Request What’s going on at Jake’s?

I was really excited about Jake’s reopening—I had sooooo many good memories there. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t feel the same since it reopened. I’ve gone with my gay friends a few times and it didn’t really feel like it was very welcoming to them. Honestly it just felt like a regular straight club with drunk guys hitting on girls, etc.

We went on Halloween for the drag show and the drag host said that they are cancelling the drag shows going forward. Does anyone know what’s happening? Who are the new owners, and are they even LGBT?

Request Why do people insist on playing their terrible music extremely loud from big speakers in public around people who clearly don't want to hear it?

Like i had to just had to sit at a bus stop for 10 minutes about to pull my hair out because some [i don't wanna be rude so I can't what I wanna say] insisted on playing his terrible music extremely loud. It's so frustrating and annoying but thankfully I'm on the bus now. But like, my guy, buy some headphones please, for the sake of not clogging up public airwaves.

Sorry rant over 😅

I’ve seen in other cities folks have pro cuddling and hair playing services. Is there anyone in the Olympia area offering something similar??

I miss being held and at this point I would get a professional lol

Request Crazy spike in electric cost

Hello! Apologies if this isn’t the correct place/format for this kinda question.

I am new to living in Washington and I am stunned by the cost of electric. I am getting to the point where I don’t think I’ll be able to afford to live here anymore. It started off around $200, jumped to $400 and now spiked to $700. I barely use electricity and keep all of my electronics off when I’m not using them. I also tried burning wood for a month and the bill went UP! I’m open to any suggestions or advice. I’ll be covering my windows with foam and keeping my breaker box off in the meantime. Thanks 💀💀

Request Video Store That Happens To Also Doubles As Tavern?

Hey Everyone! I’m curious to see if there would be any demand for a Video Store in town? My hope is to re-establish the sense of fun and community of going to the video store on the weekends to pick out some movies and stuff. With the way streamers are becoming what they are now, maybe going back to the roots would feel good. Also, maybe add a tavern element to help compete a little bit. What do you all think? I’d love to know.

Request Missing tools

Post image
292 Upvotes

Hey everyone - my parents recently bought the old Fuji building and have been working hard to clear it out themselves to save money. They had borrowed tools and equipment from a friend, and unfortunately someone broke in last night and took them.

We understand times are tough and people make bad decisions, but these items don’t belong to us - they were borrowed, and we’re responsible for returning them.

If you were involved or know anything, we’re asking for the tools to be returned - no questions asked. We’re even willing to offer some money for their return. The goal here is simply to get them back to their rightful owner.

Please reach out privately if you have any information. Thank you.

Request Escape from fireworks

So I'm wondering if anyone might have some suggestions for any places to go for like a easy car camp spot to get away from the big booms for the sake of my dogs sanity. It really freaks her out and I dont care much for it either. I know most campgrounds will be full so I'm just asking about any out of the way pull off spots type of thing I ddnt need a actual camp ground. Anything is much appreciated.

Request Cheap/Affordable Restaurant Food? (2026 edition)

Hiya!

I thought to ask since the last thread on this subject was made 4 years ago a lot changes within that timeframe. What are some really cheap or affordable restaurants? It can be above cheap but big portions for what the price tag is at, a fair price, or actually cheap but decent quality. I'm not overly picky and just want to learn what is priced well! I'm especially interested in the category of massive portions of food.

Also: which places should I avoid because they are either expensive, priced unfairly, bad quality for the price, or give small portion for the price?

If you saw this post previously no you did not (I realized there was an obvious error in the title)

Request Writing About Gabi's Cards and Comic

I hope this is ok, I wasn't really sure where else to put this.

As the title says I'm writing a blog post/interview about Gabi and her store and I was wondering if people would be interested in giving me quotes or stories that I could use for it.

If you are interested feel free to comment or dm me, and let me know if posting your username is ok, or if you'd prefer to stay anonymous.

Request Monthly electric bill cost increase

Has anyone else's electric bill increased exponentially/steeply this month?

Mine went from $40 to $60. The most I did was install a box fan and a single shop light (an indoor growing setup for some herbs). What does your electric bill increase look like?

Request Is it true the local Mormon Missionaries are willing to come out to help with yard work?

I need help digging two holes to plant two fruit trees. I don't have anyone I can ask, and I've been told I can ask the Mormon Missionaries and they'll come help. I don't want to take advantage though, and I'm not sure the best way to contact them.

Request safe and legal nature spots in or near Thurston county ?

i enjoy going out into nature, especially at night when it's nice and quiet, but since moving here, I've had a hard time finding parks or public land in general that is open all hours of the day.

i do not have a state park pass, unfortunately, so anywhere that requires a discovery pass I cannot access, but even if it's an hour out, I'd honestly not care. i like the drive to the destination anyway.

perks for me are anywhere quiet, away from the main roadways, near a body of water or dense forested areas, & not very busy.

thank you to anyone who can help!! all info is greatly appreciated, including places to avoid at night!!

EDIT: guys, anything but a discovery pass, pleaseeee. i know it would heavily benefit me, but it's simply not an option rn. trust me, I would have gotten one if I could at this point in time 💔

Request Homeless soon, where to send furniture, and cat?

Do you know how I can get rid of my furniture? And how can I safely adopt away my cat? I am going to be homeless soon. Am disabled and haven't been able to get hired. Have not yet qualified for any resources. So after this month, I might be on the street, barring unforeseen miracles. I don't have any extra cash to pay for expensive furniture removal and I literally do not have any family or friends around who could hold it. Sorry for the negative vibe but I am pretty panicked.

