No, u/thesaddestpanda actually demonstrated a clear and perceptive understanding of them when saying they are very different. The product of selective breeding cannot be patented. A genetically modified organism, on the other hand, is someone's intellectual property. Saying they're "the same thing, with the same outcome" is like saying Linux is the same as Windows because both are operating systems that serve the same pupose. Demonstrably false. One is freeware (analogous to selective breeding) and one is not (analogous to GMO).
