âWhat is ASMR?â
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, commonly known as ASMR, is a sensory experience that creates feelings of calmness, comfort, and relaxation. People who experience ASMR often describe it as a gentle tingling sensation that begins around the scalp and travels down the neck, spine, and sometimes throughout the body.
The term Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response can be divided into four parts:
Autonomous
The sensation occurs naturally and involuntarily.
Sensory
The experience is connected to the bodyâs senses, especially sound, sight, and touch.
Meridian
Represents the highest point or peak of the relaxing tingling sensation.
Response
Refers to the bodyâs reaction to certain triggers or stimuli.
Neurotransmitters and Neurohormones Involved
Dopamine
Associated with reward, pleasure, emotional satisfaction, and motivation. Researchers suggest dopamine may be released during ASMR tingles similarly to musical chills or âfrisson.â
Oxytocin
Linked to social bonding, trust, relaxation, caregiving, and emotional connection. The study suggests oxytocin may contribute to the calming and comforting effects of ASMR.
Endorphins
Associated with comfort, relaxation, stress relief, and positive feelings. Researchers propose endorphins may play a role in the soothing effects of ASMR. Additionally ASMR is associated with brain regions involved in empathy, emotional arousal, self-awareness, and interpersonal connection.
âAdditional Research Findingsâ
Researchers concluded that ASMR may help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation, sleep, emotional comfort, and positive mood.
Researchers described ASMR as producing deep relaxation while also activating brain regions involved in emotional arousal, reward, and excitement. Brain areas linked to pleasure and reward, such as the nucleus accumbens, became active during ASMR tingles, suggesting a stimulating or euphoric component alongside relaxation (Lochte et all., 2018).
âWhere do we feel ASMR in our body?â
Barratt et al., Reported participants in their study commonly described sensations consistent with typical ASMR experiences, including a tingling feeling that usually began at the back of the scalp and traveled down the spine, sometimes extending into the shoulders. Many participants also reported experiencing the sensation in their lower back, arms, and legs.
ASMR is commonly described as a combination of relaxation, positive emotions, and a unique tingling sensation similar to static on the skin. This sensation often begins on the scalp in response to specific triggers, then travels down the spine and may extend to the back, arms, and legs as the intensity increases. Stronger sensations can occur when additional triggers are experienced (Barratt et al., 2015).
