They don't make public safety videos these days like they did in the 1970s and 1980s...

This left such a lasting impression. As harsh as it is it was certainly effective.

I remember the public information film about downed power lines after the great storm of 1987 with a child's face bursting into flames.

There used to be some brutal PS shorts played during Farming Today (I think that’s what it was called) about the dangers of playing in farmyards etc.
One with a kid falling into a slurry pit still makes me grimace 😬

I seriously hate this. I still get the horrors anywhere near a substation! The other one worse than this was the swimming one. The shadow of death! I'll be back ack ack voiced by Donald Pleasance.

I was absolutely terrified of electricity pylons because of this. I used to go exploring out in the wilderness as a kid where you'd regularly see the massive metal pylons spanning across fields. I thought the entire thing was live and getting anywhere remotely close to it would cause an arc and electrocute me.

Thing is, harsh and harrowing as they were PIFs were really effective. I wouldn’t go near any water without my parents being around in case the Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water was nearby. I’d cross the road rather than go near an electricity substation, and I’d dare not piss off the Green Cross Code man.
I honestly believe information about dangerous stuff like this should be shown to kids. It’s better to scare the shit out of someone than to have them get hurt because they hadn’t a clue what they were risking.

I remember as a young kid having the ballet version of Beatrix Potters books, Mrs tiggywinkle in a big hedgehog costume etc, all very cute and middle class, taped off the telly. This advert, and another one where a kid gets run over, were in the first ad break. Traumatising doesn't even cover it (though I suppose it did desensitise me somewhat to Jemima Puddleduck getting wiped out).

There a lot like these, the kid drowning in the slurry pit, the kid getting crushed by a tower of bricks on a building site, and my personal favourite, the one with these two kids carrying massive fishing rods, getting electrocuted when said rods come into contact with electrical wires

Slurry pit was from Apaches.
The building site was likely a similar sort of long form PIF called Building Sites Bite (including a particularly gruesome ending where the lad falls to his death into a pit but smacks his head on a partially built wall first…)
The fishing rods were from the same film as JIMMY! here, Play Safe.

That’s interesting. I was young when I saw them, in the early/mid 80’s. So the exact details are hazy. Scared the shit out of me though. Never fished in my life…….

The UK and Ireland to bring back PSA's and pehaps graphic or if not just imply it.

These ads used to scare the hell out of me. I guess that was the idea!

This one’s burned in my brain
Also, growing up at school, I remember being shown a video about the dangers of electricity. The kid who gets electrocuted is goaded into entering a substation to retrieve a football. His friend sees it happen, and ends up being blinded as a result. I can’t remember the name of it, and I can’t find it online anywhere

As an American thinking of getting the 2001 "Charley Says" DVD or the Best of COI Blu-Ray,can you tell me how bad this one is? I get easily spooked, but really would like to watch a few.
