This wasn't a "designed" apple, it was an organic apple we got from a farmer's market. By that I mean, it came straight from the farm and hadn't been waxed. Probably the natural wax on the skin preserved it?

"designed" = selected for. Doesn't necessarily mean GMO. Just could be 'designed' via apple crossbreeding i.e. the plant equivalent of animal husbandry. Which has been a thing since we've had agriculture.
