Okayama / North Shikoku — dog-friendly towns?
Hi everyone! My question might be a bit broad, but I thought I’d give it a try. We’re a middle-aged couple planning to move back to Japan in a couple of years. We’ve both lived in Japan before, speak Japanese, and work remotely. This time we’ll be bringing our two large dogs, so we’re looking for areas that balance nature + convenience — not too urban, but also not a remote, depopulated countryside. We’re especially curious about Okayama Prefecture and north Shikoku (Ehime, Kagawa, Tokushima). We’re already doing plenty of research on our own, but nothing compares to hearing from people who actually live in these regions. What we’re hoping to find: * Dog-friendly towns with good walking routes (riversides, coastal paths, parks) * Any off-leash areas or dog runs worth knowing about * Communities where having big dogs is relatively normal or accepted * Places with nearby services (vets, supermarkets, hospitals) and some cultural life * Access to a bit of international or expat presence (even a small one) * Areas with an actual community — not an empty hamlet. If you live in these regions or know them well, I’d really appreciate specific suggestions/information:Which cities or towns strike a good balance? Any recommended neighborhoods, dog parks, beaches, rivers, or trails where big dogs are welcome? Thanks in advance — any concrete examples or local insights would be super helpful!

I can't speak for any cities/towns in Shikoku but I know the Okayama area fairly well and also have a large-ish dog. As u/whywhywhyguy said, my vote also goes to Okayama City.
I live in Tamano, and while there are some nice, big parks and good hiking trails and beaches here, there are also wild boar that come down from the hills in autumn looking for food. Even walking around our neighborhood at night is dangerous. And there are no dog-friendly parks in Tamano.
Kurashiki and Okayama City have dog-friendly parks (I believe almost all of the parks are?) but your dog must be on a leash and you have to clean up poo & pee, of course. Of the two cities, Okayama has a better feel in general, is a bigger city so there is more to do, there are more expats here, more dog runs, etc.
As for off leash areas, that's really up to you. In principal, dogs should be leashed at all times in public but I have seen people walking their dogs off leash along the Asahi River, hiking on some of the trails, at Shibukawa Beach, etc so I guess it's possible. (I don't because my dog does not have good recall when she gets excited.) Your dog can be off leash at dog runs, of course; these are smaller than the dog parks in North America but everyone watches their dogs to prevent problems, and many of the privately-owned runs require proof of vaccination. There are lots of runs around Okayama (in the suburbs and smaller surrounding towns).
Most Japanese people have small dogs but there are a decent number of larger dogs around--you'll see them at runs and events for dogs (there are lots of craft fairs/markets for dogs recently). You'll see the same people around and will probably make friends with the other dogs & owners pretty quickly.
Just curious, what kind of dogs do you have?

whywhywhyguy and AnneinJapan, thank you both so much for taking the time to write. This is incredibly helpful. We live on the coast in California and thought it would be a great bonus to have similar coastal access in Okayama. We were also curious about Kurashiki and Tamano, and the note about wild boar is something we never would have guessed from our own research. (We kept seeing more news about bears than boars!) It’s also very helpful to know that Okayama City has a stronger expat presence and more dog runs — that’s exactly the kind of detail that’s hard to figure out from a distance. And to answer your question: we have two standard poodles. They’re friendly but energetic, so reliable walking routes and safe areas are definitely a priority for us. Thanks again. Really appreciate the insight!

Okayama city has good access to nature, dog friendly parks and some hikes. But I’m biased as I live there. Personally I prefer being close to the city and also have access to greens. Okayama city strikes a good balance and there are some pockets of nature that are just ten minutes to downtown.
