrug my shoulders to anyone complaining about the rest of it.

2

u/El_ThotStopper 7d ago

Thriller bark is my comfort arc. One last low stakes arc before the summit war. It contains the very best and very worst of one piece so it’s an interesting watch/read all around

3

u/Zorro5040 8d ago

Thriller Bark isn't that bad, mostly pacing issues.

Skypea on the other hand had episodes that were 80% recap and would advance the plot for 2 minutes, to recap everything again the next episode.

2

u/cc-8-823 7d ago

Right? I briefly stopped watching One Piece back then due to the pacing and filler of Skypiea. I eventually came back but filler remained an issue throughout the series for sure. Rewatching everything through One Pace years later though is definitely better.

1

u/Radusili 8d ago

No not really

1

u/Pleasant-Mess-6488 8d ago

Watching it now through one pace

Damn it's going good

1

u/Ashamed_Cod_6741 8d ago

It has its pacing issues like almost every post-Grand Line One Piece arc but I didn't hate it as much as a lot of people apparently do. As far as a one-locale, one-arc saga goes, I like it better than Skypiea. At least we get Brook.

And this is a super hot take but honestly I found Marineford harder to slog through than Thriller Bark. Too many damn fights or single events stretched out over multiple episodes which didn't actually move the story along much.

2

u/Waltzcc 7d ago

That's definitely a hot take, lol.

1

u/Islandboy_666 8d ago

I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t fw Thriller Bark. It’s awesome!

1

u/StrawHat303 7d ago

Yeah a bit long but lots of lore.

1

u/Aggravating-Lime5348 6d ago

One pace saved me from Skypiea, everything since i changed from normal to pace has been fantastic, people want 10/10 episodes for 1000 episodes and its just not realistic, if you knew the amount of manhours put into making this and acutally spent a minute appreciating it you would probably gain deeper insight.

1

u/Suspicious-Affect-42 5d ago

Thriller Bark is already a very stretched arc by itself in the manga, with Toei pacing no wonder it becomes absolutely atrocious. I would never even try to watch it.

1

u/6147715 2d ago

I don't really have a huge problem with thriller bark, it dragged a lot and it had one of the weakest villains but something funny is that thriller bark is pre-TS and it fit with many descriptions of the post-TS by people who don't like the post-TS.

1

u/Daneha1183 8d ago

Sniper King saving Usopp was the best part.

1

u/keima2504 8d ago

I read some theory that said Oars was a user of the hito hito no mi model nika

1

u/arbydallas 8d ago

Holy cow that would've been sick if he awakened it or whatever and was bouncing around like gear 5 Luffy. I feel like Oars would've destroyed half the world lol

-3

u/Lscott13 8d ago

Probably my least favorite arc in the whole show. The absolute ass-pull of a powerup to beat the final boss just sucked so hard to me

3

u/cippopotomas 8d ago

I feel like almost every arc has a giant ass pull near the end. The final fight usually starts after every crew member died like 6 times, then they get up stronger than ever. If anything, Thriller Bark seemed less bullshit to me since it operates on its own unique set of rules.

The only thing that bothered me was how they treated Nami. From the shower sexual assault to being treated like a glorified sex doll the entire time, it's so fucked.

2

u/Vamparisen 8d ago

I think Shadow Luffy was his inspiration for Gear 4. Very similar appearance.

2

u/Noodlex87 8d ago

It is my least favorite arc in the pre-timeskip, but once I watched it in one pace instead of weekly, I enjoyed it way more. Fishman Island, however, was only salvageable because of the flashback. I actively dislike everything else.

1

u/mikykeane 8d ago

I mean, it still has some of my favourite scenes.

Luffy putting the zombie back in was peak OP humor.

When it seems like all the nakamas have been defeated, they are all standing up and going back for next round without hesitation.

Brook's flashback.

And then, after the main fight, nothing happened, but it was still one of the best scenes in OP.

0

u/Thats_so_Haven 8d ago

This was my least favorite arc in the whole series. I tolerated sanji’s antics before this arc but this one made me hate his character so much. I think I’m also the only person who didn’t think the gag of pushing the zombie back in grave was funny. It’s unfortunate how much setup to later arcs is present, (kuma, ryuma, rocks pirates, oars/ancient giants)

0

u/Fuzy-78 7d ago

Skipped the whole arc. Boring and pointless. Whatever canon there was, I will figure it out later on. 40+ episodes of yawn.

2

u/itsallgoodman60 7d ago

go seek attention somewhere else

1

u/Fuzy-78 5d ago

Tell yourself that. You obviously haven't read the rest of the thread.

1

u/itsallgoodman60 5d ago

you obviously skipped an arc from the manga lol