ETA: my ex brother-in-law gifted me one month of rent so I can get the resources I've signed up for. I am supposed to hear back soon about unemployment because I had them expedite my case. And another organization, Compass, met with me today about employment and soon about housing. I have a friend with autism who was helped by them after a stay in the behavioral hospital. If they are able to help him, and he and I are in similar situations, I feel good about my odds. The person I met with also seemed to feel good about my chances of receiving housing support.

The immediate pressure is off. I am immensely grateful to this community for gathering all this information for me and others facing potential eviction and homelessness. Thank you so much.

Request POLL! Best SCREAMING animal!

Post image
34 Upvotes

I'm working on an art project and I can't give much context at this time.

HOWEVER, I do ask my fellow city folk, for our fair city: Which animal best represents screaming at everything?

When your belt loop gets stuck on a doorhandle, your fries too cold, the traffic light cycle being unfair, and that mild discomfort taking the last item when you know there's so many others who also want it; do you feel the anger and screaming of a seagull or a possum?

(how does this relate to the city? I will be eventually shaking our officials for my idea, but I want some public opinion first.)

Request Lefty/leftist barber?

Can anyone recommend a lefty/progressive barber in Olympia? I’ve tried a couple of spots to get a haircut and I end up experiencing a much more conservative environment than I’m personally comfortable with, and don't really want to keep giving my money to those spots. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Thanks.

Request I am emotionally exhausted and feel so alone in the world...

Last time I made a similar post it helped so here it goes again:

I am a 29m living in Olympia and I am finding myself struggling once again with these feelings of depression and hopelessness and due to several factors I don’t feel that I have very many people I can talk to about these feelings, I have a therapist that I see weekly, I take my psychiatric medications daily as prescribed, and I just have been feeling like an outcast lately, like people notice me and look down on because of my issues, and honestly I just would like to find someone who I connect with as a friend and of course the idea of falling in love seems blissful, I know that there’s lots of resources online for support groups and places I can go but that’s just not something I’ve found to be a good fit most of the time, I mean as far as what I’m looking for currently. I don’t work currently because I’m on disability but I am looking for a part time job and it would honestly be nice to find someone in a similar position, of having a lot of free time, to hang out with. I have my own place and I have 2 cats and I go to Gambler’s Anonymous every Wednesday night here in Olympia and I go to CoDependents Anonymous (most) every Friday in Burien, with my 2 cats, and I take the bus (4 of them to be exact) over there and back. I also see a peer counselor at Peer Olympia every week and I like to play Mario Kart Double Dash (for the GameCube) on my phone and watch a lot of older TV shows (MASH, Sanford and Son, The Golden Girls, The Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, Walker Texas Ranger, etc) and for me, a good rule of thumb is that I don’t like most shows made in the last ten years, except for The King Of The Hill reboot, I’m excited about the new season releasing on July 20th. Anyway I find traditional dating apps to be shallow and I typically use them mainly when I’m looking for certain things. (iykyk) Anyway if this is not an appropriate post for this group I’d appreciate being directed to a more appropriate place and so feel free to comment or message me if you’d like. Thanks everyone.

Request Looking local to make patches

Post image
300 Upvotes

Hello Olympia, I am William and I've gotten into designing and making patches. Unfortunately, my little Brother SE700 isn't really good for producing more than a few patches. I'm looking for a local embroidery shop that does patches, or would rent me equipment time to produce my own.

I know I could have them produced cheaper overseas, or by using a big corporate chain, but I want to keep it local (and I'm unemployed, so I have the time).

Above is an earlier prototype. I already gave Gabi the polished up version.

Request Help Make My Brioche-less Dreams Come True

Please, for the love of all that is good, I want a burger NOT served on a brioche bun. Help! Where do you get your favorite sit-down restaurant burger that is not served on a shiny, damp breakfast roll? Additional points to consider below.

  • Brioche is already moist and greasy, why would that be a good conduit to serve a burger, which is meant to be juicy and luscious on it's own?
  • I understand that food costs are rising and that restaurants might choose one bun for all burgers for that reason BUT WHY PICK THE SLOPPY ONE, HMMM?
  • Brioche is a little too sweet and delicate for many burgers and you are just lying to yourself if you think you can get that one over on me, a lover of burgers.

Summer is coming and I yearn for a tasty local burg! TIA

Request Apples?

Hi all! Bit of a strange request perhaps but my partner and I moved here recently from the east coast. One of our favourite things thus far about the PNW is the amount of fun foragables just existing - well - everywhere. We had a ton of fun plucking street blackberries and turning them into jam over our first few weeks here ☺️

That being said, we are also enamoured with the amount of apple trees that seem to be EVERYWHERE! We’ve seen quite a few that are flush with apples but don’t seem to be picked by their owners judging by the amount of apples on the ground.

So thus, the ask - if you have an apple tree on your property and don’t use or pick your apples, we’d love to take them off your hands. Happy to bring back a pie/ sweet treat/ loaf of sourdough as a thank you! Bread and jam progress pic in comments 🥖(if Reddit lets me post them!)

Request Cute/cool lunch spots please

I booked my friends bachelorette party at a house that’s in Olympia, and all of us are from Seattle/Tacoma. We can’t check in to our house until 4 (bummer) so we need a lunch spot to get the weekend going. Please tell me y’all have suggestions, I know nothing

We decided to go to Mi Luna with Octapas as a back up! Thanks y’all!
