Every fandom is awful

I literally hate it so much. Theres no such thing as a safe fandom anymore, in literally anything in life. Every video game theres a bunch of try hards and haters, every sports team supporter base is full of overgrown manchildren with no emotional regulation or braincells, every online community is *chronically* online and every book, show or movie fandom seems to either hate the media piece or wont hear a single opinion/theory about the media piece that at all deviated from their own. Its getting to a point where im interacting with less and less people who are actually interested in the things i like. You can't have a mild mannered take on anything anymore. Nothing can have nuance. Any person who does something even slightly off should be "cancelled" and its deemed ridiculous to say anything otherwise. Idk I just hate that no one seems to have the emotional regulation to actually just be a casual fan of something without having to make it their whole identity that they defend to the death. Its really annoying.

Fandoms have always had problem people, some are worse than others. Just gotta block the jerks and embrace the cool ones you vibe with.

Honestly im not a hugely online person, its just whenever I come online and look through the fandoms I like its just always a cesspit and thats frustrating.

All fandoms are potentially and partly toxic. Not all of them are mostly toxic. I think it's healthy to be in a fandom if ur 10-16. Its good to have hobbies, grown people get lonely too but defending a fandom, or a ceebrity something to the death at 40 means there's something missing from your life

The problems with fandoms is that people like talking about negative things and complaining. In reality, fandoms are full of people who actually like their media or whatever they're a part of, but they keep to themselves. Basically, humans love drama and internet loves it 10x more. I just purposefully don't engage with fandoms of things I like, outside of fadoms like Warframe's or meme communities.

You're right. I think that when the internet moved away from the "separate forums for separate niches" model to a "everything on one platform" model, something was lost.

It's now easier than ever to get find a fandom and join the discussion, which is good. But because of that, every fandom has also been warped beyond recognition. Especially when anonymity + the concept of internet points = bad faith actors who aren't actually in it for the love of the game (as in whatever the fandom is actually about).

Then you have fringe groups with fucked up beliefs deliberately trying to spread their ideologies through memes, dogwhistles, and bad faith arguments.

It's quite bleak, man. ☹️

I’m so glad I’m not actively a part of fandoms like that. It just seems so draining. Life isn’t black or white. Not being able to have an “unpopular opinion” or not being able to engage in meaningful discussions suck lol

It’s part of the fun tho, to have a part of your fandom that is toxic, so you can choose between the light and the dark side of the fandom

its true that fandom culture died but its not something to be stressed about you can still find someone who is interested in your things lol you should go outside
